Canadian eview V olume 42, No. 4 Right to BaRe Arms Dress Guidelines in British Columbia’s Legislative Assembly p. 6 2 CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARY REVIEW/SUMMER 2019 There are many examples of family members sitting in parliaments at the same time. However, the first father-daughter team to sit together in a legislative assembly did not happen in Canada until 1996. That is when Sue Edelman was elected to the 29th Yukon Legislative Assembly, joining her re-elected father, Ivan John “Jack” Cable. Mr. Cable moved to the North in 1970 after obtaining degrees in Chemical Engineering, a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws in Ontario. He practiced law in Whitehorse for 21 years, and went on to serve as President of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, President of the Yukon Energy Corporation and Director of the Northern Canada Power Commission. He is also a founding member of the Recycle Organics Together Society and the Boreal Alternate Energy Centre. Mr. Cable’s entry into electoral politics came in 1992, when he successfully won the riding of Riverdale in East Whitehorse to take his seat in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. Ms. Edelman’s political presence had already been established by the time her father began his term as an MLA. In 1988, she became a Whitehorse city councillor, a position she held until 1994. In her 1991 reelection, she received more votes for her council seat than mayor Bill Weigand received. Following her time on city council, she was elected to the Selkirk Elementary School council. In the 1996 territorial election, she ran and won in the Riverdale South riding. -

OOTD April 2018
Orders of the Day The Publication of the Association of Former MLAs of British Columbia Volume 24, Number 3 April 2018 Social change advocate moves into Gov. House BCHappy has a new Lieutenant Governor Holidays, Janet Austin. Austin is a remarkable community leader and advocate for social change. She has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Metro Vancouver YWCA, a position she has held since 2003. She follows Judith Guichon into Government House to take on what has been, until last year, a largely ceremonial five-year appointment. Guichon made headlines last June when she asked the NDP’s John Horgan to form government after no single party had won a majority. The announcement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came March 20 as Governor General Julie Payette paid her first official visit to British Columbia. She was welcomed to Government House by Guichon. It would be Her Honour’s final bow. Incoming Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin Payette signed the guest book at Government House, leaving a sticker of her new coat of arms, which features a white wing to symbolize exploration, liberty and safety. Payette, a former astronaut, was the second Canadian woman to go into space and the first Canadian on board the International Space Station. The Prime Minister and Premier John Horgan thanked the outgoing Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon for her numerous contributions and her work to engage communities, non-profit organizations, and businesses across the province since taking office in 2012. Premier John Horgan and retiring Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon greet continued on Page 4 Governor General Julie Payette on her first official visit to BC. -

The awards, which have been given annually since 2011, are sponsored by the Lt. Gov’s office and administered by the Manitoba Historical Society on the basis of nominations from the public. The award process consists of a nomination filed on behalf of the nominee by a disinterested person, preferably without the knowledge of the nominee (not possible in this case as Bernie was instrumental in gathering the necessary document support for the nomination). This is an opportunity to hear from the conductor and the guest artists, and learn interesting details about the concert you are about to hear. I can also recommend the Dinner & Symphony series. Five concerts in the year were selected for this program. For example, there will be a Dinner & Symphony program attached to the February 13th Barbara Streisand Songbook concert. -
