HEALTH RESORTS: Semmering 1926 & 1937 Extract and extended reprint of the great original by Jan van Reek, www.endgame.nl SEMMERING 1926 The southern road from Wien leads to the Semmering Pass. The Grand Hotel Panhans was built at the Semmering in 1888. This facility was used for a tournament of eighteen masters from 7 until 29 iii 1926. Spielmann’s name stood not on the first list of Bernstein! Later he was invited. Nimzowitsch and Tartakower led at first. Spielmann and Alekhine competed for the first prize then. Finally, Rudolf Spielman surprisingly won, ahead of Alekhine on second place. Vidmar sr. was sole third, followed by Nimzowitsch and Tartakower as fourth, Rubinstein and Tarrasch as sixth, in total 18 players contested: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1013596 (Chessgames) Grand Hotel Panhans at the Semmering Casino of Baden bei Wien in modern times SEMMERING / BADEN bei Wien 1937 Casinos had to spend a part of their income on cultural aims. And a chess tournament is relatively cheap and deluxe promotion. That was the base for many chess events in casinos. When Austrian casinos organised a grandmaster contest in 1937, chaos ruled. Some men got phony invitations at first. Only Capablanca was treated with respect. Matters were sorted out, before the tournament was played from 8 until 27 ix 1937. Eight excellent masters carried out double rounds. World champion Euwe was chief arbiter. When he left, Spielmann replaced him. The first four rounds were conducted at the Grand Hotel Panhans in Semmering, and then moved to the Hotel Grüner Baum in Baden bei Wien, Austria for the duration of the tournament.

No. 26 Vol. II October 1971 Engineer PAUL FARAGO - Honoured Master of Sport is not longer among .us On 1.x11.70 the news of the death of Engineer Paul Farago saddened all those who had known and admired him for his profound and original studies - studies which for three decades brought his country famous successes in important international competitions . This was a great loss for Romanian chess ; it was Paul Fara o who lifted Romanian problemi sts to unexpected heights, who discovered new ways of enriching traditional methods especially' by strengthening Black's play so that points of great subtlety were ~ntroduced. Born in Hungary in the village of Perag on 4.iv.1886, he graduated from the high school in Kecskem et and, the Polytechnic ' m Budapest as a geodetic engineer and settled down m CluJ, Romania m 1910. It was at Clu'~ that I made his acquaintance, four decades later, when as a young study-composer I had the opportunity of visiting him and all those who had known and admired him for his profound and learning something from the craftsmanship of this materS who m I greatly admired . Since then I visited him as often as I could, and the first thing I learned was that a good ending is the realization o f an original idea, aesthetic and profound, m an economic position, with a solution rich in points and surprises . ." His first study was published m 1899, at the age of 13 . After several smaller successes (2nd prize 'm the International Competition of the Romanian Chess Review in 1935 and 1st prize, 'm theesame year m the competition organized in memory of W .

Each letter can be finessed by a + or - giving 12 possible levels. The judgement will be subjective, of course, but based on decades of experience. F = Fine or nearly new // VG = very good // G = showing acceptable signs of wear. P = Poor, structural damage (loose covers, torn pages, heavy marginalia etc.) but still providing much of interest. AN = Algebraic Notation in which, from White’s point of view, columns are called a – h and ranks are numbered 1-8 (as opposed to the old descriptive system). Figurine, in which piece names are replaced by pictograms, is now almost universal in modern books as it overcomes the language problem. In this case AN may be assumed. pp = number of pages in the book.// ed = edition // insc = inscription – e.g. a previous owner’s name on the front endpaper. o/w = otherwise. dw = Dust wrapper It may be assumed that any book published in Russia will be in the Russian language, (Cyrillic) or an Argentinian book will be in Spanish etc. Anything contrary to that will be mentioned. PB = paperback. SB = softback i.e. a flexible cover that cannot be torn easily.

The newly combined entity, now named the United States of America Chess Federation (and currently known as US Chess), primarily promoted tournament play throughout the country. More importantly, the U.S. Chess Championship, the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Olympiad team now fell under a single organizational roof and served about 1,000 members. There have been many important milestones since 1939 as US Chess grew and evolved. Bobby Fischer’s quest for the World Championship in the 1960s and 1970s, the growth of scholastic chess, the broadening of the US Chess mission beyond the organization’s singular focus of rated play, and most recently, Fabiano Caruana’s challenge to Magnus Carlsen for the World Championship. Along the way, US Chess has learned much about itself and what a powerful tool chess is. As we Second, we accept chess as a tool for the social and now look towards the century mark and approach emotional development of young people. Chess is 100,000 members, we embrace our heritage while a game where sportsmanship is core to the game’s looking for new ways to excel. As a 501(c)(3) culture.

I quietly watched until the young boy White Knight (perhaps 12) shouted “checkmate” and the father smiled and shook his head.
