Well, it’s Christmas already and in the blink of an eye the New Year will be upon us with all that it entails. 2012 was the 35th year that the MVCC or CCMVCC as it was known in the early days held a Spring swap meet in April. The annual MVCC swap meets started at Paterson in 1977 then moved to Big Bear Park in 1991, and then to Tower Park in 2004. 2013 will mark the 36th year that the MVCC has been gathering in the Spring to show off the hard work and dedication we have for our hobby and our club. 2012 saw many events and is now in the rear view. Looking forward we have the 2013, 10th anniversary of the MVCC Spring meet at Tower Park (Camp Delta) just around the corner and the MVPA National Convention returns to the west coast in Portland Oregon for 2013. (convoy plans)? Club activities only happen by communication and hard work. Regional groups are the muscle behind the events and provide coordination by putting the word out through the club newsletter and website. Event participation will increase with advance notification of the events and this should be posted as early as possible. Again the newsletter and website are great tools for this. You should be planning now for the 2013 events in your regions and get that info to Sean and I as well as your regional VPs. All of the MVCC officers, the editor and webmasters contact info is in this newsletter. Please remember all submissions to the editor need to be in by the 15th of the month to be included in the following month’s newsletter. DUES ARE DUE !!! and many seem to be putting off paying their dues. Maybe you have decided to get the newsletter for free on the website or maybe you are just lazy. The club dues cover the printing and mailing of the newsletter and all the other costs incurred at events and club functions including the MVCC 35th Anniversary Dinner. Please after you get done reading this get out your check book and fill out the renewal form, and send in your dues to the Secretary Treasurer. Please include address changes on the renewal form. It is not fair for dues paying members to carry those that do not intend to pay but continue to expect the many benefits of membership such as site discounts at Tower Park or roll over rights year to year. Members please remember to ask your regional VPs for MVCC flyers and membership applications as only you the members can grow the club. Why not rejoin and or sign up a friend today and support your club. I want to thank all the members for the submissions and ads. Please keep them coming in even if sent by stage coach or pigeon on a Denny’s napkin. I will get them in the newsletter. HAPPY NEW YEAR. YOUR EDITOR Visit our website: www.mvccnews.net 2 Events IN THE WORKS Camp Delta Spring 2013 By John Neuenburg, Camp Delta Activities Coordinator Stoney Brook volunteered to be POC for the USN & USMC Vehicle Showcase planned for that Friday morning next April. If you’d like to help him with MV placement or helping coordinate specific segments of the display, contact him at [email protected]. We expect some interesting vehicles. Remember that replica vehicles are welcome – they don’t have to be from USN/USMC contracts. Also a contract vehicle that is painted Army is OK. Uniformed “troops” are welcome and we expect some militaria and living history displays in support. Of course all MVs and military displays are welcome, and we are bringing back the official “Uniform Day” that Friday, and would like to schedule a seminar or two. What do you want to do? Spud cannons? Contact me via my info on the VP page. MVCC, December 8, 2012 6pm South Bay Area Region, Cordially invites all to a no host casual Christmas Party at Harry’s Hofbrau, 390 Saratoga Ave, San Jose Ca. This party is open to all MVCC members and their families so come on out enjoy some food and drink and celebrate the holidays with club friends. This is a great event for new members to meet and greet. You can contact Dave Ball if you need directions or info. • The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network
PLATFORMS AND OUTSIDERS IN PARTY NETWORKS: THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIGITAL POLITICAL ADVERTISING NETWORK Bridget Barrett A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Daniel Kreiss Adam Saffer Adam Sheingate © 2020 Bridget Barrett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Bridget Barrett: Platforms and Outsiders in Party Networks: The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network (Under the direction of Daniel Kreiss) Scholars seldom examine the companies that campaigns hire to run digital advertising. This thesis presents the first network analysis of relationships between federal political committees (n = 2,077) and the companies they hired for electoral digital political advertising services (n = 1,034) across 13 years (2003–2016) and three election cycles (2008, 2012, and 2016). The network expanded from 333 nodes in 2008 to 2,202 nodes in 2016. In 2012 and 2016, Facebook and Google had the highest normalized betweenness centrality (.34 and .27 in 2012 and .55 and .24 in 2016 respectively). Given their positions in the network, Facebook and Google should be considered consequential members of party networks. Of advertising agencies hired in the 2016 electoral cycle, 23% had no declared political specialization and were hired disproportionately by non-incumbents. The thesis argues their motivations may not be as well-aligned with party goals as those of established political professionals. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES .................................................................................................................... Ray and Update I wanted to meet face-to-face to hammer out some organization directional issues and to set some mutual goals for the future. Our members should be aware that when you are a member of the USMC VTA you are also a member of the Vietnam Tankers Historical Foundation. We are beginning to see an increase in activity with the historical aspects of our organization. We are sending out a call for more and more of our members to get involved in recording the story of your time in-country before checking into the “The Big Tank Park in the Sky.” We have already lost several members and with their passing so goes their unique personal history of their Vietnam combat experience. You should be aware that we plan to have a professional interviewer from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation at our Charleston reunion and he will conduct personal interview sessions with those of you who would like share your stories.

