Abstract This dissertation analyzes gendered death animations in video games and the way games thematize death to remarginalize marked characters, including women. This project combines Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s work on the human subjection to death and Georges Bataille’s characterization of sacrifice to explore how death in games stages markedness. Markedness articulates how a culture treats normative identities as unproblematic while marking non-normative identities as deviant. Chapter One characterizes play as a form of death-deferral, which culminates in the spectacle of player-character death. I argue that death in games can facilitate what Hegel calls tarrying with death, embracing our subjection to mortality.

  • Winning and Losing in the Hall of Mirrors
Winning and Losing in the Hall of Mirrors A study into the structural psychoanalytic interfaces arising during the video game situation A thesis submitted for the award of PhD Psychology Vanessa Abigail Long School of Social Sciences Brunel University June 2013 Abstract Who are we? Why do we do the things we do? These questions are constantly under scrutiny, forever unable to provide us with adequate answers, it seems. Yet, with the continuing rise in popularity of digital media, we are able to situate these questions in a different sphere and see aspects of the self that we were unable to perceive before. Digital media forms have provided us with the capacity to explore whole new worlds, as well as allowing for new and innovative methods of communication. These changes make a huge impact on the daily lives of individuals. This thesis presents a theoretical contribution to both psychoanalytic thinking and to the rapidly expanding field of games studies, with especial reference to avatar-based games. It considers the status of the bond formed between the individual at play (known here as the ‘user’) and the game itself. Furthermore, it presents this as a model which identifies the user’s relation to the game dynamic through an understanding of the key components of a video game, including aspects such as the control mechanism. Elements which cross the boundary between the user/game realities are also considered with relation to hyperreality, thus forming a more complete imagining of this framework. This also allows for an application of this dynamic to what we define as violent (and associated) acts within games.

  • You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

  • Demystifying the Structures of Ludic Textuality
DEMYSTIFYING THE STRUCTURES OF LUDIC TEXTUALITY: NARRATIVE, RHETORIC, AND GENRE IN HYPERERGODIC COMPOSITION by JOHANSEN QUIJANO Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON May 2015 Copyright © by Johansen Quijano 2015 All Rights Reserved ii Acknowledgements I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. James Warren, whose feedback and conversation provided invaluable aid in the construction of the arguments made in this study. His insightful commentary and observations helped me shape and polish my study into its current form. I would also like to thank my other committee members, Dr. Tim Morris and Dr. Yuejiao Zhang, whose support and advice during my doctoral studies proved to be as irreplaceable as our conversations regarding the narrative configurations of ergodic textuality and the grammar of visual compositions. Finally, I would like to give special thanks to my family, especially my wife and son, without whose love and support I would not have been able to complete my studies. April 20, 2015 iii Abstract DEMYSTIFYING THE STRUCTURE OF LUDIC TEXTUALITY: NARRATIVE, RHETORIC, AND GENRE IN HYPERERGODIC COMPOSITION Johansen Quijano, PhD The University of Texas at Arlington, 2015 Supervising Professor: James Warren In an increasingly remediated world, it has become an increasingly relevant necessity not only to understand how immersive participatory experiences convey messages, but also to be able to convey to students the knowledge of how these contemporary systems might attempt persuasion. However, contemporary discourse surrounding the discussion of ergodic and ludic textuality often relies on one of many arguably underdeveloped theoretical frameworks.
