The hoS w was Yesterday: Redefining the Writing and Research Process through Mixing and Sampling Abstract In his 2003 article "The 1963 ipH -Hop Machine: Hip-Hop Pedagogy as Composition," Jeff Rice calls for a 'whatever' pedagogy that presents an "alternative research methodology for composition" using digital sampling as instrument for writing the argumentative essay. "The hoS w was Yesterday" is an effort to reinvigorate Rice's methodology by updating it in relation to contemporary digital platforms suited to sampling and mixing. Asserting that "The hoS w was Yesterday" identifies the conventional essay as a metaphor for the encore, or a relatively small artifact that evidences a students' grasps of complex concepts. The sho" w" therefore, is metaphoric of the holistic process of planning, researching, and the sampling and mixing of sources toward the invention of an original and substantive argument.
