100 Years of Olympic Films, 1912-2012 Released by The International Olympic Committee and The Criterion Collection, 2017 by Cynthia Close Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia made for the 1936 Olympiad held in Berlin is the first film that comes to mind when the topic of Olympic films is mentioned. For many of us, even for those most devout followers of Olympic competition throughout the years, Riefenstahl may be the only filmmaker we can name connected to what is arguably the longest running global event representing human athletic achievement. Even what we think we know about Olympia is only a fraction of that history. But thanks to the painstaking research that began with a conversation in 1996 at a bar in the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan between archivist Adrian Wood and Stewart Binns, head of the Olympic Television Archive Bureau (OTAB), we now have this magnificent Criterion Collection, 100 years of Olympic Films, 1912 - 2012 to study and savor. The instigator and driver behind this gargantuan undertaking was Michael Payne, director of marketing for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who in turn convinced IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch to allocate the resources to fund this project. It took a giant leap of faith since back in 1996 it was not known how many films were made or how many had survived since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Although no cameras were present at those games, it was a precipitous launch for both the Olympics and the birth of film by the Lumières who showed their first films in Paris the year before and the following year the Edison Vitascope projector was presented to the public in the United States. -

ÉDITO LE FESTIVAL DE TOUS LES CINÉMAS our sa 47e édition, le festival évolue tout en étant fidèle à son identité visuelle très identifiée, grâce aux magnifiques affiches peintes depuis 1991 par Stanislas Bouvier, qui s’est inspiré cette année de Little Big Man. Le festival change de nom. En substituant « Cinéma » à « film », le PFestival La Rochelle Cinéma (FEMA) réaffirme sa singularité et va à l’essentiel. Au-delà du 7e art, le mot cinéma désigne aussi la salle de projection, que nous fréquentons assidûment et que nous nous devons de défendre et de réinventer pour qu’elle demeure le lieu de (re)découverte des films. L’actualité de ces derniers mois nous a prouvé qu’il existe un besoin de se ras- sembler, d’échanger. Quoi de mieux qu’un festival pour se rencontrer ? Quoi de mieux que le cinéma pour déchiffrer l’état du monde ? Les films comme de multiples points de vue sur notre humanité. À commencer par notre film d’ouverture, It Must Be Heaven, dont le titre, quand nous connais- sons l’univers d’Elia Suleiman, paraît bien ironique. Il s’y met en scène avec son dito regard étonné et souvent amusé, dans un monde dévoré par la violence. La force É de son cinéma tient à la composition de ces plans séquences, qui font d’un détail —— tout un symbole. Quand il pose sa caméra place des Victoires à Paris, en direction de la Banque de France devant laquelle défilent lentement des chars de combat, tout est dit. But for me it is the city of my childhood. The city of a thousand threads. The city of the silent crowds. The city with no faces. The city of no dreams. The city of a million hidden people. The city with the greatest solitude. The city of prosperity— Mai Zetterling delivers these lines, her personal thoughts about the city of Stockholm, in a voice-over accompanying an early scene in the short film Mai Zetterling’s Stockholm (Mai Zetterling, 1978), in which we see the Swedish director and actor in a crane, travelling up, high above a wintery view of the Kungsträdgården park in central Stockholm. The year is 1977. A Canadian production company has invited her to contribute an episode to the TV series Cities.1 Melancholic and ironic by turns, Zetterling paints a portrait of her hometown, a city where she has not resided permanently for the last thirty years and where she obviously does not feel at home. The film’s working title was ‘The Native Squatter’.2 Impersonating not only herself, ‘author, actress, filmmaker Mai Zetterling’, as she introduces herself, but also ‘author, alchemist August Strindberg’ and ‘author, philosopher, run-away-queen Christina’, Zetterling gives 159 women, film and agency in the 1970s and 1980s the viewer a tour of places such as Sweden’s state-governed chain of alcohol shops, Systembolaget, major tourist attractions such as the open-air museum Skansen, the medieval city centre, and the Royal Dramatic Theatre that she herself in 1942 had entered as a young acting student, soon to become movie star. -

DOSSIER Louise Van Brabant Olympisme et cinéma : un terrain de jeu comme un autre C’est en 1936 que les Jeux olympiques sont, pour la pre- mière fois, diffusés à la télévision locale. Depuis lors, de nom- breux réalisateurs se sont succédé pour retracer ces manifes- tations populaires dans des films de genres et desseins variés, plus ou moins politiques, plus ou moins esthétiques, rarement mémorables. Grands noms et anonymes se croisent au sein de ce thème étrangement fécond : il s’agit là d’un corpus d’une pe- tite centaine de films pour les Jeux olympiques d’été et d’hiver confondus. L’ancestrale rivalité entre télévision et cinéma est- elle à l’origine de cet acharnement ? Diffusés en direct à partir des Jeux de Tokyo en 64, ces évènements ont attiré toujours plus de spectateurs, engageant les grandes puissances à tirer parti de cette visibilité pour en faire un terrain idéologique de la Guerre Froide. La fertilité de ce thème peut aussi être attri- buée à l’entrée de ce décor dans les poncifs télévisuels : univers désormais familier, les JO seraient alors perçus comme l’un des bons filons pour obtenir une audience sans trop se fouler. 92 Louise Van Brabant Quelle que soit l’origine de cette tendance, un examen global de l’olympisme au travers du prisme cinématographique n’est cependant pas dépourvu d’intérêt : il permet d’établir un état des lieux du cinéma de grande diffusion, et de ce qu’il a trouvé bon de retenir de ces manifestations (extra) ordinaires. Let me highlight a couple of key events here. From 27 April-3 May, the Academy Film Archive and the UCLA Film and Television Archive hosted a hugely successful FIAF Congress (if the posi- tive feedback received from many colleagues is to be believed), 22 years after the last one in Los Angeles. I would like to take the opportunity of this editorial to express our very warm thanks to our Michael Pogorzelski, Joe Lindner, May Haduong and Dan Faltz (Academy Film Archive) and Jan-Christopher Horak (UCLA Film & Television Archive) for their very hard work over the last year (or more) to ensure that everything ran smoothly and that our 356 registered delegates had the best possible time in Los Angeles. From the FIAF Secretariat’s perspective, it was a pleasure to work with them on the organization of our 73rd Congress. The FIAF community elected a new Executive Committee and has a new President.