  • Don't Tread on Me: Analyzing the Effects of the Tea Party on Voting
Don’t Tread on Me: Analyzing the Effects of the Tea Party on Voting Patterns of House Democrats Nicole DeMont Department of Communication Stanford University Advisor: Shanto Iyengar June 4, 2014 Abstract: The Tea Party reached its peak during the 2010 midterm elections and helped propel Republicans into the House of Representatives. While commentary has focused on the Republican Party’s shift to the right in response to the Tea Party movement, this paper examines the Tea Party’s influence on the Democratic Party. Using Washington Post data on party voting, I find that Democrats who beat Tea Party candidates in competitive races are 6.5 percent more likely to vote with the Democratic Party in the congressional session following the 2010 midterm election. This brings the likelihood of voting with the Party up to 89.4 percent on any given vote, compared to the baseline of 82.9 percent. Possible explanations for this Tea Party effect are presented. Amid the mounting concern over the national debt and the size of the federal government, the Tea Party movement emerged in early 2009. On Tax Day, April 15, 2009, in what would be one of the largest rallies the movement would see, Tea Party protests took place in over 750 cities across the country. President Obama’s proposed healthcare bill only fueled the growth and frustrations of the Tea Party movement. Although the Democratic leadership, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, had originally dismissed the movement, by August 2009 the Democrats were forced to pay attention.

Supreme Sacrifice, Extraordinary Service: Profiles of SDSU Military Alumni by Robert Fikes, Jr., Librarian San Diego State University San Diego, CA: San Diego State University Library and Information Access, 2013 Contents Preface…...…………………………………………….1 SDSU War Memorial Profiles……………………….3 World War II…………………………………..……4 Korean War……………………………………….65 Vietnam War………………………………………74 Iraq & Afghanistan..………………………….……..97 Non-Combat Casualties…………….…….………100 Generals & Admirals……………………………….105 Outstanding Aztecs…………………………………124 SDSU Military Benchmarks……………….………144 War Memorial Statistics……………….…….…….150 References………………………………………......152 1 Preface This tribute to San Diego State University‟s military alumni started out as one of three sabbatical projects in the fall of 2005 and initially was intended to be a survey of the school‟s contributions to the nation‟s armed forces. The inspiration for attempting this occurred several years earlier when a colleague informed me of letters written by former students serving in the military during World War II to Dr. Lauren Post (right), a popular geography professor and football coach. Post‟s brainchild was a newsletter, the only one of its kind in the nation, that was distributed worldwide and kept this group of alumni in contact with one another and with those left on the home front. It is the often poignant, deliberately understated experiences told in the letters by young men and women, many of whom soon perished, that demands a retelling to this and future generations. Early in the project, I began to investigate the lives of a few of the fallen heroes listed on the university‟s war monument in order to have some examples to cite in an essay, but as I looked closely at the abbreviated life of one deceased person after another the more I became fascinated with each of them as individuals.
