Summer Term 2018 In Federation with Bilbrook (CE) and Middle Schools

Welcome

to

Phew…. We’ve made it. Over the last academic year, we have had a “proper” winter with significant snowfall and a “proper” summer with CONTENTS stifling heat. I’m pretty sure that everyone, staff and students, are INFORMATION ready for the long summer break and deserve plenty of time to relax. School Uniform

Not only did we have the joys of the weather but across the Federation Cheshire Oaks Christmas we have had all three schools inspected within the last twelve months. Shopping Trip We are very proud of the fact that we now have all three schools with the “Good” grading from Ofsted. Three inspections within a twelve month period is some kind of record for any Headteacher I think! HOUSE NEWS The inspection at the High School was an interesting experience. JAVA / MATRIX

Whilst we were inevitably happy that Ofsted rubber stamped our OBERON / VECTOR “Good” rating once again we did feel that there was an enormous amount of excellent work that goes on across the school on a day-to-day basis that they didn’t get to see. The feedback from students, staff and STUDENT NEWS History visit to parents has been incredibly positive with a reassuring recognition of Art Exhibition the improvements we have made in the last few years. Our goal across all three schools is to develop a world class learning environment and Y10 Work Experience

I’m confident that with the on-going improvements that we are making Y11 Prom 2018

on a monthly basis we will secure even better judgements next time Matrix “Walk for Dreams” around.

Our Year 11 and Year 13 students left on a high note. The Prom, in particular, was a high note with higher than ever numbers attending. It was a fantastic night and a lovely way to mark the end of their 6th FORM New Ambassadors education at Codsall High School. However, it will be fantastic to see so Charity Fundraising many of Year 11 returning to the 6th form in September, refreshed and ready for the next challenge. Farewell Y13

CODSALL COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM CODE 2018 ONWARDS

Rationale for having a uniform code By choosing to send your child to CCHS there is an implicit agreement that the school’s policies and standards will be adhered to and, more importantly, supported. We do not want to waste your time or ours being diverted from our core purpose i.e. learning, by having battles about uniform. We have significantly enhanced the level of detail in our uniform guidance to ensure that there is little confusion or room for interpretation. We will be reviewing our uniform in the next year.

Why do we have a school uniform?

1. Helps to Prevent Bullying

2. Promotes School Spirit and a sense of pride

3. Eases Morning Routines

4. Money Saving

We are determined that we have the highest standards possible for our young people to ensure that they are well prepared for life after school. By giving parents much more detailed guidance we anticipate that we will avoid some of the more recent issues experienced. A minority of students are refusing to follow our uniform code with parental support. Please be aware that we will be operating a far more rigorous approach to uniform than in previous years. (Please see page 4 examples of uniform that is acceptable and unacceptable.)

Boys Girls White shirt with a top button White shirt with a top button School house tie (purchased in school) School house tie (purchased in school) Suit trousers as illustrated below. Consequences of not following the uniform code

Due to the advance warning students / parents have had the decision to come to school in the incorrect uniform will be seen as a deliberate contravention of school rules. For all bar exceptional medical circumstances (backed up with a note from a GP) students wearing the incorrect uniform will be isolated UNTIL THE PARENT / CARER brings the correct article of uniform to school. On a glorious day in June, Year 12 History students, accompanied by Miss Wallett, took part in a visit to Birmingham library.

For their A-level, History students have to write an essay between 3,000-4,000 words on a topic of their choice.

The aim of the visit was to allow them to do some independent research on their topics. After a good half hour of watching them wander, seemingly lost, all managed to locate the history section and find some relevant material.

It was a good day that gave the students a taste of university-style work.

In June, Codsall Community High School was awarded the Bronze School Games Mark for commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2017/18.

Mr Harding, Executive Headteacher, said ‘I am delighted that the school has received this award for the first time in a number of years. We will continue to look to further enhance our commitment to and delivery of competitive sport in school.’

Mr Horsfield, head of PE, said ‘I am very pleased to have received CODSALL COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL recognition for the PE department and students hard work and commitment to PE and sports competitions outside of school time. I hope we go one better and achieve silver mark next year!’ Summer 2018 Newsletter Page 8

Year 10 students took part in a week-long work experience placement week from 2nd to 6th July. The aim was to give them an experience of the workplace and to help them decide on a future career path. Here are some of their experiences:

‘During my work experience at Wild Zoological Park, I had to clean out the animal cages, and take the animals round to show the visitors. Every afternoon I had to prepare food for the animals which included me using the right measurements and amounts for each different type of animal. I learnt a lot about the animals and how to look after them. I enjoyed my time there.’

Chloe Snape (V7) following her work experience at WILD Zoological Park,

‘My work experience was in retail based in The Entertainer in Wolverhampton. I particularly enjoyed working with new people and getting to know what retail was like. Plus I got to play with the latest toys. Overall I think it gave me an insight into how important communication and confidence is when working with people and dealing with people on a day-to-day basis.’

Luca Tristram (M4) following his work experience at The Entertainer

‘With regards to my work experience at Lloyds Chemist, although it wasn’t my chosen field, I have really enjoyed my time working for them. It has given me an insight into working in a retail environment, dealing with day to day prescriptions and stock control. I dealt with customers who required help in locating items, thus I felt I gained a lot of customer service and product knowledge.’

