An Interview with Megan Washington by Megan Spencer Australian Musician Magazine, November 2010
‘Fireflies in a jar’ - an interview with Megan Washington By Megan Spencer Australian Musician Magazine, November 2010. There are those among us whose minds work differently when it comes to storytelling. Rather than sit down and ‘tell a story’, they sit down and and ‘tell a song’. These people are ‘hardwired’ for song. When stories start spinning in their heads and hearts, poetry spills out (not prose) which, coupled with music, become ‘lyrics’. Spontaneously and simultaneously music generates from within their imaginations to accompany each word. Melody and rhythm entwine themselves around phrases, until they fuse to form verses, choruses, repeat; and then become… song. Megan Washington aka ‘Washington’ is one of these enviable ‘right-brained people’, a latter- day songstress or “chanteuse” as she is often referred to, not only in the media but by herself as well. (On Washington’s MySpace under ‘About Me’ you will find, “Chanteuse: noun (literary): a female singer, especially one who sings on the stage in a theatre or bar, where elegant people fall about in frantic and frenzied splendour.”) Since emerging onto the national stage just over 12 months ago, people have been swooning over the sound of Washington’s voice and music. But it is her songwriting that leaves its mark; strong, poetic, narrative, with a distinct emotional tone. It smacks of a discipline in advance of her 24 years and defines her presence within the Australian musical landscape. “Songwriting for me sits somewhere between therapy, memory and fantasy,” says Megan, fresh from her first stint at Splendour In The Grass, where she got to belt out songs from her just-released debut album, ‘I Believe You Liar’. -

Otter Bar 2015
OOTTERBAROTTTERBERBAARR LLODGELODGEE Online Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2015 Updates Letter from the Baron We’re getting our newsletter out a little earlier this year to let you know what’s going on this upcoming season and give you a recap of last year. Despite a slow season last year (see 2014 in review) we are forging ahead with some new ideas and a mountain of energy for 2015. Times change, and we have to always be willing to reinvent ourselves. We feel very lucky to have a choice in this matter. Our first level ‘reinvention’ is to offer some new programs and ideas to help keep Otter Bar as great as ever. For 2014 we will be offering a LEVEL 4 ACA WHITEWATER KAYAK INSTRUCTOR WORKSHOP with Ben Morton and Andy Round. Also on the schedule is a much asked for course, ADVANCED KIDS WEEK in June. (See article) We are purchasing many new kayaks including a small fleet of ‘SIT-ON-TOPS’ (Do It Nows by Fluid) for those who wish to learn whitewater skills without the pressure of rolling. Avid inflatable kayakers are also welcome. We had a group of ‘IK-ers’ (inflatable kayaks) in 2014 and the skills they learned were beyond their wildest expectations. We love what we do and wish to continue on as in the past but are also looking to include new options. We have painted the exterior of the lodge and most of the interior. Keeping up on the lodge maintenance is the never-ending story of our lives. We’re also thinking about doing a VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) for the lodge. -

INAUGURAL CEREMONY October 10 2018 “I know that there are vast numbers of men who support woman and huge numbers of women who want more so together let’s create the mother of all paradigm shifts.” Jenny Morris Chrissy Amphlett PHOTOGRAPHER: TONY MOTT 2 1 “I know that there are vast numbers of men who support woman and huge numbers of women who want more so together let’s create the mother of all paradigm shifts.” Jenny Morris Chrissy Amphlett PHOTOGRAPHER: TONY MOTT 2 1 A FEW WORDS Message From AWMA Founding Director Message from the Premier & Ministers & Executive Producer It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the first Australian Women in Music Awards. VICKI GORDON We’re proud that Queensland is the inaugural home to this phenomenal program. The Queensland Government is committed to promoting the work of women in all fields, including the arts, and positions of leadership. We have pledged to appoint 50 per cent women to government boards by 2020, because we know that companies This evening we will make Australian music history. that appoint more women do better. The inaugural Australian Women in Music Awards is the result of many Australian women contribute a great deal to the country’s contemporary music industry, and yet only one in five voices and many visions coming together, all of whom refuse to allow registered songwriters and composers in our nation are women. Women also represent almost half of all Australians women’s contribution in the Australian Music Industry to be sidelined with a music qualification, and yet hold only one in four senior roles in our key music industry organisations. -
