For the last three months, I’ve been able to read and research, write and reflect, and meet a variety of scholars, staff and friends, with the feeling that how one’s life intersects with so many other lives: that, I think, is one’s real autobiography . Happy Valley , Patrick White’s first published novel in 1939, has that as a theme and its epigraph is from Mahatma Gandhi. But more on these men later. In March this year Jyoti and I returned from Fiji after six eventful years. We’d gone there in February 2006, from the ANU and the University of Canberra, to help establish the first University of Fiji. Of course, there was USP, established in 1968, which I joined as one of the first local lecturers in 1969 and resigned to take up a ministry in the Bavadra cabinet in 1987: I resigned on Monday; the Colonel staged his coup on Thursday. -

Picasso in Istanbul has been selected by the artist‟s grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and Marta-Volga Guezala. Picasso expert Marilyn McCully and author Michael Raeburn are joint curators of the exhibition and the catalogue, working together with Nazan Olçer, Director of the Sakip Sabanci Museum, and Selmin Kangal, the museum‟s Exhibitions Manager. The exhibition will include 135 works spanning the whole of the artist‟s career, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles and photographs. The works have been loaned from private collections and major museums, including the Picasso museums in Barcelona and Paris. The exhibition also includes significant loans from the Fundaciñn Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte. A number of rarely seen works from private collections will be a special highlight of the exhibition, including tapestries of “Les Demoiselles d‟Avignon” and “Les femmes à leur toilette” and the unique bronze cast, “Head of a Warrior, 1933”. -

PRESS KIT PICASSO 1932 Exhibition 10 October 2017 to 11 February 2018 ANNÉE ÉROTIQUE En partenariat avec Exposition réalisée grâce au soutien de 2 PICASSO 1932 ANNÉE ÉROTIQUE From 10 October to the 11 February 2018 at Musée national Picasso-Paris The first exhibition dedicated to the work of an artist from January 1 to December 31, the exhibition Picasso 1932 will present essential masterpieces in Picassos career as Le Rêve (oil on canvas, private collection) and numerous archival documents that place the creations of this year in their context. This event, organized in partnership with the Tate Modern in London, invites the visitor to follow the production of a particularly rich year in a rigorously chronological journey. It will question the famous formula of the artist, according to which the work that is done is a way of keeping his journal? which implies the idea of a coincidence between life and creation. Among the milestones of this exceptional year are the series of bathers and the colorful portraits and compositions around the figure of Marie-Thérèse Walter, posing the question of his works relationship to surrealism. In parallel with these sensual and erotic works, the artist returns to the theme of the Crucifixion while Brassaï realizes in December a photographic reportage in his workshop of Boisgeloup. 1932 also saw the museification of Picassos work through the organization of retrospectives at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris and at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, which exhibited the Spanish painter to the public and critics for the first time since 1911. The year also marked the publication of the first volume of the Catalog raisonné of the work of Pablo Picasso, published by Christian Zervos, which places the painter of the Demoiselles dAvignon in the context of his own work. -

