The Bonfire Of The Vanities NOTES: I consider The Bonfire Of The Vanities the greatest American novel of the post-World War II era, or at least the best one I ever read. Radical Chic is, I believe, the greatest piece of social journalism of my lifetime as he exposed the pretentious pose and sanctimony of effete liberals like Leonard Bernstein trying to “get down” with the Black Panthers. It’s as relevant today as when he wrote it nearly a half- century ago. The Me Decade invented a phrase that lasts to this day and is the defining book about the self-indulgent seventies. The Right Stuff is not only the definitive account of the amazing American space program of the 1960s; it is an astonishing example of open-minded in-depth reporting and proves Wolfe is the great social observer of the last century of American life. The Painted Word is his mockery of the elevation of third rate crap into contemporary art. Kandy-Kolored forever changed American writing by throwing all rules of grammar, punctuation and style out the window as we were introduced to the amazing California car culture of the 1960s. The New Journalism is a great collection of the best writing of the era, most of which was inspired by him and linguistic rule-breaking and use of fiction tools in writing non-fiction. From Bauhaus To Our House is great social commentary on how architecture essentially makes our world look the way it does. A Man In Full, I think, was Wolfe writing about himself coping with depression (but I could be wrong). The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test was Wolfe’s first big article and was the first real look at the burgeoning LSD and hippie counter-culture. Project Mercury - America’s First Manned Missions - The dynamic Project Mercury, which put America’s first voyagers into space, is considered by many to be one of the most significant periods of scientific and technological advances in our nation’s history. The program which ran from 1958 – 1963 marked the rigorous early years of the “Space Race” as the United States and Soviet Union battled in a quest to be the first to land on the moon. Project Mercury began on October 7, 1958 just one year and three days after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first-ever artificial satellite to be put into orbit. Unlike early satellite missions that were not manned, the main goal of the Mercury Program was to put humans into space. The project began by selecting the first human voyagers to fly the missions; they were to be called astronauts. Chosen by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in April 1959, the group was called the Original Seven or Astronaut Group 1. They were introduced in civilian dress, deliberately to project an air of being average Americans. In reality, they were all trained military test pilots, college educated, most as engineers, in superior health physically and psychologically, with a focus on their purpose and they possessed charming personalities. In short time, with growing curiosity about their risky undertaking, the astronauts quickly gained celebrity status and elite standing with the public. Griffin Administrator National Aeronautics and Space Administration Los Angeles Air Force Base El Segundo, California 14 September 2008 I want to thank Congresswoman Jane Harman for giving me the excuse I deeply desired to escape Washington for southern California, “God’s country”, and one of my former homes, with sunny weather and beautiful beaches. It is a great place for aerospace engineers to ponder the fluid dynamics of the waves as well, as well as those to be found in the Manhattan Beach Brewery. And I want to thank the Air Force for hosting us here tonight in a place commonly referred to as the Hollywood Air Force Base. Tom Sheriden, the commander of the Space & Missile System Center, walks in the footsteps of giants in our business. One of my former mentors and personal heroes was General Bernard (“Benny”) Schriever, who came to Los Angeles in 1954 with a small, elite group of officers who built the Thor, Atlas, Titan, and Minuteman missiles, the foundation for all future aerospace systems launched into orbit. General Schriever also helped NASA in the early days of the space program and Project Mercury, the subject of Tom Wolfe’s elegant book The Right Stuff. For that, NASA’s and our nation’s success in space exploration is due in part to the men and women of the Air Force Space & Missile Systems Center.
