National Scientific Centre “P.I. Prokopovich Beekeeping Institute” is the leading research institution in the beekeeping industry of Ukraine, which provides development and manufacturing application of the results of basic and applied research on breeding, processing technologies, veterinary support, apitherapy, standardization, and use of for pollination of entomophile cultures.

Description of the department/unit/laboratory (up to 500 characters) The main research areas of Laboratory of Technological and Special Measures for Prophylaxis of Bee Diseases are: study of the pathogenesis of the major bee diseases and development of safe methods of prevention and treatment; research in laboratory and natural conditions on the selection of plants with antifungal and antiparasitic effect; manufacturing of experimental samples of plant alcohol extracts and transferring them to the farms to test their effectiveness in relation to diseases of bees in working conditions; providing advice and guidance to beekeeping farms of all forms of ownership.

2) SPECIFIC INTEREST (Call, Topic) and EXPERTISE OFFERED

Relevant topic(s) in the Work Programme (Thematic area, Call, Topic) Societal Challenges: Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research and the bioeconomy CALL: Sustainable food security – resilient and resource-efficient value chains Call identifier: H2020-SFS-2016-2017 Topic: Bee health and sustainable pollination Specific Challenge Topic identifier: SFS-16-2017 Description of the expertise offered related to the topic (up to 1000 characters) We are experts in: • breeding research of Ukrainian bee breeds; • production technology of beekeeping products; • technology of processing of beekeeping products; • development of methods and control of safety and quality of beekeeping products; • standardization and use of bees for pollination of entomophilous crops; • molecular genetics research of bees; • environmentally safe methods for prophylaxis and treatment of bee diseases; • monitoring of stocks of nectar and effective ways of their use; • development of national standards for beekeeping products; • Museum work and history of the beekeeping development. We are used to work with multiple actors (beekeeping farms owners, Universities and Research Centers). Keywords describing the expertise offered related to the topic (up to 10 words) bee; beekeeping product;s molecular genetics; breeding research; safety and quality; standardization; monitoring; pollination Summary The relationship of honey bees with objects of agro- and biocoenoses, formed by the the evolutionary path, recently is modified significantly under pressure from diverse anthropogenic factors, which have comprehensive action and negatively affect, in general, bee health, genome stability and, consequently, their adaptational defense mechanisms, behavior, productivity and quality and safety of received production. In that regard, is relevant the research on the development of integrated activities for threat reduction, ranging from the conduct of continuous monitoring and hazard analysis critical control point, study of their negative impact on bees health, persistence, behavior and ending with the development of national or multinational model of stable development.of beekeeping. Оver the years in National Scientific Centre “Institute of beekeeping named after P.I. Prokopovich” is conducted constant monitoring of pollutants in bio- and agrocoenoses of different regions of Ukraine related to honey plants; condition of themselves and quality and safety of beekeeping products. As one of approaches to minimization of the negative impact of chemical, biological and technological factors on bees health, behavior, and quality of production, were formulated, developed and approved in due course and proposed natural remedies based on the essential oils of plants and probiotics remedies. The use of these products is the basis for the development of environmentally safe technological schemes for prophylaxis of infectious diseases of bees, increase of their resistance and activity and receiving organic production (for example, honey without antibiotics). Over the last five years are carried out activities to establish types of Ukrainian steppe bees(the most common on the territory of Ukraine native species) with improved protective and hygienic behaviour. The use of the method contributed to the development of the sanation capacities by 17.7%, their significant advantage was noted in construction of honeycombs of . Currently exist 200 bee families with queen bees of created type, which is a sufficient number for further research of improvement of Ukrainian steppe bees with a focus on resistance to environmental changes. Along with this, together with “The institute of Animals Breeding and Genetics nd. a. M.V. Zubets of National Academy of Agrarian Science of Ukraine” is thoroughly examined molecular genetics and population characteristic of breeding array of bee families of Ukrainian steppe bees in order to create the methodology of complex evaluation of available gene pool material using morphometric and DNA markers of different classes. The development and association of directions mentioned above will allow to create the model of stable development of beekeeping in Ukraine the result of the implementation of which will be the increase of adaptive and protective mechanisms of Ukrainian steppe bees to conditions of modified environment, their productivity and activity towards entomophilous plants pollination and, as a result, profitability of apiaries and receiving organic production. This national model we are considering as part of overall European. Working on a project with EU partners will help to work out a model of sustainable development of beekeeping wholly in the EU Experience in previous Framework Programmes (participation in projects) (Thematic area, Call, Topic, Project full title & acronym, Role in the project) UP TAP-2 “Development and use of the express method for avian influenza virus diagnostics based on the reverse transcription-loop mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) [Executor].

Experience of cooperation with the industry - incl. SMEs (Programme, Thematic area, Project full title & acronym, Type of cooperation) Contracts with beekeeping farms for: - supply of new hybrids, lines and types of Ukrainian bee breeds; - introduction of developmental work of Institute; - different service delivery
