TENNIS NEWS FROM WEST ASIA

The Junior 16 & Under and 12 & Under Gulf Cup hosted by the United Arab Emirates Tennis Association in Dubai ended in February. The Kuwait team won both titles while the teams from the host nation and Qatar were finalists in the 16 & under and 12 & Under age categories respectively.

Hichem Riani, ITF Development Officer for West Asia, attended the event and took the opportunity to meet with the representatives of each participating team: Ahmed Eid (BRN), Abdul Ridha Ghareeb and Falah Al Otaibi (KUW), Saadat Nasser Al Akhzami (OMA), Mohammed Ali Shaheen (QAT), Khaled Al Sayyah (KSA) and Mohammed Al Merri, Nasser Madani and Slah Bramly from the host nation.

The officials gathered for a meeting chaired by Mr Abdul Ridha Al Ghareeb, President of the Gulf Countries Technical Committee and conducted by Hichem Riani. Matters discussed included the Five Year Plan for National Associations wherein each country is required to submit a plan for the next five years to the ITF relating to the promotion and development of ITF Junior World Ranking and professional tournaments as well as the new Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) 14 & Under Series in their country.

The implementation of the new ATF Series means each member country is entitled to organize at least one tournament in the 14 & under age category during each season. Qatar has taken the lead in organizing two of these tournaments, with the first one scheduled for the second week of April this year. The UAE has committed to organise an event later this season and Syria and Iran are among the other countries that have committed to organise similar tournaments this year.

During this meeting, the subjects of coaches’ education and training camps for West Asian Juniors were discussed and it was felt that coaches from the region must be encouraged to participate in different workshops such as the ITF Regional and Worldwide Coaches Workshops in addition to OS/ITF Level 1 and Level 2 coaches’ courses. Riani informed the attendees that any National Association that would like to organize a course in 2005 should contact the ITF Development Department as soon as possible. The idea of a regional workshop for administrators was welcomed by all participants. Riani commented: “It was really a very interesting meeting which shows that regular gatherings will help push forward the development of tennis in West Asia”.
