Writing these few ‘Thoughts’ as we approach the end of our Church year it’s an August early opportunity to simultaneously reflect on the past year and forward with hope 14th Bere Regis Wildlife Watch River Beasties in Bere Stream for New Year to come. So what sort of year have you had? – Hopefully a joyful and fulfilled one, with personal or family celebrations; perhaps a sad one with illness or the loss of a loved one. It is again likely to be a challenging one with economic uncertainty and what sort of year is to come? Of course we can’t know for certain but we do know about some things that will be happening – a General Election before the middle of the year with no doubt many new policies whichever political party wins and the several weeks of intense coverage of the football World Cup from South Africa. Advent is about coming – our preparation for the coming of God into our world as the baby Jesus and at the same time God incarnate. And it seems to me that this
96 Church website: www.bereregiswith1 affpuddle.org.uk December 2009 December 2009 is a good time to note that at the very beginning of the Church’s New Year in early December is a meeting in Copenhagen in Denmark that will have consequences DATES FOR for every one of us. It has the shorthand title of the ‘Climate Change Conference’, and like Advent we need to be ready, to be prepared for ‘change’ . YOUR DIARY Not so long ago some of the most powerful yet polluting countries in the world refused to acknowledge that the surface of our world was warming up to the extent that our climate was changing and that many people in the world would suffer from drought and starvation which would lead to the death and suffering of millions of people with unremitting political unrest and consequential collapse of December civil society as we know it. This may seem alarmist but I know from personal 1st Gardening Club 100 Years of Dorset Weather 7.30 p.m. experience that the crisis and of Darfur, in Sudan, is arguably, in part, the result of climate change war. OBITUARIES
One of Bert’s great loves was the Dorchester football team, the Magpies and he was a life long supporter. Bert had by now also started working for Bedford and Jestys but alas was made redundant and he went to work for Alan Foote at Haywards Farm on Roke Road, helping Alan with general farming duties. And he and brother Jack moved from Shitterton to Roke where Bert established his garden. And since I’ve been in the Parish I always admired Bert’s amazing flowers and as I later learnt vegetables as I drove past. Bert suffered some problems with his eyes and he lost the use of one in an accident and he also developed glaucoma so in time he was unable to drive. Unlike his brother Jack he hated motorbikes and only ever made one trip on his brother’s bike he preferred four wheels. Bert loved his radio and football commentary – as his eyesight prevented Television being of any use. Indeed in hospital recently he had his radio with him. Bert had a good sense of humour, and he could read Jack like a book. He did all the housework and the paper work. Bert very occasionally might show a little irritation: on one occasion when tractor driving, there was a new foremen who tried to tell Bert how to do something that he had been doing for more than 30 years Bert said to him ‘there’s the tractor – do it yourself. Bert was a skilled tractor driver – and won ploughing competitions. When young Len married, Bert and his elder brother Jack were even more inseparable, indeed the only time they were apart was when Jack was serving for five years in the Royal Navy in World War ll – they were together for more than 80 years. For me, Bert was truly and inspiration – not of course in a loud or flashy way – but a man seemingly so contented with life – and always grateful for God’s blessings. Bert was clear and certain that he wanted to be ‘in the arms of Jesus’ and I’m certain he is. Bert, we shall miss you, your gentleness and your contentedness; and we are all so much richer for having known you.

