Fab On Japanese Music Blog Interview of Craig Donovan and New Release/Debut Album “SKYSHINE”, March 31, 2018 (English Translation) 1. Could you tell us a little about your musical background? How did you start getting into music? Who were some of the artists that have influenced you? Craig: I am a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist, who plays electric and acoustic guitar, piano, synthesizer and mandolin. My musical background comes from my experience going up in New York City and in a family with an eclectic interest in music. Although my parents were not musicians, they provided me with a household full of different types of music. My parents had a large record collection that included everything from rock-n-roll (1950’s/1960’s), jazz and folk to opera, Broadway showtunes and music from other countries. I loved spending hours exploring the music in their record collection. Also, growing up in NYC gave me a strong background by exposing me to different cultures and musical and artistic forms. There were lots of opportunities to see and hear different styles of music played live by some of the greatest musicians. These experiences made a positive impression on me and set my direction toward music. I originally started studying classical guitar and then later gravitated to rock and songwriting. During my university and graduate school years, I performed at venues like Folk City and The Bitter End in Greenwich Village and CBGB’s in the Bowery. I then took a short respite from performing to complete professional studies. In 2013, I got back into songwriting and performing and now play on the east and west coasts of the United States and abroad. Some of the influential artists on my music include Elvis Costello, Paul Weller, James Taylor, Weezer and R.E.M, as well as J-rock bands, L’Arc-en-Ciel, Bump of Chicken and Asian Kung- Fu Generation. 2. I see that your music is influenced by J-rock. What made you get into that? Craig: I got into J-rock from having the wonderful opportunity to live and study in Japan. I lived in Mitaka, Tokyo and studied at International Christian University (ICU). At that time, one of my Japanese friends played for me the Dune and Tierra albums of L’Arc-en-Ciel. From that moment, I was smitten with the high caliber of L’Arc’s musicianship, hook-like melodies and various musical styles, especially Hyde’s vocals and Tetsu’s bass playing and compositions. I also discovered other influential J-rock artists from my love of manga and anime in subsequent years. I discovered Asian Kung-Fu Generation from their title song, “Rewrite” featured as the opening theme to Fullmetal Alchemist and Bump of Chicken from their song, “Arue” inspired by Rei Ayanami a character in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Currently, I am listening to Radwimps and impressed with Yojiro Noda’s songwriting, especially his piano and vocal compositions. 3. We would like to hear about your new release? Please tell us about it. Craig: On April 1, 2018, I released my debut 5-song, EP SKYSHINE. The album has a J-rock inspired feel with driving distortion and delay-drenched electric guitar complemented with softer acoustic guitar moments, catchy hook-like melodies, soaring vocals and harmonies, and heartfelt lyrics. The songs contain eclectic subject matter and explore deeply personal themes. For instance, the single, “Living Waters”, a song of hope, is a commentary on nuclear war, chronicling the true and unusual story of Hajime Iwanaga, a 14-year-old Japanese boy who survived the Nagasaki atomic bomb blast by swimming under 2-3 meters of water in the Urakami River. The piano-based rock ballad “Shadow to Your Light” deals with the unbreakable bond between two best friends and the importance of being there for another who is challenged with mental illness. Another song, “2025”, concerns the issue of human beings courageously walking their own path in life despite feelings of invisibility, misunderstanding and discrimination often encountered. The song was inspired by the LGBTQ movement. I see my music as a way to bring people together. The album contains artwork done by British digital artist, Robert Clear and a fully-illustrated 8- page booklet with lyrics in Japanese and English. The album is available digitally through popular services such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and Line Music and physical copies are available at my live shows and through Bandcamp and CD Baby. The album was recorded at two locations in the United States- Mystery Ton Studios in Monrovia, Maryland and Shab Row Recording in Frederick, Maryland. 4. Do you have a tour planned to support this album? What’s up next for you? What are your goals? Craig: Yes. I have an initial mini tour planned starting in early April 2018, where I will be performing in DC. In May, I will travel to Los Angeles, where I will be doing a podcast interview and live performance for The Creative Muse Hour/LA Talk, followed up with a series of live performances at venues in North Hollywood, CA and Echo Park, CA as well as a house concert in Granada Hills, CA. In June, I will perform in NYC and then travel to London, England and Reykjavic, Iceland, where performances at a few pubs are currently in the works. In 2019, I plan to return to Japan and looking forward to performing again at Mutsukado in Fukuoka and the Choi-Waru-Usagi Live House in Nakatsu, Kyushu as well as a first-time performance in Osaka. Details will be found on my website at www.CraigDonovanSongs.com as arrangements are finalized. As for what’s up next for me, I am composing songs for a new album that I am planning to release on vinyl as well as digitally in 2019-2020. I also plan to re-enter the recording studio early next year. My future goals are to continue writing and recording high quality music for my fans, successfully placing my music in film, television or anime, meeting musicians to collaborate with, and learning the shamisen. 5.