Lily Ford (J6) following her work experience at Lloyds Pharmacy, Perton

‘I went to the Art Gallery for a few days and the Wolverhampton City Archives. At the Archives I helped to archive documents and records. These things are sent by members of the public and organisations who want them to be preserved. It included things like census data and information from youth and community clubs. I very much enjoyed it because I am interested in ’History and how things are kept, and I enjoyed looking at documents from the past.’

Erik Regan (O1) following his work experience at Wolverhampton Art Gallery and City Archives

‘For my work experience I went to Codsall Library. I learned how to shelve books in the correct places and how to use the computer system, which requests and transfers books from other libraries. I helped out with various activities, such as Baby Bounce and Rhyme, setting up the furniture for the reading groups and helped out with the Summer Reading Challenge. I enjoyed working in the library because it was stress-free and relaxing. I would consider working in a library in the future.’

Several of our alumni students have returned to Codsall High School recently to talk to current students about various options open to them when they finish school.

Alice Palant is presently on a Marketing Apprenticeship employed by City of Wolverhampton College. Alice and her colleagues were offering information from a stall at our careers fair in February.

Lee Sproson and James Davies came into school to take part in Speed information sessions, apprenticeships presentation and our annual careers fair. Both students went down the apprenticeships route to gain employment with UTC Aerospace.

Claire Weetman is a student at Wellbeck 6th Form Defence College.

Claire came back into school in March to present an assembly to Year 10 students around her journey and Wellbeck 6th Form college and engineering roles within the armed forces.

Claire was the first winner of the ‘Jaguar Land Rover Award for Outstanding Achievement’. She won the award for promoting women in science and engineering. This award is given as part of our ‘Business Class Partnership’ with Jaguar Land Rover. Summer 2018 Newsletter Page 19

Friday, 15 June saw the Football Academy hosting an U15 football tournament organised by Mr Scott and the PE department on the 3G pitches at Codsall High School.

In total thirteen teams took part in the tournaments across two groups, with the top two teams in each group progressing to the semi finals. There were around 100 players on site with a further 100 spectators.

The winners of the tournament were Town Newlands FC U15, and the runners-up were Town FC U15.

Winning team Hednesford Town Newlands FC U15

A Y9 team from Codsall High School was entered into the tournament as many of our Y10 students already represented other local teams in the competition. The Year 9s did very well, winning three out of five games, and beating our Year 10s on several occasions, but they sadly failed to qualify, finishing third in the group to both eventual finalists. Considering they are a year younger than the rest of the competitors, they did an excellent job representing the school at this event. Runners-up Dudley Town FC U15

Members of the 6th form ambassador team sold refreshments and held a raffle to raise money for charity. Their efforts raised £103.50 for Cancer Research UK. Summer 2018 Newsletter Page 20

Over a weekend in April three teams of netball players were entered into a tournament held at Condover Hall Activity Centre in .

The teams, a Year 7-8 team from Perton Middle School and teams from Year 9 and Year 10 from Codsall High School, experienced great success and conducted themselves brilliantly!

We're already looking forward to the next trip which is booked for 5th - 7th April 2019.

On 25th June the Year 9 Sports Captains took part in the Leadership Playmakers Award at Leisure Centre.

They took part in a number of workshops aimed at helping students to deliver sports events to younger children in a bid to tackle obesity in children.

It was great to see them taking part with such enthusiasm. Well done!

Congratulations to our Y9 & 10 cricket team who played in the U15 Staffs. Cricket ‘Chance to Compete Outdoors’ Boys Competition which was held at Wolverhampton Cricket Club on 5th June.

They won their game against eventual finalists Moseley Park, lost to Aldersley & Wolgarston and tied with Sandwell Academy.

Well done!

CODSALL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ACADEMY CROWNED USA SOCCER CHAMPTIONS

The Football Academy students are celebrating after becoming double Needham Memorial Day Tournament soccer champions.

For the ninth consecutive year, our Year 12 Football Academy students flew to the USA to take part in the Needham Memorial Day Tournament, the largest soccer competition in the USA with over 1,100 teams competing.

Having won the under 17s tournament twice in 2013 and 2015, and once winning the u19 competition in 2016, this year saw both teams win their respective u18 section, playing a year up from their natural age group of u17s.

Following an early friendly match vs. Needham Soccer Club which we won 2-1 (Pugh, Harley), the tournament started.

The games played were as follows:

Codsall 2 - 0 Greenwich Utd (Khayat, Douglas)

Codsall 6 - 4 SCNY (Fitton, Brooks, Styles, Pugh (3))

Codsall 6 - 0 Westpoint Elite (Pugh (3), Harley (2), Winkle

Codsall 5 - 0 Nirvana City (Harley (3), Styles, Simmonds)

Codsall 2 - 0 Alleycats Rangers (Harley, Winkle)

Codsall 2 - 1 Brentwood Arsenal (Taylor, Harley)

FINAL #1 Codsall 3 - 0 Nirvana City (Harley, Pugh, Simmonds)

FINAL #2 Codsall 3 - 2 Greenwich Utd (Khayat, Harley, Pugh) Summer 2018 Newsletter Page 24

Both teams played in temperatures of up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, progressing well through the group stages against some difficult opposition, winning every game outright prior to both finals. The first final was won comfortably 3-0 against Nirvana City from New York before then beating Greenwich Utd from Connecticut 3-2 in a very close fought second final.

This year the Needham Soccer Club, located in Boston, hosted its 42nd Memorial Day Tournament which saw teams from the eastern United States, Canada, Mexico, South America and England taking part.