86 Church website: www.bereregiswith11 affpuddle.org.uk December 2009 December 2009 OUR CHURCH
This month, our church will ring with familiar and much loved Christmas carols. Music is such an important part of our worship and when I sing a hymn or carol that people have been singing in this very building for hundreds of years, I always imagine the carved apostles looking down from the Mediaeval roof and smiling. I am sure they have their favourites, like all of us, and I have a feeling they like the modern ones, too! Tim Colquhoun, our organist for the last 10 years has retired from the regular commitment of playing every Sunday (he assures us that he will still come and play for us now and then). We are very grateful to him for all he has done for us – ‘thank you, Tim’. This month, we welcome our two new ‘job share’ organists. Tony Fox, from Milborne St. Andrew will be playing for most of our morning services and Diane Hofdahl Fysh, who lives just across the road from our Church, will be playing for Evensongs. Diane has taken over training the choir and we are all looking forward to the Carol Service on the 20 th December. We hope we have chosen your favourite carols and there will be an opportunity for children to sing, too, so please come along and join us – it is a wonderful start to Christmas. If anyone is interested in joining the choir or if any children would like to come along and practice the carols, please give Diane a ring (471314). Don’t forget to look for this month’s ‘mystery object’ in the Church. Last month we had our Memorial Book. It is in the alcove next to the ‘children’s area’. This time I looked for depiction of the Nativity. Just look at this wonderful carved reredos …. Sarah Welton, Church Warden
BERE REGIS CLOCK
The Church Clock is currently keeping very good time. It has a gaining rate of 1.875 seconds per day. Putting this another way, each day it is running 1.875 seconds fast. On Remembrance Sunday I generally adjust the clock so that the first strike of eleven o'clock is at exactly the right time. BRIANTSPUDDLE FILM NIGHTS
On Thursday 10 th December at 7.30pm we will be screening the ultimate feel good festive offering from 1946 “ It’s a Wonderful Life” . The film has been recognised by the America Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made and is placed number one on their list of the most inspirational American films of all time. James Stewart stars as George Bailey, a role that won him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. The film was also nominated in another 4 categories including Best Film. At the start of the film we encounter George Bailey looking down at the river from a bridge in Bedford Falls on Christmas Eve, he is contemplating suicide. What ensues from this unpromising start is a heart warming tale that has become a Christmas staple for every age. Much of the film is told through flashbacks spanning George’s entire life. We see the lives that George has touched and the difference that he has made to those people and the life of his community. The film is also credited with the innovation of using a soapy liquid based artificial snowflakes, versus the old method of painting cornflakes being blow by a wind fan. Ouch! The film will be shown in the Village Hall at 7.30pm and a bar will be available before the film. Tickets costing £4 will be available from 1 December from Philippa Thorniley on 01929 471497 and on the door on the night. The cost of your ticket will include mince pies and the bar will also be selling mulled wine to get us into the festive spirit. The film has a U certification.

Purbeck Housing Trust Paul Derrien, the Housing Operations Manager for Purbeck Housing Trust, attended the meeting and explained PHT’s responsibilities. He outlined PHT’s plans for estate management in and around Bere Regis and answered questions from members of the public. Monthly Joint Surgery A Parish Councillor will be joining Peter Wharf our District Councillor at the regular surgery he holds, which is always held at Turbeville Court on the first Saturday of each month from 09.30 to 10.00 am. THE CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL
Light in a dark place! Yes, it’s that time of year once again to forage among the suitcases and boxes in the loft and bring out the Christmas decorations! No doubt many of our homes will be lit up with flying reindeer on the roofs, Santa’s chuckling out their ‘ho, ho ho’s’, whilst snowmen beam out their friendly smiles across frosty lawns. Shops will be moving into overdrive to dispense their Christmas wares in an attempt to prove that our fair country is finally moving out of recession! But not too many of our houses and shops will be using the Biblical story of the nativity to celebrate the season. Indeed for many areas, thankfully not too many in Dorset, Jesus has become a ‘no go’ area at this time of year and Christmas itself is in the process of being rebranded and replaced by the politically correct but rather bland Winter Festival label. It was refreshing recently on a stopover at Singapore to witness the shopping decorations going up and one particular departmental store (see photo) Tangs unashamedly declaring those words of Jesus when He said , “ I am the Light of the World” . We may try to rebrand the Christmas story but no one can change the fact that just over two thousand years ago God visited this planet through His Son to rescue us from our spiritual darkness. The Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote almost eight hundred years before Jesus was born, “The people walking in

