ATHANASIUS OF ALEXANDRIA. ABSTRACT OF THESIS The Festal Letters of Saint Athanasius were composed in response to a decision by the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The Council of Bishops assembled primarily to confront the teachings of Arianism, which had questioned the Nature and Person of Jesus Christ. But another problem that the Council of Nicaea faced related to the celebration of Easter. For some time the Church had become divided about the proper observance not only of Easter itself, but also the Lenten Season and the post-Easter period leading to Pentecost. The Council deputed to the Bishopric of Alexandria the task of computing the correct dates for Easter to ensure unity of theological belief and doxological expression. While the practice of composing pastoral letters had already been established in Alexandria, Athanasius continued to notify the Church concerning Easter by sending Festal Letters throughout his entire period in office. In the first instance, we shall examine the historical background to these Pastoral Epistles. The theme of resurrection is then investigated in relation to three of Athanasius' main works - Contra Gentes, De Incarnatione and Contra Arianos (I - III). The third chapter particularises the concept of resurrection and the manner in which Athanasius perceives it within the Festal Letters themselves. This is complemented by an analysis of the doxological significance of resurrection within worship and especially Eucharistic practice. Chapter Five expresses the main theological realities that formed the foundation of Athanasius' soteriological beliefs. Central to these are the nature of the homoousion and the saving vicarious humanity of Jesus Christ. The sixth chapter concludes appropriately with a study of immortality in relation to body and soul. KENNETH D.F WALKER AUGUST 2000 - 10- CHAPTER I THE HISTORICITY OF THE FESTAL LETTERS LI. General Introduction In his encyclical entitled Mediator Dei, issued towards the end of 1947, Pope Pius XII extolled the virtue, if not the necessity, of rediscovering the theological and doxological foundations which have continually underpinned the doctrine and worship of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. These ecclesiastical corner-stones to her life and faith, as Athanasius sought to remind the Church in the Fourth Century, were Christological in nature and expression and had been set in place by the apostles to express the mind and spirit of the Church as she sought to affirm the redemptive power of God in and through His incarnate Son Jesus Christ. More precisely, when confronted by the problematic teachings of Arianism which sought to emphasise the creaturely side of Christ's nature, the Catholic Church was compelled to affirm the full divinity of Christ and the consubstantial relationship between the Father and the Son. Accordingly, these theological and doxological pointers stand as soteriological foundations for the established truths and doctrinal traditions of orthodoxy. Grounded upon this apostolic tradition the Church was called to express in the fullest way possible her Christocentric belief and worship. These areas of the Church's witness, Athanasius insisted, must remain true to scriptural tradition and reflect the Gospel light of resurrection through the One revelation of God's Nature and Being in and through Jesus Christ the Son who was of one substance with the Father in the unity of the One Spirit. "Assuredly," the 1947 encyclical stated, "it is a wise and most laudable thing to return in spirit and affection to the sources of the sacred liturgy. For research in this field of study, by tracing it back to its origins, contributes valuable assistance toward a more thorough and careful investigation of the significance of feast-days, - 11 - and of the meaning of the texts and sacred ceremonies employed on their occasion." ROGERS [email protected] Freed-Hardeman University, Henderson, TN 38340 The name of Philo of Alexandria occurs more in the writings of Eusebius of Caesarea than in those of any other ancient author. Philo’s name can be located over 20 times in the surviving literary corpus of Eusebius,1 and there is strong ev- idence that Eusebius’ Caesarean library is the very reason Philo’s works exist today.2 In all probability, the core of this library can be traced to the personal col- lection of Origen when he settled in Caesarea in 232 CE.3 Eusebius’ own teacher Pamphilus expanded the library, and took great pains to copy and preserve Ori- gen’s own works. What we have, then, is a literary union between Philo and Origen, Alexandrians within the same exegetical tradition. But we can go further. Ilaria Ramelli has argued that Eusebius’ accounts of Philo and Origen in the Ecclesiastical History are strikingly similar, picking up Robert Grant’s stress on the similarity between Origen and the Philonic Therapeutae.4 Here, I further Ramelli’s work by noting additional similarities in the Eusebian biographical presentations. I also point to the tension Eusebius felt between Philo Christianus and Philo Judaeus, a tension detectible in his presentation of the Therapeutae, a group about whom Philo reported and whom Eusebius considered to be the first Egyptian Christians.5 The result is that Eusebius recognized Philo to be exegeti- cally closer to Christianity, and religiously closer to Judaism.

