  • IME Annual Report 2020-2021 Low Size
Supported by Annual Report 2020-2021 Only in the darkness can “ you see the stars. ― Martin Luther King “ Namaste We have collectively endured one of the defining experiences of our life and times. What started off as a pause in the hustle and bustle of daily life has now become a happening that will forever define the way we see the world. Many of us experienced loss – of loved ones, of time, of precious moments, and of a sense of normalcy. There were days when I questioned everything, and felt the meaninglessness of it all. At the same time, I realized that the future is built one day at a time, by the seemingly small actions we take each day; that, as Martin Luther King said, everything that is done in the world is done by hope. And so, we see ourselves looking back at a most strange year, but one that I am glad to report has been extremely productive for the Indian Music Experience Museum, in our mission to build community through music. The team at IME seamlessly adapted to the online world. We ensured the continuity of music education at the Learning Centre. We unveiled two new online exhibits through an important partnership with Google Art and Culture. Our work in preserving musical traditions achieved an important milestone through the creation of an online archive on the life and works of legendary violinist and composer, Mysore T. Chowdiah, in collaboration with the Shankar Mahadevan Academy. We presented a wide variety of talks, discussions, workshops, showcases, and exhibit walkthroughs online, growing our audience beyond the geographic limitations of in-person events.

LUTSF Awardee: Dr Elena Catalano Project Title: Nrityagram Intensive Summer Workshop Aim: develop technical, performance, teaching and choreographic skills in Odissi Durations: 1 month (12th June to 9th July 2017) Funding received: - Lisa Ullman Travel Scholarship Fund £775 - Movin’Up – Gai Giovani Artisti Italiani €1500 - Kingston University, Dance Department £200 Thanks to the Lisa Ullman Travel Scholarship, and further funding received by Gai-Giovani Artisti Italiani and Kingston University, this summer I was able to undertake one of the most enriching experiences of my life as a dancer. I practice Odissi, an Indian classical dance form, which unlike bharatanatyam and kathak is not yet well known and widely practiced in the UK, despite the breadth and depth of its technical vocabulary and choreographic potential. I have carried out most of my training in India under gurus of international acclaim, but it has always been my ambition to study for an intensive period at Nrityagram, a dance village near Bangalore. Nrityagram was founded in 1990 in order to provide unique space where future generations of dancers could focus exclusively on their artistic practice and deepen their understanding of Indian philosophy and performance aesthetics. Nrityagram is presently home to some of the finest odissi dancers in the world, who have electrified audiences both in India and abroad with their distinctive style and breathtaking choreographies, mainly created by artistic director Surupa Sen. Sen’s choreographic work is know for its contemporary aesthetics which is clearly visible in the use of space, time and dynamics, while holding on traditional themes and symbolism. The result feels simultaneously timeless and continuously fresh, setting Nrityagram Ensemble apart from any other odissi professional company, for their originality and aesthetic appeal.

  • Banis / बानी and Schools Are Aplenty
PAPER: 3 Detail Study Of Bharatanatyam, Devadasis-Natuvnar, Nritya And Nritta, Different Bani-s, Present Status, Institutions, Artists Module 18 Institutions Of Bharatanatyam Present day Bharatanatyam banis / बानी and schools are aplenty. There are many branches of main banis and some as far as in New Jersey in USA or Ukhrul in Manipur! Since Bharatanatyam has spread far and wide, each dancer is adding something to what was learnt and trying to extend its boundaries and body. Many dancers are also teachers today, so they are adding new poses or postures and calling it sub banis or schools. Schools today mean individual teaching establishments, not a generic bani or style. It means in one city itself, say small town like Mysore or Baroda, there could be ten schools of Bharatanatyam. Each teaching same dance, differently. In that, there is no standardization. In one area of a big metro like Chennai or Bangalore, Mylapore or Malleswaram, there are over a dozen teachers teaching from same bani differently. This is not to break away as much as what one learnt from a guru and how much. Schools of Bharatanatyam today within one city can be in hundreds, especially nerve centre of dance like Chennai. The Dhananjayans, Chandrasekhars, Ambika Buch, Savitri Jagannath Rao, M.V. 1 Narasimhachari and Vasanthalakshmi, Sheejith Krishna, P.T. Narendran, Shijith Nambiar and Parvathy Menon teach the Kalakshetra style. J. Suryanarayanamurthy, a disciple of the Dhananjayans, is a popular teacher. Sreelatha Vinod, Tulsi Badrinath, Radhika Surajit, Shobana Bhalchandra are ardent disciples of the Dhananjayans and faithfully follow their teachers’ teachings.
