This month the Parish starts a kerbside recycling scheme for around 600 homes, with households being asked to separate their waste into coloured bags before collection. St Helier visits St Helier It turns out that our St Helier is not unique . Just over the water in Rennes, another St Helier exists – in this case a district of that charming French city. Growing links between the two St Heliers led to an invitation for two Jersey chefs to take part in a local food festival last month. Left: On Sunday 13th June, St Helier Jersey visited The Constable with the Jersey chefs St Helier Rennes on important business. Two and representatives from Rennes. Jersey chefs had been invited to give in a cookery demonstration as part of the Festival Above/Below: Gourmand, a food event taking place in the Jersey chefs and representatives city’s covered market. It was an important from Rennes give a telivised lesson. opportunity to cement ties between St Helier and the Breton capital, and a great chance to extol the delights of Jersey restaurants in a country famed for its culinary excellence. A stage was set up with a full k itchen and cameras that allowed the audience to observe everything going on. With the Constable of St Helier acting as translator, the first demonstration got underway with Chef Alvino Franca of Manos restaurant in Wests Centre preparing a traditional Portuguese Cataplana dish including potatoes. Next up was Steve Walker from the Royal Yacht, who cooked Jersey sea bass accompanied by gnocchi. Afterwards, the audience were offered the chance to sample the dishes and ask questions. At the end, everyone agreed the visit was an outstanding success and great promotion of Jersey produce and cuisine. Town Centre Manager Richard Mackenzie, who organised the trip, was delighted with how it turned out. ‘I am sure this event helps in building a par tnership with Rennes, a large and vibrant city which must offer St Helier many trading opportunities.’ A repeat event to be held in St Helier Jersey is alr eady planned. f

This would create more public open space, allow for the widening of pavements on Bath Street, and support traffic calming measures across Bath Street which will also enhance the visibility and status of the Parish Yard site, say Le Masurier. Improved personal safety in this area has been highlighted as an objective in the North Town Master Plan. Le Masurier will work with the to provide a suitable crime impact statement with initiatives including improved lighting, CCTV and pedestrian safety and security. Replacement of the former Odeon Cinema Le Masurier say the demolition and replacement of the former Odeon Cinema are critical to their proposals but in return, their investment will significantly enhance the north of St Helier. The existing building would be very difficult and costly to refurbish and there is the added complication of the existence of large volumes of asbestos content within the structure of the building. For a number of years Le Masurier subsidised the loss-making New Forum Cinema now the company say it is time for the former Odeon cinema to be replaced by an elegant, contemporary and quality building.
