The present Co-op building c1913, took over postal operations in 1918 by Frederick Rose until his passing in 1946. His wife Mrs Rose carried on the business and retired in 1955. Mr AW Patrick took over postmaster duties until 1974 and then a Mr Hambridge laterly at the shop currently known as St Lukes Hospice. Local postal deliveries ceased in 1953. PTO>> THE OLd VOLUNTEER iNN 1830-1904 & CROfT ViLLa The main road betwix Modbury & Plymouth known as the A379 was originally cut through in the 1820’s, a little later the Greysone Cottages were built (as pictured). Two rooms formed the “Volunteer Inn” named after the raising of local volunteers for the militia. A small ale house for weary travellers and carriers calling by for ale and food between 6am and 10am on the way to Plymouth. Finally George White took over in 1902 until its closure in 1904 when the C W Blundell brewery of Kingsbridge transferred the licence to the new Elburton Hotel built on “Dix’s farm”. It appears through records and research that Elburton village was indeed built up around the A379 known as Elburton Road. Whereas the Elburton Road started life in the 1820’s most of the village date back to the 1900’s. Take a Look at the Co-op building built 1913 note the letters HMH imprinted on the front of the building, initials of Helen Mary Harvey daughter of William the farmer who owned Battershalls farm. Although the present Co-op building is built on the site of old Finches farm (c1843). The present Co-op building was originally the post office and general store as mentioned on the cover page and operated by Frederick Rose. Co-op purchased the buildings known as 1 & 2 Harvey Cottages in 1944, Frederick Rose died two years later after working number 3 Harvey Cottages as the Post Office.. All the cottages were known as Harvey Terrace. (Currently: Co-op, Elburton News & Post office). Finches farm, was adjacent to what is now the Elburton Primary school property. Solomans farm, also backs on to Elburton school field (originally known as Northern Town Orchard) Solomans cottage & now disused barn’s still remain at the location 8 Springfield Road opposite Doreena Road junction.