This thesis investigates the significance of Pablo Picasso's lifelong appropriation of formal elements from paintings by Diego Velazquez. Selected paintings and drawings by Picasso are examined and shown to refer to works by the seventeenth-century Spanish master. Throughout his career Picasso was influenced by Velazquez, as is demonstrated by analysis of works from the Blue and Rose periods, portraits of his children, wives and mistresses, and the musketeers of his last years. Literature and Freedom Mario Vargas Liosa In this CIS Occasional Paper, Mario Vargas Liosa highlights the mutually beneficial relationship between literature and freedom. Where freedom does not exist, censorship and self-censorship stifle creativity - literature tends to become conformist and Literature and Freedom predictable. Colonial Latin America produced scarcely a writer still worth reading in three hundred years, while in Elizabethan England disdain for dramatists saw them left in peace, allowing Shakespeare's genius to flourish. In repressive societies, though, the book is the medium best suitedto keeping freedom alive. Audio visual technology is expensive and easily controlled by those in power. Books, by contrast, can be written, reproduced and circulated by underground cultures. While praising good cinema and television, Vargas Llosa emphasises the book's unique contribution to culture and freedom. Mario Vargas Liosa Mario Vargas Liosa, born in 1936, is one of the most acclaimed Latin American writers. His books include Conversation in the Cathedral(1 969), AuntJulia and the Scrzptwriter (1977), and In Praise of the Stepmother (1988). His autobiography will be published in English translation in 1994 under the title Like a Fish in Water. In 1993 he gave the CIS's tenthJohn Bonython Lecture, entitled Questions of Conquest and Culture (0P47). In 1990 he ran unsuccessfully for the Presidency of Peru. Date ii ABSTRACT This study of Patrick White's work is chiefly concerned with the first four novels, but refers also to some poetry, the short stories, the plays and the three later novels. It traces the development of themes and techniques in these four novels in terms of artistic vision and the rendering of that vision. The early, experimental works, up to The Living and the Dead are treated at considerable length, chiefly to show how the later developments are basically improve• ments and variations on the themes and techniques which have already been used. A second reason for the length of this part of the treatment is that, in the existing criticism of White, these early works are almost entirely ignored. -

Quite a few winners have come from the English-speaking world that at one time was considered to be part of the British Commonwealth. The survey of these writers and their concerns will bring us to five continents and into various historical and social terrains. Reading will consist of poetry, drama, novels and short stories, as well as non-fiction (notably the acceptance speeches of the authors covered.) Introduction
Introduction For more than 60 years I have worked in short bursts on my magnum opus, the Dictionary of World Biography (DWB). It demonstrates my preoccupation, even obsession, about making sense of the world to myself and sharing those insights with others. The work, inevitably, is highly personal, even semi-autobiographical, projecting my involvement in politics, teaching history, extensive travel, and absorption in music, literature, the arts, religion, philosophy, ethics, and decades of work with a disaster relief organisation and campaigns to reduce blindness. As a student in 1950, I was profoundly influenced by the great philosopher Bertrand Russell, and observed him in Melbourne at close quarters. He said: ‘Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind’. I set out the convolvulated history of the Dictionary of World Biography in my autobiography A Thinking Reed(Allen and Unwin, 2006). A variant of the text appeared as the Introduction in six editions of the DWB published by ANU Press 2014–19. ‘True Biographies of Nations?’ (edited by Karen Fox, ANU Press, 2019), a collection of papers presented at a seminar in Canberra in July 2016 about dictionaries of biography generally, includes my own contribution, ‘Writing a Dictionary of World Biography’. This Introduction draws from all three sources. In the mid-1950s I had been puzzled that no comprehensive biographical dictionary was available in paperback at a modest price. I determined to fill the gap. As a university law student I had been concerned that so many contemporaries had either a sketchy, or nonexistent, grasp of recent political history, let alone familiarity with great composers, philosophers or discoverers in other disciplines, such as medicine. -

HANS KELLER ARCHIVE: working copy A1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49 A1/1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49: independent work This section contains all Keller’s unpublished manuscripts dating from the 1940s, apart from those connected with his collaboration with Margaret Phillips (see A1/2 below). With the exception of one pocket diary from 1938, the Archive contains no material prior to his arrival in Britain at the end of that year. After his release from internment in 1941, Keller divided himself between musical and psychoanalytical studies. As a violinist, he gained the LRAM teacher’s diploma in April 1943, and was relatively active as an orchestral and chamber-music player. As a writer, however, his principal concern in the first half of the decade was not music, but psychoanalysis. Although the majority of the musical writings listed below are undated, those which are probably from this earlier period are all concerned with the psychology of music. Similarly, the short stories, poems and aphorisms show their author’s interest in psychology. Keller’s notes and reading-lists from this period indicate an exhaustive study of Freudian literature and, from his correspondence with Margaret Phillips, it appears that he did have thoughts of becoming a professional analyst. At he beginning of 1946, however, there was a decisive change in the focus of his work, when music began to replace psychology as his principal subject. It is possible that his first (accidental) hearing of Britten’s Peter Grimes played an important part in this change, and Britten’s music is the subject of several early articles. -
