One of Brenda’s MFA candidates at the Savannah College of Art and Design, game de- signer David McDonough, was offered the opportunity to assist in the development of the non-digital shorts that complete each chapter, and he jumped at the chance. Another of Brenda’s MFA candidates, artist Blair Cooper, was asked to design the book’s cover. Like- wise, he was pleased to assist. For both their contributions, we are grateful. Thanks are due also to members of the Design Army, and in particular SCAD gradu- ates Michelle Menard (MFA, 2008) and Chris Schmidt (BFA, 2008), who read drafts of this book and made games from its challenges, a number of which are pictured within. Professional game designers Jeb Havens, Ian Bogost, and Clint Hocking were kind enough to contribute material, and countless other designers, including Greg Costikyan, Sheri Graner Ray, Sam Lewis, Chris Crowell, and Linda Currie, listened to us talk about games obscure and new and added to the proverbial conversation. Lastly, but most importantly, our spouses deserve much praise. Sharon Schreiber and Ian Brathwaite listened to keyboards click away for many a good evening while their game designer spouses got all excited about things that the average person would probably dis- miss (or at the very least not find nearly as exciting). Fortunately, they also got to play a lot of good games. About the Authors As a 26-year veteran of the video games industry, Brenda Brathwaite is a game designer and Chair of the Interactive Design and Game Development department at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She has worked on 22 internationally known titles, including the award-winning Wizardry series of role-playing games and the award-winning Jagged Alliance series of strategy role-playing games. Brenda serves on the board of the Interna- tional Game Developers Association and is a passionate anti-censorship advocate. She is a regular speaker at universities and conferences, and according to a 2007 article in Next Generation magazine written by Ernest Adams, Brathwaite is the longest, continuously serving woman in video game development today. She is the author of Sex in Video Games. Ian Schreiber has been in the industry for eight years, first as a programmer and then as a game designer. He has worked on five published game titles, including Playboy: the Mansion and the Nintendo DS version of Marvel Trading Card Game. He has also developed training/simulation games for two Fortune 500 companies. Ian has taught game design and development courses at Ohio University, Columbus State Community College, and Savan- nah College of Art and Design, and has mentored college students at those and several other universities. • Casual Resistance: a Longitudinal Case Study of Video Gaming's Gendered
Running Head: CASUAL RESISTANCE Casual resistance: A longitudinal case study of video gaming’s gendered construction and related audience perceptions Amanda C. Cote This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Oxford Academic in Journal of Communication on August 4, 2020, available online: https://doi.org/10.1093/joc/jqaa028 . Abstract: Many media are associated with masculinity or femininity and male or female audiences, which links them to broader power structures around gender. Media scholars thus must understand how gendered constructions develop and change, and what they mean for audiences. This article addresses these questions through longitudinal, in-depth interviews with female video gamers (2012-2018), conducted as the rise of casual video games potentially started redefining gaming’s historical masculinization. Analysis shows that participants have negotiated relationships with casualness. While many celebrate casual games’ potential for welcoming new audiences, others resist casual’s influence to safeguard their self-identification as gamers. These results highlight how a medium’s gendered construction may not be salient to consumers, who carefully navigate divides between their own and industrially-designed identities, but can simultaneously reaffirm existing power structures. Further, how participants’ views change over time emphasizes communication’s ongoing need for longitudinal audience studies that address questions of media, identity, and inclusion. Keywords: Video games, gender, game studies, feminist media studies, hegemony, casual games, in-depth interviews, longitudinal audience studies CASUAL RESISTANCE 2 Casual resistance: A longitudinal case study of video gaming’s gendered construction and related audience perceptions From comic books to soap operas, many media are gendered, associated with masculinity or femininity and with male or female audiences.

  • The Decline of Mmos
The Decline of MMOs Prof. Richard A. Bartle University of Essex United Kingdom May 2013 Abstract Ten years ago, massively-multiplayer online role-playing games (MMOs) had a bright and exciting future. Today, their prospects do not look so glorious. In an effort to attract ever-more players, their gameplay has gradually been diluted and their core audience has deserted them. Now that even their sources of new casual players are drying up, MMOs face a slow and steady decline. Their problems are easy to enumerate: they cost too much to make; too many of them play the exact same way; new revenue models put off key groups of players; they lack immersion; they lack wit and personality; players have been trained to want experiences that they don’t actually want; designers are forbidden from experimenting. The solutions to these problems are less easy to state. Can anything be done to prevent MMOs from fading away? Well, yes it can. The question is, will the patient take the medicine? Introduction From their lofty position as representing the future of videogames, MMOs have fallen hard. Whereas once they were innovative and compelling, now they are repetitive and take-it-or-leave-it. Although they remain profitable at the moment, we know (from the way that the casual games market fragmented when it matured) that this is not sustainable in the long term: players will either leave for other types of game or focus on particular mechanics that have limited appeal or that can be abstracted out as stand-alone games (or even apps).

  • Spilling Hot Coffee? Grand Theft Auto As Contested Cultural Product
Aphra Kerr/IGTA book/2006 Spilling Hot Coffee? Grand Theft Auto as contested cultural product Dr. Aphra Kerr National University of Ireland Maynooth, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland. [email protected] Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games are highly successful, in terms of sales, and their content is part of an explicit business strategy which aims to exploit the latest technologies and platforms to develop content aimed at adult game players in certain markets. By all accounts this has been a highly successful strategy with the GTA franchise selling more than 30 million units across platforms by 2004, even before Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA SA) was launched in late 2004 (Take Two Interactive 2004). The latter was the top selling console game in the USA and in the top ten in the UK in 2005. At the same time the GTA series are arguably the most maligned of game products in many markets attracting much negative commentary and numerous legal actions in the USA. This chapter argues that the GTA case demonstrates a key tension within the cultural industries between the need to maximise sales globally and the need to conform to, or be seen to conform to, local distribution, social and moral systems. At the same time the story demonstrates that despite the widespread rhetoric of free trade and the dismantling of state sanctioned censorship systems in the USA, most parts of Europe and Australia, the censorship of cultural products continues and is perhaps a less overt, but nonetheless, highly political, socially negotiated and nationally specific process. GTA games are produced by a network of companies in the UK and in the USA.
