Dear Members, Since our last Newsletter, 2009 is in the past and we all hope for a better 2010, even though we have been able to hold our own and have programs that continue to expand. Many of our skaters have had injuries, some families have lost loved ones and some are dealing with illnesses which we hope will be alleviated this year. Our skaters have continued to pre- sent themselves in an outstanding manner and the past two weeks at Nationals was no different; they are to be congratulated for their hard work and perseverance. We had our Board Retreat December 4 & 5, 2009 which provided a great opportunity to look at where we have been, our strengths and weaknesses, where we need to streamline our organization and procedures as a Board and staff, and where we need to go for the future to the benefit of our membership. Thanks to the Board Members and the club staff for their participation, time and talent. A special thanks to Jim McManus for an outstanding job in organizing the logistics with our leader, Rose Snyder, the Board and staff. Extremely well done, Jim! Congratulations to our skaters on their outstanding performances at the New England and Easterns Skating Champion- ships, and to those who represented the United States at various international events. As we look at the list of skaters who will represent the Club at the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships next month, let us not forget the accomplish- ments of all of our competitors.     NAMES OF PLACES IN WINCHESTER Past & Present ABERJONA RIVER & ABERJONA POND Formerly also spelled Abbajona, “Aberjona” is believed to be a native name. Its meaning is unknown. It is probably related to the term “Aberginians” or Abarginny-men” which colonists William Wood, Capt. Ed- ward Johnson, and John Greene used in relation to the indigenous people. Aberjona Pond was a swampy section of the river to the west of the railroad below Swanton Street which disappeared in 1968 when the river was channeled into three culverts now lying under Ciarcia Field (aka Skillings Field). ADAMS SCHOOL Named for John Quincy Adam, this former schoolhouse was built in 1857 on Swanton Street near Wash- ington Street and was replaced in 1876 by the Chapin School. AIGREMONT The name used by Oren and Rena Sanborn for their house on High Street. See also Sanborn House. AMBROSE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The current Ambrose School was built on the site of the first Ambrose School which was built during the late 1940s as the Marycliff Academy, a Catholic girls’ school. After purchasing the site in 1969, the Town turned it into a public elementary school and named it for former Town Engineer Howard Ambrose (1909- 1970). Ambrose, a Winchester native, had worked for the town since 1931 as a member of the engineer- ing staff, as assistant town engineer (1950), Planning Board Engineer (1956), and town engineer (1967). Spring 1971 Town Meeting approved the name, and the dedication ceremony was held the next January. ANDREWS HILL Now known as Mount Pisgah, this hill (like Andrews Road) was named for Hiram Andrews, a farmer who owned much of the land in the area in the early 19th century.

We have had a busy summer at the club taking care of the needs of the summer program, MetroWest and preparing for the very fast approaching winter session. In recognition of his long service to The Skating Club of Boston, the Board has elected Benjamin Wright, Chairman of the Board as permitted by Article V, par 1. Ben has served the club well for many years and continues to fully participate in Board Meetings and as an advisor on many events that provide history and substance relating to the tradition of The Skating Club of Boston. Congratulations, Ben. Since Jim McManus has been elected Vice President, there was a need to fill his posi- tion on the Board for the remainder of his term.
