He was the husband of the late Estelle (Falardeau) Dubeau. Born in Woonsocket, Frank was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam war. For many years he worked as a machinist for the former Carol Ca- ble/Miller Machine Co. before retiring in 2006. Frank loved to work with his hands. He was an especially gifted woodworker, and he also crafted his own telescopes. Frank was a member of the VFW Post 11519, the American Veterans Association, and the Vietnam Veter- ans of America. Frank is survived by three daughters and four grandchil- dren, and his dear friend Lucille Laliberte of Blackstone. Ser- vices and burial with military honors are private.

(Mirametrics) What are Messier Objects? • Messier objects are a list of astronomical sources compiled by Charles Messier, an 18th and early 19th century astronomer. He created a list of distracting objects to avoid while comet hunting. This list now contains over 110 objects, many of which are the most famous astronomical bodies known. The list contains planetary nebula, star clusters, and other galaxies. - Bobby Martinez The Telescope The telescope used to take these images is an Astronomical Consultants and Equipment (ACE) 24- inch (0.61-meter) Ritchey-Chretien reflecting telescope. It has a focal ratio of F6.2 and is supported on a structure independent of the building that houses it. It is equipped with a Finger Lakes 1kx1k CCD camera cooled to -30o C at the Cassegrain focus. It is equipped with dual filter wheels, the first containing UBVRI scientific filters and the second RGBL color filters. Messier 1 Found 6,500 light years away in the constellation of Taurus, the Crab Nebula (known as M1) is a supernova remnant. The original supernova that formed the crab nebula was observed by Chinese, Japanese and Arab astronomers in 1054 AD as an incredibly bright “Guest star” which was visible for over twenty-two months. The supernova that produced the Crab Nebula is thought to have been an evolved star roughly ten times more massive than the Sun.

McGovern The completion of the investigation mentioned in pr evious reports on the atmosphere of Mercury, in conjunction with Drs. S. I. Rasool and S. H. Gross, resulted in the following conclusions: 1. An atmosphere of pure argon cannot be stable against gravita- tional escape since argon with its poor radiative transfer characteristics will produce prohibitively high exospheric tempteratures, (Tex > 10, OO06K). 2. If Moroz's observations are correct and C02 is present in the atmosphere of Mercury, then the production of CO by photodissociation in the upper atmosphere will produce a cooling mechanism of sufficient strength that exospheric temperatures will result which are stable against thermal escape. The calculated exospheric temperatures were between 800°K. and 1800°K.     OBITUARY Professor Margaret Burbidge obituary Trailblazing astronomer hailed as ‘Lady Stardust’ who became the first woman director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory Wednesday April 08 2020, 12.01am, The Times Margaret Burbidge showed how heavier elements are produced from lighter ones in stars AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY In August 1944 Margaret Burbidge, then a young astronomer driven by a thirst for knowledge that would later define her, was studying for her PhD thesis. Her subject was a star called Gamma Cassiopeiae and she was not going to allow the Second World War to stand in her way. Each evening she would travel from the family home close to Hampstead Heath to the University of London Observatory at Mill Hill Park and open up the telescope named after its donor, JG Wilson. She would then spend hours sitting in the cramped and cold space below it, alone with her view of the stars. At that time the Luftwaffe was sending doodlebug flying bombs across the Channel to terrorise the capital but Burbidge ignored the danger. On the night of August 3, her log notes that shortly before 10pm, just after she had opened up the telescope, a flying bomb exploded so close to the observatory that the reverberations from the impact shifted the star out of the telescope’s field of vision. Undeterred she started her observations again a few minutes later only for another doodlebug to explode, this time farther away. Although the star was temporarily lost again she quickly recovered it and completed her observations. “Those nights, standing or sitting on the ladder in the dome of the Wilson reflector .

    MONTHLY OBSERVER’S CHALLENGE Las Vegas Astronomical Society Compiled by: Roger Ivester, Boiling Springs, North Carolina & Fred Rayworth, Las Vegas, Nevada With special assistance from: Rob Lambert, Las Vegas, Nevada JUNE 2014 Messier 53 (M53)/NGC-5053 – Globular Cluster Pair In Coma Berenices Introduction The purpose of the observer’s challenge is to encourage the pursuit of visual observing. It is open to everyone that is interested, and if you are able to contribute notes, drawings, or photographs, we will be happy to include them in our monthly summary. Observing is not only a pleasure, but an art. With the main focus of amateur astronomy on astrophotography, many times people tend to forget how it was in the days before cameras, clock drives, and GOTO. Astronomy depended on what was seen through the eyepiece. Not only did it satisfy an innate curiosity, but it allowed the first astronomers to discover the beauty and the wonderment of the night sky. Before photography, all observations depended on what the astronomer saw in the eyepiece, and how they recorded their observations. This was done through notes and drawings and that is the tradition we are stressing in the observers challenge. By combining our visual observations with our drawings, and sometimes, astrophotography (from those with the equipment and talent to do so), we get a unique understanding of what it is like to look through an eyepiece, and to see what is really there. The hope is that you will read through these notes and become inspired to take more time at the eyepiece studying each object, and looking for those subtle details that you might never have noticed before.

At any rate, we figured now would be as good a time as any to get the gang back together for a good old fashioned potluck style barbecue: to that end, we’ve moved the July meeting to the Sunday, 11 July at 4PM at HRPO.
