And although it’s essential that we teach to the head, (yes...Algebra does matter!) we’re leaving a lot on the table, if we don’t start by teaching to the heart.

The Complete YouTube Guide to Building Connection Quickly (CYG for short) is a resource that will help you connect with your students in a language they understand.

Everything from music playlists, to funny YouTube clips, to inspiring messages (even a few personal videos from Joe). The CYG puts them all in one place so you don’t have to spend hours of your time searching.

Some of the funny videos, music suggestions, and inspiring messages might not be suitable for all ages.

For instance, an inspiring video that talks about how a youth was able to escape the Sex Trafficking scene... although empowering and courageous….might open a whole can of worms for a group of 2nd graders that you’re not willing to dive into.

We have done our best to indicate which age(s) we believe each idea is most appropriate for, however, teacher discretion is advised.

Every morning, we suggest queuing up 2-3 songs on your laptop or your phone (if you have the ability to connect to a bluetooth speaker). When the first kiddos walk into your classroom...hit play.

In 2016, I was hired to speak in a High School right outside of Minneapolis.

Like normal, as the students were walking in, the energy in the room was charged! Music playing, videos on the screen, and just tons of smiles from the kiddos.

However, on this occasion I decided to do something that I had never tried before. Weave in an inspirational video. (see the Everyone Dies but Nobody Lives link below)

I had no idea how they would react. Cheesy? Lame? “This is the guy that I’m going to have to listen to for the next 45 mins?”

I closed one eye, crossed my fingers and hit the “forward” button on the PowerPoint remote…

20 sec’s later, I look up, and EVERY eye was fixed on that screen. When it was finished, they cheered.

Not only did they love it, they wanted more of it!

Contrary to popular belief, youth LOVE inspirational videos. Obviously they have to be done well, but assuming that’s the case, you’ll be able to lead a lengthy and healthy discussion on a myriad of topics afterwards.

Here’s the bottom line…

At the beginning of every “lesson” we have a precious few minutes to Interrupt the “noise” in our students’ heads (and there is A LOT of noise) and to connect with them on a human level.

I believe if we do this, ”true learning” has a chance.

When you can engage your students in the first 5 min’s of class on something non-academic... • Engagement will improve • Hearts will be opened • And learning will increase! The CYG is a tool that will help you build connection quickly.
