Background Belmore Boys High School Audio Engineering staff and students are responsible for the audio and lighting production, in conjunction with a team of highly experienced production crew whose credits include InXs, David Bowie, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Screaming Jets, Mental As Anything and Midnight Oil.

Other students involved in this aspect have been drawn from Wiley Park Girls High, Kirrawee High, Woolooware High, Turramurra High, Gunedah High, Merriwa Central, Hunter River High, Lucas Heights Community School, The Jannali High while additional staff are from Robert Townson High, Punchbowl Boys High, Lurnea High, Camden High and Picnic Point High.

The event which is grass roots in nature is seen as the most significant and credible event of its kind by both the Music Industry and participants alike. Judges are drawn from major record companies and music publishers, prominent booking agents and promoters, as well as successful artists.

Approximately 100 video entries are received annually, which are culled to between 32 & 40 bands by an experienced review panel, and these bands then have the opportunity to perform live before prominent and influential music industry personnel and compete for in excess of $10,000 worth of prizes . From 1994 to 2015 silverchair donated $1000 cash for the best original song award.

The now famous Australian group ‘silverchair’ was a past YouthRock winner and YouthRock continues to identify and promote emerging amateur rock bands.

Other artists include Alex Lloyd (ex Balmain High), Quirk (Moruya High) who toured as support to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Sony Stevan (Belmore Boys High) who played lead guitar for Enrique Iglesias on his recent world tour and Hayley Warner (currently managed by April Lavignes Management) who song writing abilities have come to the fore, penning half the songs on the latest Tina Arena Album and nominated for both Aria(Taylor Henderson, Reece Mastin) and Grammy Awards(Tori Kelly - "Hollow"). Her latest achievement is having a song selected to appear on country muisc giants, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's latest album. Morgan Evans winner of both Tamworth Golden Guitar Awards and US Awards such as "CMA Global Music Award", host of Foxtel's Country Music Channel and supporting such artists as Taylor Swift and Alan Jackson.

The event began in 1988 as a joint venture between Belmore Boys High, Canterbury City Council, Police Blue Light Disco and YouthRock. Originally a local band competition with 8 competitors from Canterbury it gradually grew into a statewide event. Over the years it has been staged at Campsie Orion Centre, Seymour Centre, Sutherland Entertainment Centre and Bankstown Entertainment Centre. Other performance opportunities have included The Royal Easter Show, Darling Harbour, 's Wonderland, Telstra Stadium, NRL Semi-Finals and the Big Day Out at the Homebush Stadium.
