  • The Last of the Hippies
The Last of the Hippies An Hysterical Romance Penny Rimbaud First published in 1982 as part of the Crass record album Christ: The Album, Penny Rimbaud’s The Last of the Hippies is a fiery anarchist polemic centered on the story of his friend, Phil Russell (aka Wally Hope), who was murdered by the State while incarcerated in a men- tal institution. Wally Hope was a visionary and a freethinker, whose life had a pro- found influence on many in the culture of the UK underground and be- yond. He was an important figure in what may loosely be described as the organization of the Windsor Free Festival from 1972 to 1974, as well providing the impetus for the embryonic Stonehenge Free Festival. Wally was arrested and incarcerated in a mental institution after hav- ing been found in possession of a small amount of LSD. He was later released, and subsequently died. The official verdict was that Russell committed suicide, although Rimbaud uncovered strong evidence that SUBJECT CATEGORY Music-Punk/Subculture-UK he was murdered. Rimbaud’s anger over unanswered questions sur- rounding his friend’s death inspired him in 1977 to form the anarchist PRICE punk band Crass. $12.00 In the space of seven short years, from 1977 to their breakup in 1984, ISBN 978-1-62963-103-5 Crass almost single-handedly breathed life back into the then moribund peace and anarchist movements. The Last of the Hippies fast became PAGE COUNT the seminal text of what was then known as anarcho-punk and which 128 later contributed to the anti-globalization movement.

Signed ……………………………………………………………………………………… 2 Abstract My thesis considers the distinctive characteristics of contemporary artistic production and display in Scotland from the 1960s to the present. The main objective is to make manifest the diversification of global sites of contemporary art away from traditional centres by examining less exposed aspects of art practice in Scotland. My methodology is driven by a set of case studies of artist-run initiatives (ARIs), which provide models of enquiry into alternative methods of production and display of contemporary art and that demonstrate the role of ARIs in producing art scenes, and not merely representing those that already exist.

  • Explore the Neo Naturists
The Neo Naturists 8 July – 28 August 2016 The Neo Naturists are a performance art group founded in 1981 by Christine Introduction Binnie, Jennifer Binnie and Wilma Johnson. The group emerged from a subculture – connected with but not limited to the New Romantic club scene – which developed in London against a backdrop of intense eco- nomic, political and social change. In the aftermath of punk, and at the advent of the rise of Thatcherism, a vigorous creative energy developed in the UK which sat outside of mainstream culture, creating its own network of agents, economies, activities and events. The Neo Naturists were a part of a wide constellation of diverse cultural figures and sometime collaborators, which included BodyMap (David Holah & Stevie Stewart), James Birch, Leigh Bowery, Jill Bruce, Michael Clark, David Dawson, Peter Doig, Simon Foxton, Boy George, Derek Jarman, Princess Julia, Bruce Lacey, Andrew Logan, Marilyn, John Maybury, Maia Norman, Grayson Perry, Psychic TV, Philip Sallon, Test Department, Jill Westwood, Dencil Williams and Cerith Wyn Evans. We used to go to nightclubs and do performances wearing body paint. Sometimes the performance would be the act of painting each other, sometimes we’d have the paint on already. All the people around us were Blitz Kids doing all that post-punk stuff when it was very trendy to be thin, po-faced and have perfect make-up. We could never really manage that. We were always red and shiny and smiling, and a bit too fat. So we did the opposite and painted ourselves, got i Christine Binnie interviewed by messy and had fun.i Suzanne Cotter, 8 June 2009, Michael Clark, Violette Editions, 2011 The group was established organically.

  • Barrett Vol 1.Pdf
Introduction usician, psychedelic explorer, eccentric, cult icon – Roger “Syd” Barrett was many things to many people. Created in conjunction with the Barrett family and The Estate of Roger Barrett, who have provided unprece- dented access to family photographs, artworks, and mem- Mories, Barrett offers an intimate portrait of the Syd known only to his family and closest friends. Previously unseen photographs taken on seaside holidays and other family occasions show us a happy and loving young man, smiling energetically in images that map his early life, from childhood through his teenage years. Along with newly available photos from the album cover shoots for The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (taken by Storm Thorgerson and Mick Rock) they reveal the positive energy of a grinning Syd as he fools about in front of the camera. We are offered a rare glimpse of one who was immensely popular among friends and contemporaries. Also contained within these pages are recently unearthed images of Pink Floyd in which we see Syd practising handstands, making muscle-man poses, and having fun. The other members of Floyd lark about too – a fledgling young band enjoying itself with a sense of real camaraderie. The images transport one back in time to 166–67: the London Free School gigs, the launch of International Times at the Roundhouse, the UFO club, the band’s first European dates. There are photos of Syd and Floyd at numerous locations and events, giving a real sense of what it must have been like to be there as the infant light shows, experimentation, and collective spirit of the time emerged, grew, and flourished in the psychedelic hothouse that was the late 160s.

On the third of September 1975, Phil Russell, alias Phil Hope, alias Wally Hope, alias Wally, choked to death on his own vomit; blackberry, custard, bile, lodged finally and tragically in the windpipe. Blackberry, custard, bile, running fromhis gaping mouth onto the delicate patterns of the ornamental carpet. He died a frightened, weak and tired man; six months earlier he had been de- termine, happy and exceptionally healthy; it had taken only that, short time for Her Majesty’s Government’s Heath Department to reduce Phil to a puke covered corpse. ‘The first dream that I remember is of myself holding the handofan older man, looking over a beautiful and peaceful valley — suddenly a fox broke cover followed by hounds and strong horses ridden by red- coated huntsmen. The man pointed into the valley and said, “That,my son, is where you’re heading.” I soon found that out, I am the fox!’ Phil Russell, 1974. Phil’s death marked, for us, the end of an era. Along with him died the last grain of trust that we, naively, had had in the ‘system’, the last seeds of hope that, if we lived a decent life based on respect rather than abuse, our example might be followed by those in authority.
