NINE TREASURES Mongolen Folk Metal (China) NINE TREASURES Mongolen Folk Metal (China) “The spirit transmits truly international feelings that are incarnated by an unbowed lust for life.” After this, I believe we will see them occupying higher spots at festivals … --- Spiegel Online ... one of China's hottest metal band, the Nine Treasures, who have already won the country's biggest international heavy metal competition ... --- Promoter of WOMEX 2015 There is no doubt that in the future the group will gain popularity and assessment at the global level. The group live performances are very energetic and the playing time is difficult to quietly stand on the spot. Joy, enthusiasm and emotional wealth is what characterizes the Nine Treasures ... --- RockHard Online Magazine “Every now and then, we find a metal band from another corner of the world that blow our minds. Right now, that band is Nine Treasures” ---- Metal Hammer UK Metal Hammer UK # 261 (September 2014) Painkiller Magazine CN #50 (November 2013) Billboard Radio China – China Calling #13 “Goldmine Mongolia: Nine Treasures” .

"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

  • Heavy Metal Music and Culture in Rapidly Changing Global Markets
Heavy Metal Music and Culture in Rapidly Changing Global Markets Marko Seppi Gabriela Stoycheva Bachelor’s Thesis June 2015 Degree Programme in Music and Media Management School of Business Description Authors Type of publication Date Seppi, Marko Bachelor’s thesis 13.05.2015 Stoycheva, Gabriela Language of publication: English Number of pages Permission for web 65 publication: x Title of publication Heavy Metal Music and Culture in Rapidly Changing Global Markets Degree programme Degree Programme in Music and Media Management Tutor(s) Mikkulainen, Ilari Assigned by Modern Heavy Metal Conference 2015 Abstract Music industry has undergone major transformations widely influenced by music digitalisation and rapid popularisation of online streaming services, subscription models and social media websites. Heavy metal music, being a part of the global music industry, has also experienced the impact of such rapid changes, and it is constantly evolving and reshaping its cultural representation. The development, common practices and innate traits of the heavy metal genre have become an object growing scholarly interest in the last decade and especially with the emergence of international academic conferences and societies dedicated to heavy metal music research. The objective of this study was to illustrate the current standing of heavy metal music in terms of markets and culture and its most distinctive mechanisms of development which differentiate it from other popular music markets in 2015. The thesis was implemented in co-operation with the Modern Heavy Metal Conference, an international academic research conference, which aims at exploring the current specifics of the heavy metal genre. The research was executed in the form of a case study relying on qualitative data acquired from professional field researchers and scholars by using semi-structured interviews.