CROUSE XTENSIVE mscussmN of the problem of the hellenization of Christianity Ebelongs to modern times, particularly to the past four centuries. The question had, indeed, been raised in earlier days, from the time of Justin Martyr on, whenever it seemed necessary to explain parallels, or apparent parallels, between Christian doctrine and the philosophy of the Platonists, or between Christian sacraments and the practices of hellenistic cults. And it was in fact an inevitable question whenever, as in the spiritualist-rigorist tradition, from Montanism to Joachim of Fiore, there was an interest in showing a contrast between the pure religion of Apostolic times and the perversions of Churchly Christianity. One recalls Tertullian's remarks about the influence of Aristotle, the "father of all heresies." But the possibility of systematic and critical discussion of this problem, and the use of the concept of hellenization as a fundamental theme in the explication of the history of dogma, depended upon the circumstances of the Reformation. The rise of humanism, bringing a closer acquaintance with classical antiquity, together with the critical attitude of the Reformers towards the mediaeval theological tradition, and particularly their criticism of the impact of Aristotle in the scholastic age, planted the seed of the theory of hellenization. Never before in the history of the Church had the desire to demonstrate the contrast between primitive Christianity and developed ecclesiastical tradition been so widespread and intense; and all parties in the Reformation, from the Anabaptists and Spirituals to the more conservative Protestants, found in the concept of hellenization a ready weapon in their rebellion against the mediaeval Church.

The recently deceased editor-author has called this volume a sequel to his earlier Evolution and Theology (London, 1931; N. Y., 1932). Part I (pp. 1-216) is especially deserving of this designation. Entitled "Essays on Evo­ lution," it collects fourteen critical reviews or commentaries written by various theologians soon after the appearance of the 1931 volume. To many of these essays is added, in full, the subsequent published exchange between author and critic. The discussion is frequently closed with a summary com­ ment by Dr. Messenger in his present role of editor. Critics who figure in Part I include P. G. M. Rhodes, R. W. Meagher, B. C. Butler, O.S.B., P. J. Flood, J. O. Morgan, Michael Browne, W. H. McClellan, S J., W. J. McGarry, S J., E. F. Sutclifïe, S J., Al. Janssens, J. Bittremieux, A. Brisbois, S.J., J. Gross, and Père Lagrange, O.P. All con­ cede the significance of Evolution and Theology as the first full-length treat­ ment of the subject from the theological and scriptural viewpoint, but not all admit the treatment to have been fair. In particular the essay explores how Scotus’s innovative doctrine of the ‘haecceity’ of Christ’s human nature entailed a self-sufficing conception of the ‘person’, having to do less with the mystery of rationality and ‘communion’, and more to do with a quasi-voluntaristic ‘power’ over oneself. In this light, Scotus’s Christological development is read as suggestively con- tributing to make possible a proto-liberal condition in which ‘agency’ (agere) and ‘right’ (ius) are construed as determinative of what it means to be and act as a person. Taylor suggests that this new devotional attention to the particular human Christ was facilitated by the recently founded mendicant orders, especially the Franciscans and Dominicans, both of whom saw the meekness of God Incarnate reflected in the individual poor among whom the friars lived and ministered.

Levison invited the scholarly community to use his work as “a suitable foundation for discussion of the angelic spirit” in early Christianity.1 A few years later, in his study of angelomorphic chris- tology, Charles A. Gieschen highlighted the need for similar work in the field of early pneumatology.2 The case for angelomorphic pneu- matology has been argued at length with respect to the Book of Reve- lation, the Shepherd of Hermas, and Clement of Alexandria.3 This essay contributes to the discussion by pursuing the occurrence of the “an- gelic spirit” in the writings of Justin Martyr.4 * I am grateful to Fr.
