Performance Capabilities
Plants selected for adaptability to site constraints such as aspect, sun, shade, wind conditions and soil volume.
Sun/Shade • Suitability to be determined by ability to tolerate different strengths of sunlight and length (hours) of sunlight. • Species that tolerate high sunlight intensity generally have smaller leaves, compact forms and glaucous foliage. • Species selected for the eastern and northern façades and rooftops will need to prefer sunnier aspects, and tolerate heat and drier conditions. • Species selected for the southern façade and some podium courtyard areas will need to tolerate shadier conditions. • Species selected for internal spaces to be determined by ability to tolerate light availability and duration. Wind • Species selected to be tolerant of potentially high winds. • Species with leaves potentially damaged by wind to be limited and selected only for use in sheltered areas. Soil Volume • Species selected to balance tolerance for limited soil and plant performance expectations. • Spacing of selected species to be carefully determined, allowing for coverage expectations and plant durability. • Soil mixes and irrigation to maximise the potential of the limited soil volumes.
Form And Habit
Plants chosen for specific growth characteristics to ensure high quality of overall design.
Cascading Plants to: • Complement climbing plants; • Tumble down and cloak façade; and • Exaggerate height, accentuate form and vertical planes. Climbers to: • Complement cascading plants in the creation of the green façade
Plant Attributes
Plants grouped according to these characteristics to provide not only a visually beautiful outlook for each apartment, but reinforce a considered and deliberate overall scheme - gradation of foliage, flora, scale & texture and creative tension.
Foliage to: • Create a balanced rhythm and repetition in form with subtle colour differences; and • Create harmony through ‘companion planting’. Flowers to: • Be bold in colour and size, to be appreciated from the public domain; and • Be a dynamic landscape treatment for the façade. Scale to: • Allow appreciation on the ‘macro’ (from the street) and the ‘micro’ (from balconies) levels; • Create a dynamic landscape, through plant texture and foliage scale variations;
