Saturday September 28th at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church, Bridestowe Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir Tickets cost £5 Available from 50/50 Shop, Brian Maddaford, John Horn and Jennifer Thorne. Proceeds to local charities. About the choir in their own words.. Since being formed five years ago the Choir continues to grow in strength and popularity. Much of the success is undoubtedly due to the choir‘s good fortune in having the musical talents of Rosemary Cole as Director of Music. We have 38 choristers on a good day and the sections are well balanced. We are always looking for new members of all ages and if you are interested in joining please see our Contact Us‘ page on our website for further details. The Choir rehearse at Callington Methodist Church hall, every Tuesday evening in preparation for the many concerts that have been booked. Our philosophy is never to be complacent so we practise hard, and we are not afraid to try new music outside the realms of the usual male voice repertoire and have a lot of fun in doing so. As in previous years the choir was has performed numerous concerts this year with the schedule for 2014 filling up fast. We hope to continue to raise many hundreds of pounds for charity. BaSE Page 2 BRIDESTOWE RAM ROAST On behalf of the Ram Roast Organisers and the Bridestowe Bridestowe Village Hall Management Committee, Ram Roast we would like to thank everyone for making this year's Ram Roast yet another success despite some extreme and appalling weather on the Friday evening whilst setting up and during the event itself, causing it to be abandoned prematurely. Everyone plays an important part in keeping the tradition of the Ram Roast going whether it is being involved in its organizing, running a stall, help setting up, being involved in the entertainment, supporting the raffle or just coming along on the day to have a good time.

Unfortunately, the organizing committee of the Ram Roast has in recent years declined to a small number of individuals as local interest has waned. To secure the future of the Ram Roast new blood is needed to move the event forward in a new direction with fresh ideas and to the event vibrant and alive. Without new blood and support the village may lose the Ram Roast as it not only needs a commitment to attend the event, but also more help in its planning and setting up.

A special thanks goes to Jane Neild, Wendy and Dave Firkin, Roseanne and Jane Waddington, Phil Rattenbury and Alison Young who all played a major role in the planning and doing as much as they could to bring about the smooth running of the event.

A big thanks also goes to Graham Crocker our MC on the day and all those musicians who performed, including our attractions, South West Falconry and Hildsvin Dark Age Society (Vikings). Both attractions were enjoyed by everyone and it was such a shame that they could not complete their proposed displays due to the weather.

This year's Raffle was yet again a great success and we are grateful to all those individuals and companies who supported us by providing some excellent prizes. A special thanks also goes to Roseanne and Jane Waddington at the White Hart Public House who helped sell raffle tickets and provided the Ram Roast Bar, making a donation from their sales. Thanks also goes to Dave and Kriss Atherley-Hewings at Bridestowe Post Office who also sold a large amount of raffle tickets. Thanks also goes to Dave Trant for providing the stage and hay bales, Michael Pearce, Darren and Caroline Baker for transporting tables, chairs and gazebos, John Haley for tidying everything away after the event, and to everyone who came out on a number of occasions to set up or take down tables and gazebos. Thanks to Michael Pearce and Glebe Park who shared the cost of the Portaloo - not very glamorous but convenient! Thanks also to anyone else that contributed in some way either BaSE Page 3 setting up or on the day doing something to help. Although this summer has seen some brilliant weather leading up to August. On the Friday of the Ram Roast, the weather changed to an almighty electrical storm with hail stones, hampering the setting up of the gazebos etc. On the morning of the Ram Roast the weather had improved and setting up was completed in time for the event to commence punctually. Unfortunately, after about an hour, the weather turned again to heavy rain and eventually the only sensible decision that could be made was to terminate this year's event early. However, despite the weather, this year's Ram Roast still raised £1,545.50p towards the Village Hall funds which will be put to good use in various ways. Thanks again to everyone who helped in some way and to those who attended and supported the event. Alan Neild LOCAL The THURSDAY MORNING GROUP PLUMBER will be meeting up again Est. 30 Years on 26th September when we will be going along Bridestowe & to Lydford Gorge (not District walking the Gorge, ladies !!) Bridestowe Post Office: a Rural Round by Howard Barkell

Wednesday 25 September at 7.30pm

The Post Office has always been at the heart of village life, but was even more vital when ordinary folk had no phone, let alone the internet. During such an era, Howard Barkell's parents and great aunt were involved in running Bridestowe Post Office, and no doubt had a special insight into the life of the village. His collection of postcards and photos also reveals a very different view of Bridestowe from today, and indeed the Post Office that his forebears ran no longer stands. Anyone with any knowledge of Bridestowe will no doubt find this an interesting and entertaining evening and visitors may like to find out more about our programme of talks and visits.