DRAX HALL The Table Top Sale, organised by Sally Cheeseman, was a great success and raised a useful sum towards the upkeep of the Hall. This was followed on the same day by a Planning performance from Artsreach. Tim Laycock accompanied DRAX by Colin Thompson and Sonia Ritter gave a memorable performance entitled ‘Ha.Ha.Hardy’ which consisted of a HALL favourite selection of humorous and curious prose and a new poetry from the works of Thomas Hardy. There were interludes of typical Dorset tunes from the Hardy Family Music books. December sees the Hall very busy with the Drax Hall Christmas Bingo on Monday kitchen or 7th December. PURBECK DISTRICT COU NCIL REPORT
Visit to Purbeck District Council I invited our Parish Council Chair, Ian Ventham, to visit Purbeck District Council’s offices in Wareham to meet the Chief Executive and his General Managers to discuss issues relating to our area. Ian found the meeting very helpful and we will be following up on a variety of issues over the next few months.
Affpuddle and Turnerspuddle parishes Purbeck District Council has agreed final proposals for public consultation on the creation of a single Parish of Affpuddle and Turnerspuddle. This has been instituted at the request of both existing Parish Councils; by creating a single parish of Affpuddle and Turnerspuddle, residents will be able to elect 9 parish councillors for the whole of the area. Although Turnerspuddle currently has 2 parish councillors and Affpuddle has 7, the 2 parishes have actually worked together since 1954 for the benefit of both communities so the current proposals merely formalise that arrangement. The proposals will now go out for consultation and the District Council invites electors for the Parishes of Affpuddle and Turnerspuddle, and bodies with an interest in the governance of these parishes, to make their comments known. Any such comments should be submitted in writing to the General Manager, Central Services, Purbeck District Council, Westport House, Worgret Road, Wareham BH20 4PP by 18th December 2009. Any comments received will be taken into account before the Council brings the statutory order into force. Further information about the review can be obtained from Peter Aston, Principal Democratic Services Officer at Purbeck District Council on 01929 557221,or by emailing peteraston@purbeck dc.gov.uk.
General Election Dates The last possible election date is 3rd June 2010 but it could be combined with the District Council elections on 6 th May 2010 and could be at just 3 weeks notice (i.e. announced as late as 15 th April 2010). Alternatively some commentators are now suggesting that it could be announced on March 4 th 2010 and held on Thursday March 25 th 2010. The more cynical commentators pointing out that the election would be held before any budget was required to be introduced. Whatever date and whatever your political persuasion I urge everyone to exercise their right to

Children are already making good use of the new waterproof dungarees we bought with some of the fundraising money from the dog show. Children can literally sit in the mud without fear of getting their clothes dirty, building with large construction such as crates and planks, collecting rain water, investigating how to get water from a to b using different lengths of guttering, exploring capacity by counting rain drops into different sized buckets, balancing on a plank placed over a log, the list is endless. All the time developing their large muscles, balance and co ordination. Staff are having just as much fun being outside and supporting and extending children’s active learning. Of course not all of these resources cost money, we have had some logs donated for seats, plus a log pile for our very own insect hotel so that children can continue a favourite pastime of mini beast hunting. When clearing out your shed or house please bear us in mind if you have any of the items below that would be suitable for children to play with ie not sharp, too heavy or having previously contained chemicals. We need baking tins, metal serving utensils, whisks or saucepans, mini garden forks and spades, pulleys, rope, an old baby bath etc. Please give us a ring to see if we may be able to make use of them.

A good number of us met on 10 th Nov. for the Thank you so much for the donation of £23 raised by donations for tea and first meeting of our 2009/2010 programme. This coffee from patients attending the doctor’s surgery for their flu jabs recently, this was an illustrated talk by Tony Bates on our money will go towards buying plants and seeds for children to grow in our raised “Living Landscape”. We heard how Nature beds next Spring. Reserves do a great job in providing habitat for threatened species but, to enable these species to spread, we need “wildlife corridors” Debbie Greatorex, Manager, Ragamuffins enabling movement through urban areas and cultivated farmland. This should be an important consideration in all planning decisions. We then moved on to look more closely at the “living landscape” of our own parish, travelling from the chalk downland in the north, along Bere Stream and on to heathland in the south. It is this variety of habitat which gives us such a diversity of wildlife. On our journey through the Parish we stopped to look at some of the sites designated as being of special importance nationally, and, in the case of Black Hill, of European significance. Finally, we were reminded that some of the most important “wildlife corridors” were our own gardens, and we can all do our bit to preserve and enhance the wildlife interest of our own patch. At the meeting we distributed copies of the programme we have planned for the coming months. (see overleaf) Following our very enjoyable trip to Kimmeridge earlier this year, we have included two trips outside the Parish . The visit to Fontmell is planned for the best possible time for butterflies so we hope the butterflies realise this! N.B. All our events are open to everyone, and we hope that many of you will come along and join in.
