  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

  • Imagine Dragons Discography Torrent
Imagine dragons discography torrent Continue Imagine Dragons is a rock band formed in 2008 by Dan Reynolds, their current vocalist. But it wasn't until 2012 that the band received recognition for their album Night Visions, their debut studio album. Their single Radioactive from the aforementioned album was named Rolling Stone magazine's biggest rock hit of 2013 and the band as a revelation of 2013. Undoubtedly, the main musical feature of Imagine Dragons is the combination of sounds that are in his music, because it can feel the dissolution of different genres that play in the song. An example of this is the aforementioned Radioactive, which mixes rock and dubstep rhythms. After signing with Richard Branson's record company Virgin Records, 30 seconds to Mars released their first album, which bore the same name as the band, and managed to sell more than 121,000 copies in the United States alone. On their second album, A Beautiful Life, the band was well received; but it was the singles that resulted from this, the band found great success.

  • Imagine Dragons “
Amanda Molitor ’14: Imagine Dragons, following up on their extremly well received performance at Made in America last summer, returned to the Philadelphia area on March 7th to play a sold out show at the Camden’s Susquehanna Bank Center as part of their US tour in support of their debut album, Night Visions. This alternative pop/rock quartet hailing from Las Vegas formed five years ago and has achieved extreme mainstream success in the past year, during which it has become a Grammy award-winning band which can boast a platinum debut album and three Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping hits: “It’s Time,” “Demons,” and “Radioactive.” These songs play incessantly on almost every radio station; people cannot seem to resist singing along to the catchy (if not cliché) lyrics. The representation of every demographic in the Camden audience is a testament to Imagine Dragons’ popularity with almost all age groups: teenagers, adults, and families with small children filled every seat. This mass appeal can be attributed to the band’s PG-rated lyrics and bouncy rhythms combined with the universally appreciated rock influence and infectious drum beats. The show was not in want of any percussion due to the numerous drums of every size strewn on stage and played by various band members at different times. This is an Imagine Dragons trademark and added an additional layer of originality to the typical rock concert. After Nico Vega and The Naked and Famous opened the show, Imagine Dragons began their 90-minute set with such crowd-pleasers as “Fallen,” “Tiptoe,” “Hear Me,” but the audience immediately showed a powerful response to the distinct handclaps and mandolin riffs of Imagine Dragons’ first single, “It’s Time.” This was followed by “Amsterdam,” featuring a solo by guitarist Wayne “Wing” Sermon.

I’ve tried to cut these corners Try to take the easy way out I kept on falling short of something I coulda gave up then but Then again I couldn’t have ’cause I’ve traveled all this way for something I take it in but don’t look down ‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay I’m on top of the world, ‘ay Waiting on this for a while now Paying my dues to the dirt I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay Take you with me if I can Been dreaming of this since a child I’m on top of the world.

It’s Time 1 Photograph by Colin Young-Wolff IMAGINE DRAGONS: LIVE FROM THE ARTISTS DEN The historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles hosted a performance by this year's biggest break- out rock band, Imagine Dragons, for an explosive episode of Live from the Artists Den. Powered by the intense and athletic stage presence of lead singer Dan Reynolds, the Las Vegas-based band tore through a set full of its dance-inflected, percussion-heavy rock anthems, including the smash singles "It's Time" and "Radioactive." ARTIST BIO Imagine Dragons formed after lead singer Dan Reynolds and guitarist Wayne “Wing” Sermon met in Provo, Utah in 2008. Bassist Ben McKee and drummer Dan Platzman joined shortly thereafter, and the band moved to Reynold’s native Las Vegas, where it recorded and released three EPs – Imagine Dragons, Hell and Silence, and It’s Time – before signing to Interscope Records in 2011. The band’s major label debut, an EP titled Continued Silence, was released in early 2012, and included the band's first Top 40 single, "It's Time." The band's first full-length album, Night Visions followed later that year. The album topped the Billboard Alternative and Rock charts, prompting Billboard to list Imagine Dragons as one of “2012’s Brightest New Stars” and Amazon.com to call the band its “Favorite Rock Artist of 2012.” The hit single, “Radioactive,” shot into the top ten of the Billboard 100 and was dubbed “the biggest rock hit of the year” by Rolling Stone.
