ARTICLE ISSN 2651 - 5210 MODULAR 2019;2(2):21-45 The Cultural Sustainability: Merzifon Anatolia College, Turkey Gizem Özerol1, Aysu Akalın2 Received: 19 November 2019 - Accepted: 17 December 2019 Abstract The article proposes an analysis of the role of American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) during the late Ottoman and the early nationalist (Republican) Turkey and focusses especially on the ABCFM organization and the role of Protestant missionaries, which they succeeded in establishing autonomous schools, hospitals, clinics, orphanages, lodgings and ateliers not only in the capitals, but also in provinces. The American Board began evangelism among Armenians, and the education and the social services became part of the Protestant movement in the Near East. Following efforts to Christianize the nations through evangelism, in the mid of 19th century, Merzifon (Marsovan) province was chosen due to its location in the middle of Anatolia and Merzifon Anatolia College was designed as an important ‘station’ in order to support the American missionary movements. Then, between the years 1886 and 1938, ABCFM built strong connections with Anatolia College in Merzifon to gain a very important strategic position. In the context of the First World War, the function of the Anatolia College buildings has changed for different aims; the military used these buildings as the Artillery Regiment. After the war the ABCFM’s network broke down but its strong contribution to present education in Turkey is inevitable. The site as a heritage is still an active part of the city’s cultural life with some existing buildings of ABCFM supporting culture and education. -

However, we encourage applicants to apply as early as possible as the School may have limited capacity left. To proceed with the admissions, please follow the steps below: 1. Apply online on http://bsjakarta.openapply.com. 2. Submit supporting documents which consist of - but are not limited to - the following documents in soft copies: • passports • stay permits (for expat only) • report cards (for the last two academic years) • family registration (for Indonesia national only) • health card and • a letter of recommendation from the previous school for a child who needs special support. 3. Pay a non-refundable application fee of IDR 4,000,000 per applicant upon submission of the application. This may be paid in cash to the BSJ School cashier or via bank transfer. Please refer to the School Fees leaflet for the School Bank Account details. 4. Complete the entrance assessment and interview (if applicable) for applicants who have completed all the admission documents required. 5. Final decisions on all applications rest with the Head of Primary for Primary levels (Kindergarten 1 - Year 6) and the Head/Deputy Head of Secondary for Secondary levels (Year 7 - Year 13). BSJ will cancel the enrolment of applicants which proves to be false, fraudulent, incomplete or misleading. -

In these six years, the institution has clearly grown more complex with addition of the Anatolia Elementary School, the MBA at ACT and a World Bank professional training program throughout Southeast Europe. Yet we have worked hard, and with some success I believe, to keep at each level the human scale and focus on the individual student for which, well into its second century, our institution continues to be known. At the six-year mark, I consider myself blessed with a superb senior management team. Dr. Panos Kanellis, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, will, along with me, be devoting particular attention to ACT over the coming year. -

It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. I hope this message finds you in good health and spirit. I am happy to announce that 2018 was another fantastic year for our Department. Our 3 Volcanic Processes Takes Field Trip to Nevada and California faculty, staff, and students continue to make significant contributions to the mission of Illinois State in areas of teaching and student mentorship, scholarship, professional Current Staff service, and outreach activities. This fall, we launched our new interdisciplinary program Donors 2017-18 in Environmental Systems Science and Sustainability (ESSS) with 11 students enrolled 4 Dunes, Dutch, and Memories in at census day. The Department became a permanent home to the Illinois Geographic Michigan Alliance. Its activities will continue to serve teachers and the geography discipline across the state of Illinois for years to come; these initiatives will be made possible through an $800,000 endowment from 5 Social Science Geography Education Major Interns in the National Geographic Society to the Department. Taichung, Taiwan 6 Faculty Spotlight The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary for our Geology Program. We have taken the opportunity to honor this important milestone by hosting a variety of events throughout the course of the year, starting with a 50th Anniversary Field Camp reunion this past August in Cody, Wyoming. Twenty-two alumni 7 Alums Fund Field Experiences for Students from over a dozen graduation years joined in the celebration.