We meet at Broadley Chapel, near Lewdown at 7.30pm. Charge £2 for members, £3 for non-members to include light refreshments. Visitors may like to phone Hilary (01566 783396) or Mary (01837 861510) nearer the time, to check there has not been a rare change of programme, or for further information.

BaSE Page 15 BaSE Page 16 Tavistock Area Support Services

Helping older drivers in Devon stay safe Older drivers in the Tavistock area are being offered help to stay safe on the county's roads. Devon County Council, in partnership with Devon and Police offers advice, training and support to older motorists through its Driving Safer for Longer scheme. Road safety experts involved with the scheme will be on hand at Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS) at The Anchorage Centre from 10am to 12 noon on Tuesday 3 September to provide information and guidance to drivers on how to keep their skills up- to-date. The Driving Safer for Longer initiative addresses health-related driving issues, while giving motorists practical skills to enable them to review their ability. An information pack is provided to help motorists understand how the ageing process may affect their driving skills. Drivers over the age of 70 have to re-apply for a driving licence and keeping track of changes to the highway code and road signs can be difficult for any driver. Older drivers face the added concern of how the ageing process may affect eyesight, memory, decision- making and reaction times - all important factors while driving. Last year in Devon, one in every five car drivers killed in road collisions were aged over 65. Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "A driving licence is vital for many people, and many older drivers find it especially important for maintaining their independence, particularly if they live in a rural part of the county and rely on their car to get out and about. Older drivers may be concerned at keeping their driving skills up to date or may be looking for friendly, professional advice about their driving future and this event in Tavistock deals with those issues and provides essential guidance." "This is a flagship scheme which offered advice and training to over 1,400 older drivers last year alone. It offers valuable support to give people the help they need to extend their driving for longer and looks at practical alternatives to driving so that older motorists are prepared and confident about the time when they may choose stop driving themselves.“ Tavistock Area Support Services is a local charity supporting older and disabled people in Tavistock and outlying areas. Andy Lyle, Manager of TASS, said: "We are always looking for ways of supporting people to remain independent through transport, day services and support. Part of that support is bringing in other professionals to talk about issues that affect us in our everyday living, and being able to drive safer for longer through the support of Devon County

BaSE Page 17 Council and Devon and Cornwall Police is one way of remaining independent whilst driving safely.“ The population of Devon is older than ever before. Around 23% of the population is now aged over 65, compared with 20% in 2003. With that trend set to continue the percentage of older drivers on the road is increasing. Sergeant Glenn Bullock, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "Devon & Cornwall Police is committed to maintaining the safety of all road users and we recognise that the population of Devon, and therefore an increasing proportion of drivers, is getting progressively older. The Driving Safer For Longer initiative offers useful information to help senior motorists keep driving for as long and as safely as possible. We want older people to enjoy their driving whilst making them aware of the potential impact that older age can have, not only their own driving, but also that of other road users.“ To book a place at the Driving Safer for Longer event at Tavistock Area Support Services, or for further details, call 01822 616958

Wild flowers in September - Common Toadflax There are fewer flowers around but you may spot Common Toadflax, Linaria vulgaris, a common plant of waste grounds, grasslands, roadside verges and hedgerows. It can certainly be seen growing along the Granite Way. Its orange and yellow flowers appear in June and can be seen well into November; they look like the flowers of snapdragons (familiar garden plants), and are often densely packed. Its common name has a double derivation. The leaves - very narrow and spirally arranged up the stem - are like those of flax, and the plant was regarded as so useless as to be fit only for toads. The colour of the flowers give the plant its other common name of ‘Butter and Eggs'. The unusual shape of the flowers caused it to be likened to all kinds of creatures, real and mythical. The folk names "lion's mouth," "devil's head," "weasel snout," "pig's chop" and "squeeze jaw" all refer to the way in which the mouth of the flower opens if its sides are squeezed.

Sugarcraft Classes Starting on Tuesday 17th September at Sourton Parish Hall from 7pm to 9pm. Two hours of making flowers, foliage, Christmas items to put on your Christmas cake. In November there will be a work shop day for you to come along and marzipan, ice and decorate your Christmas cake. More details of work shop later. Have you seen that odd couple out running lately?

