PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I am sadened to tell you of the death of Charter Member and Associate Editor, Catherine Mann on August 2, 1993. The entire quarterly could be taken up with information about her and you will see more in another area. Our deepest sympathy goes to her daughter and two brothers. Those who were not able to make our July 10th meeting missed a good one, plus a good program presented by Mr. Charles S. Rice of Huntsville. He presented valuable information on the use of Military records in research. We want to thank him for coming, and we also want to thank him for donating a book. The Sword of "Bushwacker" Johnston, which will be added to our library. We still have volunteers who are assisting in several tasks of the society, and we appreciate their efforts and assistance. All of us benefit from their work. The writer and others are surveying cemeteries in Etowah County, and this includes small family plots, plus the black cemeteries. We have located 25 or 30 little known family cemeteries, some of which have been destroyed. However, we will have a record of them, and we hope to have the surveys in printed form in the near future. We trust this effort will benefit those who have roots in our area, and we encourage all who read this to consider surveying in your areas, especially in the Southeast. If we found this number of cemeteries in the smallest Alabama county, we feel you will find several in your area. If you find a cemetery in this category, we can publish the information in later quarterlies.

GOOD NEWS! The Society has just purchased from an estate sale ninty-three genealogical reference and family research books. We are also fortunate that a family has donated twenty-six similar books to the library. Mrs. Keenum, our Librarian, will give full details on these books in the next quarterly magazine.

We are always interested in hearing from you with information of interest to our members, and wish you good luck in your research.

W. A. Lewis President

MINUTES

The Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society met for the quarterly meeting at Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden on July 10, 1993. Our President, Mr. W. A. Lewis, called the meeting to order and welcomed all new members and visitors. The pledge of allegiance was led by Mr. Doyle Johns, and the treasurer, Mr. Lawrence Gore gave a full report on the past quarter. The current balance in the bank account is $8,460.00. Ms. Sybil McCluskey gave us a report on the condition of Cathrine Mann, our associate editor, and asked that our prayers and thoughts be with her. It was also reported that Elizabeth Yancey, the program chairman, was also sick. Membership chairman, Jean Walker reported we have 169 members thus far for 1993-1994. Ms. McCluskey requested members who have interesting genealogical material that could be used in future quarterlies be submitted to her. This would include items such as Bible Records, 9 Church Records, School Records, Cemetery Records, Diaries, family history sketches, etc. President Lewis introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Charles Rice. Mr. Rice is a former University lecturer, a Vietnam Veteran, Peace Corps volunteer, writer, Civil War historian and a teacher at Redstone Arsenal. He gave very interesting information on differences between North and South Alabama before and during the Civil War. Mr. Rice led us through eight steps in finding military records of our ancestors. We enjoyed fellowship and delicious refreshments brought by several of the members.

ALLEN J. WILLETT of Hollingsworth, Calhoun County, Alabama Allen J. Willett was born in December, 1848, in Tennessee (born 1849 or 1850 according to the 1880 census). Allen Willett's birth month and year of December, 1848, is taken from the 1900 Calhoun County, Alabama, census. Allen J. Willett married 1st about 1865 (wife's name unknown, and presumably she had died before 1880). They evidently lived in Alabama (at least in 1866 when his 1st child, Mary was born). Allen J. Willett married 2d in the summer of 1880 Febe (b 1853, Alabama, according to the 1880 Etowah County census). In the 1880 census, "A. Willett and Febe" were residents of Hokes Bluff, Etowah County, Alabama, and only one (of five) children listed after Febe is mentioned as a daughter of "A. Willett." Allen Willett married 3d about 1895 (most likely in Alabama) Phoeby A. Willett (b 1847 in Georgia) who was most likely a widow and who brought with her Willett step-children and their families. In 1900, "Allen J. Willett and Phoeby A." were living in Hollingsworth, Calhoun County, Alabama. Allen J. Willett married 4th about 1905 Curry (b 1888). She was only 22 in 1910 when the census was taken and had a 3 year old son, John A. Willett! A seven (7) year old Pete Willett is listed as a grandson of Allen J. Willett. Allen J. Willett died after 1910 and is reputed to be buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Etowah County, Alabama. However, no tombstone could be found by Mr. Wolfert in April, 1989. Calhoun County is adjacent to Etowah County, both are northeast of Birmingham. (1880 Hokes Bluff, Etowah County, Alabama, census; 1900 Precinct 7, Hollingsworth, Calhoun County, Alabama, census; 1910 Etowah County, Alabama, census; Wolfert file).
