The song was written by the band's vocalist Dan Baird and released in 1986 as their debut single. The single reached #2 the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of February 21, 1987, and fell short of the first part of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. Editing from the 1985 demo tape The original 1985 recording showed an additional repetition of the chorus along with a longer version of the instrumental part. But because of the budget for the album, the song was edited into a more prominent version. (quote necessary) Content Song twelve bar blues in key major with a moderate tempo of about 112 beats per minute. It follows a chord pattern of A-D-A-E-A, with vocals ranging from D4 to A5. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who refuses to become more intimate with her boyfriend until he marries her. Stephen Thomas Erlewin of Allmusic wrote that the song shocked as much as Chuck Berry's old song, and was almost as clever. In 99 Red Balloons: And 100 All-Time One-Hit Wonders, Brent Mann wrote that it's just a perpetual, throw-out jam-rock and roll number. Dan Baird digs into the vocals of the song with a no-holds-barred zest straight out of Texas honky-tonk. Music video This section does not cite any sources. These scenes continue until the last verse, where they arrive for the wedding and meet guests. The band continues to play on the currently parked tablet. During the instrumental outro, Baird is stripped of his guitar and carried by two men to the bride as the wedding cake comes out. As Baird (now in a tuxedo) kisses his new bride, it is finally revealed that the bride is quite pregnant. The same tablet, now with tins tied to it and just married painted on a flat part, is seen cruising down the highway.