Jon and Su O'Neill of Shelstone Cottage, Launceston Road, Bridestowe are training for the Berlin Marathon on the 29th September. Why? Su (who hates running normally) has decided to run this marathon to raise as much money for her chosen charity - the Bone Cancer Research Trust. Jon has very kindly offered to run too for moral support as training is tough! Why the Bone Cancer Research Trust? This year Su lost her best friend at 28 years old to Bone Cancer. She was diagnosed in January with the very bleak prognosis that nothing could be done to try and treat her cancer as it was rare, advanced and poorly responsive to any currently known therapy. So at 28 years old she was facing just a few weeks left of life. I’m running for BCRT in the hope that with money raised and research done that we can prevent this happening to others.

Please help - visit www.justgiving.com/su-hates-running or come and visit us at the house to sponsor us if you can. Thank you!

BaSE Page 21 BaSE Joint Churches Report, September 2013

With this edition of BaSE there is a card for your notice-board in the kitchen (or wherever you put things you need to remember). It outlines special or more unusual services at our Bridestowe churches until the end of the year. Some people want to be in church most weeks, but others only want to be there occasionally, for things that particularly interest them. In the coming months there is Harvest and Christmas, both popular times for a wide variety of people. Family and café services can appeal to those who don't warm to more traditional church. Please keep this card handy, and be sure of a warm welcome to any of these special occasions.

Ram Roast There will be lots about the Ram Roast in other parts of BaSE. St Bridget's had our usual Cake Stall when we took just over £104 for church funds. A big thank you to all who donated cakes and to those people who purchased them. Luckily we had virtually sold out before the deluge which caused an early end to the afternoon's festivities. We also had the 50/50 Shop stall. Remember that the shop opens each Wednesday and Saturday morning.

Services Our Anglican/Methodist Family Service at St Bridget's was led on August 4th by Rev David Muir and was well attended, with Jo Waddington kindly reading the lesson. The congregation enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and joyful hymns which we have learned to expect from one of David's informal services... Then on August 11th, St Bridget's said farewell to Diane Porter, who is moving to Tavistock to be closer to family. Diane has been such a loyal supporter of church life, including playing the organ quite regularly, and also helping in many practical ways. She is not so far away and will continue to help us on occasion. On the same day, several of us from the Methodist Church travelled to Gwennap Pit, a place where John Wesley preached many times on his travels in Cornwall. A special service was led by the Chairs of the Cornwall and Devon Districts. We had a pasty picnic on on the way down, and the service finished with a Rodda’s cream tea! A very moving occasion.

Bell Ringing The annual Bell Ringing competition took place on August 17th. The standard of ringing was very high and it was good to hear St Bridget's bells being rung so well. Ten bands competed for the Ernie Chapman Perpetual Memorial Cup, with the winners being South Petherwin (’A' Team) with only 19 faults. Ten teams took part. This year the refreshments were organised by The Friends of St Bridget's, so a big ’thank you' to them. They sold over 60 cream teas! If you want to support the Friends to keep the building in BaSE Page 22 good repair, be in touch with them. The bell-ringing tower is high on their priority list! There is also growing interest within the village to have our own bell-ringing team again. If you fancy yourself in this, again be in touch.

Battle of Britain Our annual Battle of Britain service takes place on Sunday September 15th at 6.30pm, when we remember the huge debt we owe to those young men of Fighter Command and Bomber Command both aircrew and ground crew. Without their acts of bravery and the ultimate sacrifice made by so many of them, many of us would not be here today. The collection from this service will be donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund. Please note that there will be no service on the morning of the 15th.

Harvest We will be decorating the Parish Church for Harvest, on Saturday September 21st starting at 9.30am. All are welcome to help (just turn up), and we would be grateful for donations of flowers, greenery, vegetables and fruit. The service itself will be at 9.30am the following morning, Sunday 22nd. Then the Harvest Supper will be on Monday 23rd, this year at the Methodist Church (6.30pm for 7.00pm). Tickets obtainable at the Village Stores: adults £6.50 and children £3.25. Fresh produce will be auctioned, and proceeds from the auction will be donated to the charity Farming Community Network. The raffle will again be for a hamper containing a meal. If you would care to donate tin/packet soup, part-baked French stick or baton, vegetables, horseradish, gravy, biscuits for cheese, coffee/mints, please contact Carole Whiteley on 861559. The Methodist Church Harvest service will be on Sunday October 6th at 11am, and the Harvest Supper on Tuesday October 8th at 7pm. The speaker is Andy Jerrard, Rural Pastoral Worker. Menu: Pork and Apple casserole followed by a selection of sweets. Tickets £6.50.

