Beilby “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rul- ers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:10–12 NRSV). These words of the apostle Paul have echoed down the corridors of church history. For two millennia, they have inspired Christians toward courageous living, wise discernment, engaging prayer, and bold action. They have also served as one of the common sites of exegetical skirmish in a long-running intra-Christian dialogue and debate about the nature and extent, the bibli- cal and theological moorings, and the rational, experiential, and practical implications of what has come to be known simply as “spiritual warfare.” Some issues of interest and dialogue within the church have their day in the sun and then, for all practical purposes, disappear. Others, however, never really leave us. They may ebb and flow; they may have seasons of higher or lower profile; they may find themselves the subject of a larger or smaller number of books published in any given year. But in one way or another they remain on the church’s radar. Spiritual warfare appears to be one of these issues. From pulpit sermons to religious radio, from internet websites to conference halls to the quarterly catalogs of Christian publishers (both trade and academic; fiction and nonfiction), the topic of spiritual warfare never seems to grow old.     The Devil’s in the Details: A Comprehensive Look at the Salem Witch Mania of 1692 __________ Ashley Layhew Nine-year-old Betty Parris began to convulse, seize, and scream gibber- ish in the winter of 1692. The doctor pronounced her bewitched when he could find no medical reason for her actions. Five other girls began ex- hibiting the same symptoms: auditory and visual hallucinations, fevers, nausea, diarrhea, epileptic fits, screaming, complaints of being bitten, poked, pinched, and slapped, as well as coma-like states and catatonic states. Beseeching their Creator to ease the suffering of the “afflicted,” the Puritans of Salem Village held a day of fasting and prayer. A relative of Betty’s father, Samuel Parris, suggested a folk cure, in which the urine of the afflicted girls was taken and made into a cake. The villagers fed the cake to a dog, as dogs were believed to be the evil helpers of witches. This did not work, however, and the girls were pressed to name the peo- ple who were hurting them.1 The girls accused Tituba, a Caribbean slave who worked in the home of Parris, of being the culprit. They also accused two other women: Sarah Good and Sarah Osbourne. The girls, all between the ages of nine and sixteen, began to accuse their neighbors of bewitching them, saying that three women came to them and used their “spectres” to hurt them. The girls would scream, cry, and mimic the behaviors of the accused when they had to face them in court. They named many more over the course of the next eight months; the “bewitched” youth accused a total of one hundred and forty four individuals of being witches, with thirty sev- en of those executed following a trial.

In service to this, the Gospel develops a secondary interest in the identity and fate of John The Baptist. John, as Elijah redivivus, provides reasons to believe that Jesus is the Christ, provides a grid by which Jesus’ ministry and identity can be comprehended, and helps justify and explicate the unexpected death of the Messiah. This is accomplished through various literary devices throughout the narrative. For them to be fully effective it is necessary for the implied reader to be actively involved. The fact that Jesus’ identity and John’s identity are not adequately acknowledged within the narrative suggests that the plot moves towards a recognition of both of these figures. Jesus’ identity and John’s identity are related, in such a way that a recognition of John’s witness and identity leads towards a recognition of Jesus’ identity and fate. To understand John is to understand Jesus, and to misunderstand John is to misunderstand Jesus.

Although this infamous treatise served as the official chronicle and apologia of the 1692 witch trials, and excerpts from Wonders of the Invisible World are widely anthologized, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared since the nineteenth century. This present edition seeks to remedy this lacuna in modern scholarship, presenting Mather’s seventeenth-century text next to an integrated theory of the natural causes of the Salem witch panic.     “SO SATAN HATH HIS MYSTERIES TO BRING US TO ETERNAL RUINE:” SATAN AS PROVACATEUR IN PURITAN MINISTERS’ WRITINGS, 1662–1704 Michael Kneisel A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2014 Committee: Ruth Wallis Herndon, Advisor Bernard Rosenthal © 2014 Michael Kneisel All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ruth Wallis Herndon, Advisor Satan was a prominent figure in American Puritan theology in the late seventeenth century, and the witchcraft trials provide a unique opportunity to analyze how religious leaders thought about Satan. As I will show, Puritan ministers and lawmakers transformed the Devil into a character with increased power and agency during the period of the Sale Witch Trials. This transformation is revealed in the writings of these six Puritan ministers during the era of the witchcraft trials, when concerns about Satan’s activity reached fever pitch. The amorphous, undefined characterization of the Devil in the Bible allowed these ministers to perceive Satan in a variety of roles, including that of independent agent or provocateur. Much of the secondary material on the witch trials regards actual explanations about why they occurred and why they were so severe and numerous in Salem. This project diverges from existing scholarship in that I am not looking to explain about why the Salem witch trials they occurred or why they were so severe and numerous. My work moves in a different direction, examining how Puritan ministers thought about Satan as a critical element of the events. Focusing on their beliefs about Satan, his agency, and his potential power will give a new perspective on the events of the Salem Witch Trials, as well as on Puritan society in the late seventeenth century.

INTRODUCTION: THE PUZZLE OF RACIAL INEQUALITY It is a central problem in the great American conversation about race to explain persistent racial inequality. The dominant narrative1 tells us that, historically, racial inequality was caused directly and simply, by explicit and intentional racial discrimination based on unreasoning race hatred.2 The paradigmatic examples are slavery and segregation; the icon is Bull Connor.3 Together, the Civil War and the civil rights movement comprise America’s delivery from this original sin.

In this article, I argue that late twentieth-century satanic ritual abuse discourse helped perpetuate intolerance toward non-Christian religions and foreclose conditions of possibility for benign religious difference in the United States. Psychological diagnoses related to satanic ritual abuse fueled popular anxieties regarding the sexual peril of American minority religions. Perpetuating diagnoses of satanic ritual abuse reinforced popular suspicions that religious minorities are dangerous, particularly when it comes to matters of sexuality. Re´sume´ : Au cours des anne´es 1980 et 1990, des centaines de femmes ame´ricaines ont raconte´ avoir e´te´ victimes de violences religieuses extraordinaires de la part de leurs proches (famille et figures d’autorite´). Ce phe´nome`ne a e´te´ de´signe´ par le terme de SRA (satanic ritual abuse). Cet article avance l’hypothe`se selon laquelle ces re´cits d’abus sataniques rituels ont soutenu et encourage´ un discours d’intole´rance envers les religions non-chre´tiennes aux E´tats-Unis.
