AUTHOR'S PREFACE This history has been appearing serially through the Lindsaj "Watchman-Warder" for the past eleven months and is now issued in book form for the first time. The occasion for its preparation is, of course, the one hundredth anniversary of the opening up of Victoria county. Its chief purposes are four in number: — (1) to place on record the local details of pioneer life that are fast passing into oblivion; (2) to instruct the present generation of school-children in the ori- gins and development of the social system in which they live; (3) to show that the form which our county's development has taken has been largely determined by physiographical, racial, social, and economic forces; and (4) to demonstrate how we may, after a scien- tific study of these forces, plan for the evolution of a higher eco- nomic and social order. The difficulties of the work have been prodigious. A Victoria County Historical Society, formed twenty years ago for a similar purpose, found the field so sterile that it disbanded, leaving no re- cords behind. Under such circumstances, I have had to dig deep.

  • Manitoba Provincial Mixed History
Manitoba Provincial Men’s History Year of First Provincial Men’s Championship: 1925 Format: From 1925 to 1958 teams played a straight knockout format. This was played in conjunction with the MCA Bonspiel. In some years as many as 64 teams qualified. Exceptions to this included 1930 to 1932 where the MCA Bonspiel Grand Aggregate Winner was declared Provincial Champion. In 1949 a round robin format was used with 12 teams. In 1959 the current format of a maximum of 32 teams was started, however if a team qualified twice the numbers were reduced accordingly. In 1965, minimum 32 teams became the yearly number to compete. There have been various types of draws used to declare the champions over the years. In 1995, the 8 team qualifier was introduced and in 2003 the Final Four or Page Playoff was introduced. • 150 Notable Manitoba Curling Teams
150 NOTABLE MANITOBA CURLING TEAMS In honour of Manitoba’s 150 th Anniversary, the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame and Museum has undertaken to identify 150 teams which played a significant role in creating (in the early years) and extending (in more recent times) Manitoba’s reputation for competitive excellence in the world of curling. Our list acknowledges teams from all competitive sectors from the high-profile junior and men’s and women’s teams to less well-known teams at the mixed, senior, and masters levels and even outside the association realm in the deaf, police and postal championship realms. All of these successful teams played roles in establishing Manitoba’s well-deserved reputation. We also acknowledge recent successes in the new discipline of Mixed Doubles but this historical perspective is focussed on the traditional four-person game. INVITATION TO THE PUBLIC TO ADD TO THE LIST: A total of 150 teams were identified initially. Subsequently two missed teams have been added so the list now includes 152 teams. There are many other teams across Manitoba’s curling history which also belong on a listing of this nature. Manitoba curling fans are invited to suggest other teams for inclusion. In most cases, the teams are included on this list on the basis of the team’s on-ice success in a single outstanding year OR across a series of years. In the latter case, we have acknowledged that so long as three people remained on a team from a previous recorded success – then it was still the same team.

Tunnel Town Curling Club 1720 - 56 Street Delta, BC V4L 2B1 Phone 604-943-9219 TUNNEL TOWN CURLING CLUB LIFE MEMBERS Tunnel Town Curling Club has, to date, inducted ten members as Honorary Life Members for their contributions to the club and the game of curling. A brief biography of each of them follows: NAME: JUNE FRANKLIN YEAR INDUCTED: 2018 EDUCATION: Stenography Leeds High School Leeds, England Accounting Remington Accounting Leeds, England CURLING CLUB MEMBERSHIPS: Tunnel Town Curling Club Delta, B.C. 1967 - PRESENT BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: June Firth was born in the city of Leeds, Yorkshire County, England. She emigrated with her family to Rocky Mountain House in Alberta Canada in 1947, but the family returned to England after spending one winter in Canada. June returned to school in Leeds and completed her high school at the age of 16. She took a job with a local company who, in response to her request, agreed to send her for accountant training. When June's father died at a young age, she talked her mother into again emigrating to Canada, but this time to Burnaby BC. However, once again they were homesick for England, and returned after only a few months in Canada. After returning to Leeds in 1957, June obtained a position in the accounting department of sewing machine factory there. She married Ron Franklin, who worked as sewing machine technician, at the same factory, in 1959. It covers the period from shortly after the intro- duction of anesthesia until modern times. We have attempted to provide an exhaustive compilation of available data, so that a repos- itory of information will exist for future medical historians. We have also attempted to make the book an enjoyable reading experi- ence for the average individual interested in medical history, in part by telling anecdotes about many of the people who had a role in this history. The book is divided into two parts. The first chapters describe the development of anesthesia in Oregon from different perspec- tives. These include the early period, the advent of anesthesiologists and the Oregon Society of Anesthesiology (OSA), the complete development of anesthesia delivered by nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), dental anesthesia, examples of types of anesthesia practice, and a historical perspective of Oregon anesthesiology, including brief biographical sketches of some early pioneers and some of the more influential anesthesiologists in the state.

Issue 1 – Saturday, March 2, 2013 • An Official Publication of the Canadian Curling Association. Ol’ Bear, Ol’ Beer, Ol’ Broom Alberta’s Kevin Martin, Ontario’s Glenn Howard and Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton. This trio has dominated Brier play for the past two decades and are the faves this week in Edmonton again. MIKE BURNS/CCA Page 2 2013 Tim Hortons Brier – Tankard Times Can the Bear protect his den? BY JIM MORRIS The Heart Chart The Old Bear is waiting in his den. Kevin Martin, a world and Olympic champion, wants to make history in his home town at this week’s Tim Hortons Brier. The man nicknamed The Old Bear is clawing to become the first skip to win five Brier titles. Doing it in his own back- yard would make it extra sweet. Martin and his rink of third John Morris, second Marc Ken- nedy and lead Ben Hebert rode a home-town advantage when they won the 2009 Olympic trials in Edmonton. They went on to win the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancou- ver. “That was awesome,” said Martin, eyes shining at the mem- ory. “The energy of the crowd is really something when you are the home team. “At the Brier . everybody is wearing their provincial col- ours. It’s just going to be a hoot.” The only other skips with four Brier wins are Randy Ferbey and Ernie Richardson. A field of 11 other teams will be laying traps from Mar- tin. Among the rinks hunting bear at this year’s competition, which begins Saturday at Rexall Place, will be Ontario’s Glenn Howard, the defending Brier and world champion who is mak- ing his record 15th appearance at the Canadian men’s curling championship; Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton, the 2011 Brier and world champion; Brad Gushue of Newfoundland/Labrador, the 2006 Olympic gold medallist; and Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard, the 2006 Brier champion.