Email: [email protected] BaSE Page 24 Dartmoor Brimbles (Reproduced from Legendary Dartmoor websiste www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk with kind permission from Tim Sandles)

To this day I can still remember when, as a boy, Granfer would produce the dreaded ‘yeller pail’ and I was told, “go fill ‘un bwoy.” There wasn’t much I hated doing but filling that sodding ‘yeller pail’ used to ‘hack I orf’ no end because it meant one of two things. Either going down the verges picking dandelion heads or scratting around the hedgerows for blackberries, the former meant yellow stained, bitter tasting fingers and the latter, scratches that made it look as if you’d gone ten rounds with a tiger. The harvest from both crops went into a lethal distillation that went under the loose heading of ‘home-made wine’ or ‘jollup’. The only bonus of the blackberries were that any surplus went into superb, finger-licking jam or hot steaming pies. Blackberries and bramble bushes, or ‘brimbles’ as they are called locally, grow on the lower moorlands and are a common sight in the hedgerows. They are also a common feature of superstitions and folklore, especially the time after the berries ripen or ‘blackberry time’. Depending on the local climate this was usually between late August and early October and a common belief was that after old Michaelmas Eve (October 10th) you should never pick or eat a blackberry because on that night the Devil would pee on them and the consequences would be dire. This tradition can be found all over Devon but the timing varies as does what the Devil did to the berries which ranged from cursing, spitting and peeing on them. It is thought that this idea stems from the story of how when the Devil was cast out of Heaven he fell to earth and landed in a brimble bush. As he was trying to extricate himself from the clutches of the tangle of thorns he cursed the bush. Every year since that event he spoils the berry crop on the anniversary of his landing by spitting etc on them.

Apart from the obvious use of the berries that actual brimbles served many purposes, firstly it was an ideal plant to have in a hedge as next to hawthorn it made an ideal stock-proof barrier. The long tendrils were also used to make twine which was often used in broom and basket making. The thorns would be removed and the tendril split and twisted, the end result was an amazingly strong length of twine. Brimble roots were crushed and used to make a yellowy- orange dye that was utilized in the wool and cloth industries. There is also an old story of how a long length of brimble would be cut and the thorns removed from all bar the last 3 - 4 inches. This was then shoved down a rabbit hole in a twisting, ‘corkscrew-like’ manner until it would go no further. Then with a few extra twists the brimble would be dragged out the hole with, hopefully, a rabbit that had been ensnared by the thorns on the end, hmmm. I recently recieved an email from someone who asked what a ‘brimbletapper’ was because he came across the term in a census of 1861, it was recorded as an occupation of a 67 year old gentleman from Islington who worked for a local farmer. I have never come across this term and would be grateful to hear from anyone who can enlighten me. Blackberry time was also know as a period when illnesses both in humans and animals increased. An old saying from Hennock was, “Baby’s not well, ‘tis blackberry time,” of the animals it was thought that horses, cats, and chickens suffered worse. Both brimble and berry have for centuries been used in various charms and cures. At North Tawton there is a story of a mother who took he daughter to the local doctor and said the girl was suffering from sore eyes. When asked why she was covered in scratches the mother related that she had tried to cure the girl herself by dragging her backwards BaSE Page 25 through an arched brimble bush three times after which she got the ‘old duck’ to ‘quack’ in her mouth three times. It was once said that to cure a wart the first seen blackberry of the season should be picked and rubbed over the wart and then thrown away. As the berry either rotted away or was eaten by some bird or animal the affliction would disappear. The brimble leaves when steamed and made into a drink were used to cure diarrhoea in children, as too would the green berries when eaten. Similarly, an ounce of fresh leaves infused in boiling water and drunk both night and morning could relieve the symptoms of shingles. Blackberry jam mixed into a cup of hot water was said to be a good cure for a sore throat, especially if blended with a little whisky. I reckon I should have complained of a sore throat before being sent out blackberry picking, at least the whisky might have dulled the senses against the bite of the thorns. Occasionally the brimble occurs in Dartmoor place-names such as Brimbley Ford and Brimley Farm and Lane plus a smattering of the ‘Bramble Cottages’. Today, you do not have to wait for the berries to ripen, you don’t even have to suffer a good ‘thorning’ to get the fruit, you simply wander down to Tesco’s and buy a punnit of weird looking things any time you fancy. Sad, isn’t it? this global world of, “I want it, and I want it now,” has taken away all the various seasonal treats and expectations. But what is more satisfying, sitting down and sipping a glass of home-made blackberry jollup as you inspect the exacted toll of thorny scars or eating a pie made of some insipid tasting, exotic mutation masquerading as a blackberry that has flown more miles than a moon shuttle.

