Bibliographic maintenance and auxiliary statistics: 9,078 bibliographic records were modified. 7,577 authority records were added to the database and 3,607 authority records were modified. -
American Folklife Center & Veterans History Project Annual Report for FY2008
AMERICAN FOLKLIFE CENTER & VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT Library of Congress Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2008 (October 2007-September 2008) The American Folklife Center (AFC), which includes the Veterans History Project (VHP), had another productive year. Over a quarter million items were acquired by the AFC Archive, which is the country’s first national archive of traditional life, and one of the oldest and largest of such repositories in the world. About 240,000 items were processed, and thus made available to researchers at the Library and beyond. In addition, the Center continued to expand programming through symposia, concerts, and public lectures; by providing field school training to universities and international organizations; and by providing technical assistance to individuals and groups. AFC also continued to be a leader in international discussions concerning traditional culture and intellectual property, and the AFC director served as a member of US delegations to meetings convened by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), UNESCO, and the Organization of American States (OAS). Both AFC and VHP provided substantial services to Congress. The Veterans History Project (VHP) continued making major strides in its mission to collect and preserve the stories of our nation's veterans, receiving upwards of 100 collections a week and acquiring over 22,000 items. The maturation of the Project was reflected by its partnership with WETA-TV and PBS in their presentation of the Ken Burns film, The War, which told the story of World War II through the memories of individual veterans from four American towns. VHP also continued to foster solid working relationships with a wide variety of project participants nationwide, including the U.S. -

Internal Migration and the Left Futures That Internal Migration Place-Specifi c Introduction Never Were and the Left Material Resources THE SOUTH AND THE MAKING OF THE AMERICAN OTHER: FOLK MUSIC, INTERNAL MIGRATION, AND THE CULTURAL LEFT Risto Lenz In 1940, actor and activist Will Geer organized the “Grapes of Wraths Evening,” a benefi t concert for the John Steinbeck Committee for Agricultural Workers at Forrest Theater in New York City. The pro- gram served as a blueprint for what would later defi ne the American folk music revival: Urban Northerners sharing the stage with “authentic” rural Southerners, together celebrating America’s musical heritage in a politically charged framework (here: helping migrant farmwork- ers). Among the “real” folk were Aunt Molly Jackson, an organizer for the Kentucky coal mines and a singer of union songs, Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter, an African American songster from Louisiana, and Woody Guthrie, a singer from Oklahoma. The FWP carried out numerous folk music collecting expeditions in Florida through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Folklorists such as Zora Neale Hurston, Alan Lomax, and Stetson Kennedy led the expeditions and traveled throughout Florida to record blues, “jook” songs, work songs, and traditional music from African American, Cuban, Czech, Greek, Minorcan, Seminole, and Slavic communities. -

A few were produced by the Archive itself but, more often than not, arrangement with record companies was the principal method by which this material became available. One of the earliest collections of this type was a three-album boxed set drawn from the recordings made for the Archive by Huddie Ledbetter — Leadbelly — issued by Elektra in 1966. Edited by Lawrence Cohn, this compilation included a very useful booklet, with transcriptions of the songs and monologues contained in the albums, a résumé of Leadbelly‘s career, and a selection of important historical photographs. The remainder of Leadbelly‘s considerable body of recordings for the Archive, however, was generally unavailable, unless auditioned in Washington, D.C. In the history of vernacular black music in the U.S., Leadbelly‘s controversial role as a leading performer in white ‗folk‘ music circles has, for some, set him aside from other similar performers of his generation. -

Book Notes #71 August 2021 By Jefferson Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Andrew Roth Songs of Freedom, Songs of Protest Part One As always, reader responses give me ideas for future Book Notes. In this and next week’s Book Notes, I’ll be following the suggestion of several readers who, in response to the two Book Notes in June on patriotic music, thought it might be interesting to canvass America’s tradition of protest music. If one of my The American Tapestry Project’s major threads is “Freedom’s Faultlines”, those tales of race and gender, those tales of exclusion and the many times America did not live up to its stated ideals, then the songs those excluded sang as they fought for inclusion ring patriotic. For, as the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his last speech the night before he was murdered, “Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right!” [1] And, those “rights” found some of their most memorable expressions in songs of protest exhorting America, as King said, “Be true to what you said on paper.” [2] In this Note, we’ll answer “What is a protest song?”, and we’ll consider three approaches to exploring protest music: a chronological approach, a thematic- genre approach, and although it sounds kind of silly a “Greatest Hits” approach. There actually are “Top Ten”, “Top Fifty” protest song lists from reputable sources floating around the internet. Finally, we’ll dive into two of the genres for a closer look at songs protesting environmental issues and, most famously, anti-war songs from World War I through the War in Viet Nam to Operation Iraqi Freedom. -

We know about Woody Guthrie’s early years in Okemah and Pampa, his formative political and musical development in Los Angeles, and his later years spent in New York City. Much less is known about his remarkably productive one-month stint in the state of Oregon in 1941. Guthrie was h i r e d b y t h e B o n n e v i l l e P o w e r Administration (BPA) in Portland, Oregon, where the US Department of the Interior was constructing the massive Grand Coulee Dam project on the Columbia River. The job involved writing a group of songs to be used in a documentary film to promote hydro-electrical power. Although the job was supposed to last an entire year, Stephen Kahn, the administrator who had written Guthrie about the job (on the recommendation of Alan Lomax), decided that reclassifying the job as an “emergency appointment” for a single month would not require a security check by the Civil Service Commission. Kahn was not wrong: J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI were on Guthrie’s trail by the time he completed the job, but Guthrie had moved on before his hiring could be prevented. -
