Megan’s Dairy Moos by Megan Kupris

If you decide to start showing your cow or heifer, you’re going to need to halter break them, which is not as hard as it seems if you do it correctly. Usually, when people start deciding if they want to show cows they will take a calf to start with so they can control them easier. The first step is to put your halter on the calf and just let the calf get used to the halter. Then, just tie the halter to a pole so it gets the feel of the halter. When you tie it to the pole it will start to trust the halter. Every day for 5 to 7 days, you should walk your calf daily and go a farther distance than you did the past days. While you’re walking your calf, be sure to remember to keep a calm composure and a quiet voice to assure your calf nothing is going to hurt or scare them. A major tip in halter breaking is as your calf steps forward to release the pressure off the lead rope, this will reward your calf for responding. Personally, I like to keep treats like salt cubes or alfalfa cubes (which are Pep- per’s favorite) just to reward them, and this will also make them want to follow you. If you do decide to use the treatment method, your cows will be sure to check your pockets every time you walk them just to see if to have any yummy treats. Halter breaking will not just make your calf docile and good for show, but it will build a strong relationship between the owner and calf. Good Luck! The girls soccer seasons are ending. The girls varsity team had their 6th win against Owen D. Young Central School to clench a spot in sectional play. The girls team was 15 seed and faced Fabius Pompey on Tuesday, Oc- tober 22nd. They headed out with one sub, but the sub was injured and was not ready to play, so was played with no subs. At half time, Fabius had a lead and did not let down. The game was called because of the weather and field conditions with 26 minutes left in the second half. Unfortunately, the girls fell short and the season came to an end. A huge thank you goes out to all the seniors for their work through the years; you will all be greatly missed. The girls modified team is in a building year, struggling to come up with a win but they are having fun and working hard. Their season ends very soon. Basketball and Volleyball are approach-

The season for the boys soccer team was very rough this year. The team did not make sectionals and their overall record was 4-10. The team had a few rough patches with injuries, so they had no subs to put in the games when the team started with 14 players. The team went on a 5 game losing streak, but all of the games were very close. They lost to McGraw 4-3 in a very nerve wracking game when the other team pulled through and Brookfield could not score. Then they played Stockbridge, and Stockbridge was winning 4-1 at the beginning of the second half and Brookfield came back to tie it 4-4, with all 4 goals from Kodie Abrams. Then, with 3 minutes left in the game, Stockbridge had a break and scored 2 more times for a final score of 6-4. The next game was tough for the boys; they played Madison under the lights. It was Madison’s Senior Night and the Brookfield boys were trying to end their losing streak. Brookfield went out fired up and scored 2 early goals from Kodie Abrams. Madison scored 1 goal and the score remained the same for the rest of the first half and most of the second. With 12 minutes left in the game, Madison got a penal- ty kick from a hand ball inside of the box. The game was all tied up at 2-2. Then with 8 minutes left, Madison had a throw-in that they dribbled around the defenders to get a good shot on goal in the back right corner to close the game off. That was a very rough loss because the team really wanted to win and beat their rivals. The teams last game was a better game for them. They played Otselic Valley and won 4-1. Kaden Ondrako had 2 goals, Conner DiBrango had 1 goal, and Kodie Abrams had 1 goal. That was a good way to end their season. The team did not make sectionals this year. The seniors will be missed very much, especially because the season did not turn out the way anyone wanted it to. It was a rough sea- son for some of us, but that is okay there is always next year.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Jenna Head, Natalie Head, Shianne Morgan Brooke Terrier ( Class of 2015)

What did BCS do for you? “BCS has taught me that you can be- come friends with anyone. Our class of 11 was so close knit and we found some- thing we liked in each other, and not necessarily by choice.¨ What are some of your major achieve- ments? ¨I graduated high school third in the class, and then went on to get my Bache- lors degree in Applied Psychology at the end of August. I'm now a Foster Family Specialist and helping people in more ways than I ever knew I could.¨

What do miss the most about high school? “SPORTS. I played soccer and softball in college but it was nothing like playing in high school. I also miss the simplicity of being a high schooler. I hate to say it but I realize now how small things are that I thought were the end of the world.¨

Are you still a resident in the Brookfield Area? “No. My parents still live in the same house but I moved to Oriskany Falls a few years ago.¨

What advice would you give to younger kids coming into high school today? ¨I guess just enjoy it. Take as many college courses as you can in high school when its easier and you have people there willing to help you along the way. That will make it easier when it comes to applying and going to college.” ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Jenna Head, Natalie Head, Shianne Morgan

Donald “Walker” Reed (Class of 2015)

What did BCS do for you? “BCS provided me with a great education that allowed me to get to where I am today.”

What are some of your major achievements? “Some of my biggest achievements include becoming the head of a department in a small company and continuing my dedication to the Brookfield fire depart- ment as an interior firefighter.”

What do you miss the most about high school?

“I miss not having as many responsibilities and being part of sports teams.”

Are you still a resident in the Brookfield Area?

“Yes.”

What advice would you give to younger kids coming into high school today? “Pay attention, listen to your elders, respect the faculty and staff, and enjoy not having as many responsibilities. Appreciate having teachers who are willing to help you whenever you need help.”