I still have to this day, Granfer’s blackberry jollup recipe and should anybody wish to make some, here’s how he did it: Ingredients: 6lbs blackberries (kilograms had not been invented) 1 lemon 1 gallon boiling water (litres were things that kept the church warm) 4lb sugar 1 good slug of brandy (which knowing Granfer would have been a bottle but a small glass will adequately suffice) Yeast Method: 1) Wash blackberries, rind the lemon and slice thinly and put into a large bowl; pour over the boiling water. 2) Cover and ‘let un bide’ (stand) for three days, stirring daily. 3) Strain on to the sugar through muslin and stir well. Add the lemon juice and previously activated yeast. 4) Leave for a day in a warm place, then pour into a demi-john with an airlock. 5) Ferment out. Siphon-off, bottle, and remember - patience is a virtue!

Luck has not been on Bridestowe's side in the Devon League recently. Having been sitting comfortably above mid table in July having just beaten the top two sides, our Saturday X1 then lost several close games and suddenly, the weather having caused both home game against the two sides at the bottom of Division E to be abandoned, find themselves, as I write this, in some danger of relegation. When at full strength they are far too good a side to go down and we must hope that the situation can be retrieved in the last two games of the season.

The cream teas at Sourton Village Hall were a major success, not only raising £478 for club funds but also proving an enjoyable occasion for members and guests alike. Very many thanks to all who helped on the day and those who provided so much food of every sort The annual game against the President's XI will be played on 14th September when we hope that everyone will join us for tea. Due to the generosity of Richard and Naomi Nardi the refurbished pedestrian gate to the field will be re-hung shortly and the chestnut tree that they have kindly donated to the club will soon be planted. We are most grateful to Richard and Naomi for their support.

The long awaited shed for the gangs and tractor will be built before the winter sets in. Plans for the Fun Ride on 6th October are proceeding well. Details can be found on page 39 and on our website. Please spread the word to anyone in the equestrian world that this is taking place.

The AGM will take place shortly after that and details will appear in next month's BaSE.

BaSE Page 27 The Friends of St. Bridget's Church have reached a significant milestone! Just a few short months after their formation, the Friends of St. Bridget's have raised their first £1000.00. This has come from the support of the members and their contributions, as well as the fundraising events carried out during August. We managed to raise £51.30 at the Ram Roast, £174.00 at the quiz and £412.00 at the bell ringing competition!

A massive thank you to the committee (and family) members who have given up their time to plan and run the events, as well as contributing raffle prizes and refreshments, particularly for the recent bell ringing competition held at St. Bridget's.

We would also like to thank everyone who has come along and supported us by buying raffle tickets, having a go at our competitions at the Ram Roast (congratulations to Charlie Vernon for winning the guess the weight of the bell!) and participating in the quiz in the White Hart on the 14th August. A big thank you must go to Jane and Roseanne for hosting the quiz, providing the winners (and the booby) prize, as well as a raffle prize and the lovely garlic bread! Thank you also to Kris and David in Riverside Stores for the raffle prize and purchasing sweets on our behalf for prizes at the Ram Roast. Unfortunately the bad weather did not allow us to use them!

Forthcoming events The bell ringing challenge is progressing, with 10 Bridestowe residents from ages 10 to 'quite old' and all ages in between attending regular practices on a Friday evening. So far, these have been mostly silent practices (the bells have had their clappers immobilised), but soon practices will involve 'live' bells. Notices will be posted on the Church gates to inform residents and all practices will be over by 9.00 p.m. Sponsorship forms are located in the Church, the White Hart and Riverside Stores, so if you would like to support us in this endeavour and help us reach our second £1000.00, please put your details on a sponsorship form - every little helps! We have also notified our challenge to BBC Radio Devon, and hope that we will be featured on their Tony Day Sunday morning show. An interview with their producer is being arranged, so tune in on Sunday Plumbing and mornings to see if we are successful in getting our bell Gas services ringing challenge out to a much wider audience! Main and LPG gas appliances serviced and Thank you to everyone who donated prizes repaired for the tombola stall at the Ram Roast. Phone 01837 83702 Thank you too, to all who came and tried Mobile 07773966201 their luck. Despite the monsoon our stall did very well.
