Why are changes being introduced? The twelve Household Waste Recovery Centres (HWRCs) are provided for residents of to use. Due to Government cuts, opening days have been changed for five sites – As shown above. The council worked closely with SUEZ (who manage the sites through a PFI contract) to ensure that the changes made would impact on the least amount of residents, maintain workable shift patterns for site staff, and continue to provide an extensive network of 12 conveniently located sites across the county. When will the changes happen? From Tuesday 4th October, the five effected sites will be open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday only. Those sites are located at North Sunderland (near Seahouses), Wooler, Kirkley West Thorn, Allendale and Haltwhistle. Times of opening are unchanged. What can I do with my waste if I usually visit one of the affected sites? If you wish to use one of the HWRCs which are open 4 days per week, you are advised to plan your visit around the opening days Friday – Monday inclusive. If that is not possible then perhaps you could visit one of the sites which are open 7-days per week, whilst out shopping, travelling to or from work etc. Reuse You might like to give your waste another life by offering it for free at your local charity shop, using an online swap shop e.g. www.ukfreecycle.org www.dontdumpthat.com www.snaffleup.co.uk www.ilovefreegle.org Skip hire/ Hippo bags It may be more convenient to you to hire a private skip (see Yellow Pages or www.skipandbin.com ) or a waste bag service available at DIY stores.
