  • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • On Stage (Extra): a 'Curious' Case of Broadway-Style Entertainment
On Stage (Extra): A ‘Curious’ case of Broadway-style entertainment Feb 25th, 2017 · 0 Comment By Denny Dyroff, Staff Writer, The Times The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Theater fans from this area have been very fortunate this month – mainly because of the offerings from the Kimmel Center’s “Broadway Philadelphia” series at the Academy of Music (Broad and Locust streets, Philadelphia, 215-731-3333, www.kimmelcenter.org). Instead of being presented for the umpteenth time with tried-and-true musicals such as “Annie,” “Sound of Music” or “Rent,” fans are being treated to two hit shows that are fresh off Broadway and making their Philadelphia debuts. “The Bodyguard” is running through February 26. Then, from February 28-March 5, the Academy of Music is hosting “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Hailed as “One of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway” by The New York Times, this adaptation is the Tony Award®-winning new play by Simon Stephens, adapted from Mark Haddon’s best- selling novel and directed by Tony winner Marianne Elliott. Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best New Play, the acclaimed National Theatre production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is now on its first North American tour. Two-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott (“War Horse”) directs this adaptation by Tony and Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens – an adaptation that brings Mark Haddon’s internationally best-selling novel to thrilling life. Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy with an extraordinary brain, is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life.

Jones: Goodnight Saigon GOODNIGHT SAIGON: BILLY JOEL’S MUSICAL EPITAPH TO THE VIETNAM WAR Morgan Jones* Billy Joel adopted new personae and took on new roles in several songs on both 1982’s The Nylon Curtain1 and his penultimate studio album to date, 1989’s Storm Front.2 In what some have seen as an attempt to reach a more adult audience, to “move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect,”3 Joel put on new hats (literally, at times: his fedora-wearing balladeer appears prominently in the video for “Allentown”) for “Allentown” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’,” “Pressure” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Goodnight Saigon” and “Leningrad.”4 Each of these pairs of songs saw Joel endeavoring to make statements about issues that were bigger than he and his own life, which was in stark contrast to his sources of inspiration for his earlier, more self-centered albums.

Guidance from my committee helped me as I shifted through an array of ideas and resources. My mentor, Christopher Morris, provided essential assistance as I wrangled what was once a bewildered narrative. Elisabeth Cawthon, John Garrigus, and Sarah F. Rose also helped me pull together, first, cohesive chapters, then an organized manuscript. Insightful conversations with Frederick H. Smith were remarkably helpful. I also owe him my thanks for offering his time as an outside reader. Fellowships from the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington supported a large portion of my research. My deepest thanks to Conrad E. Wright, Daniel Hinchen, Sarah Georgini, Sarah K. Myers, Mark Santangelo, Neal Millikan, Michele Lee, and Mary V. Thompson for all your help in guiding my research. I owe thanks also to Douglas Bradburn for his mentorship during my stay at Mount Vernon. Finally, to my colleagues, family, and friends, your enduring support helped me to see this to the end. My parents, and my dear husband, Daniel, never wavered in their support.

  • Asylum in American Narratives of Natural Disaster
Shelter from the Storm: Asylum in American Narratives of Natural Disaster by Alexandra K. Rahr A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Alexandra K. Rahr 2014 Shelter from the Storm: Asylum in American Narratives of Natural Disaster Alexandra K. Rahr Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto 2014 Abstract America's origin story depicts the nation as sanctuary incarnate. From the Puritans seeking religious refuge to generations of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, to slaves fleeing north across the Ohio River, in the national imaginary America functions as asylum extant -- as the end of the story. This dissertation interrogates this iconic narrative at a critical historical moment. Reading narratives of natural disaster -- accounts of historical drought, flood, and hurricane -- it produces a nuanced theory of refuge which counters the myth of nationalized sanctuary. In an era of normative catastrophe, narratives of 'natural' disaster problematize the discourse of the nation-state as the exemplary guarantor of refuge. This theory of asylum constitutes a vital prehistory for increasingly urgent critical engagement with vulnerable citizenship and the emerging canon of eco-catastrophe narratives. Chapter One examines the Dust Bowl as represented in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939), Woody Guthrie's folk song 'This Land is Your Land' (1940) and documents of the National Park Service (1936). These disaster narratives demonstrate ii that asylum is defined both by an inviolable border, and by imaginative expansion beyond that defensible perimeter to borderless, abstracted, and infinite refuge.
