Stanton The subject of social class has been insufficiently studied in contemporary French and Francophone women authors’ writing. With the exception of Annie Ernaux’s work, women authors’ portrayal of social class is often overlooked in favor of studies that focus solely on women’s subjectivity or autobiographical narrative, ignoring critique of social inequalities. Out of Home: Social Class in Women’s Writing 1950 – 2016 employs an intersectional feminist and critical race theory methodology to examine social class in relation to gendered and racial subjugations in the work of selected French and francophone women authors across diverse regions. The cartography of the dissertation consists first of hexagonal France, with an examination of Annie Ernaux’s texts; second, in the opening two chapters, the colonial societies of French Indonesia and Algeria as depicted by narrators in the position of colonizers; third, in the last two chapters, post- colonial or settler societies of Guadeloupian and Québécois texts, featuring colonized or marginalized viewpoints. The conclusion returns briefly to hexagonal France, then opens to a more globalized perspective. This study focuses on social class and inequality, marginalization, and home and exile; as such, it is fundamentally concerned with questions of exclusion and inclusion. My analysis affirms textual mechanisms of iv exclusion and elision in regards to class, race, and gender. Often, the texts studied depict the ways in which these subjugations reinforce one another. Out of Home reveals social class to be mutable rather than static, and associated with home and a sense of self, appearing in conjunction with inequalities of race and gender. Characters might experience social class as mutable, that is, they can move into a higher social class, but struggle with feeling “out of place,” “between classes,” or “out of home.” I conclude that, as portrayed, contemporary society has reactivated inequalities present in colonial societies, whether in Guadeloupian novels’ portrayal of hierarchies of race or women narrators’ inability to seize agency in novels of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. These themes are associated with the question of exclusion: who is excluded, who is included, and who is marginalized, both in these texts and in the societies portrayed. From the post-World War II period to the present day, women writers from the former French colonial empire – French Indonesia, French Algeria, enslaved Guadeloupe (now a département), and the French settlement in Canada (Québec) – portray social class, in various ways, as associated with home. As a place of belonging, identity, security, and most importantly inclusion and exclusion, home emerges in these texts as intimately associated with mechanisms that maintain hierarchies or indifference to others’ lives and identities.1 My cartography consists of the following: first, hexagonal France in this introduction with an examination of Annie Ernaux’s texts, which depict social class associated with home. Second, in the opening two chapters, I shift to the colonial societies of French Indonesia and Algeria as depicted by narrators in the position of colonizers. In the last two chapters, the focus changes to post-colonial or settler societies and to Guadeloupian and Québécois texts featuring colonized or marginalized viewpoints. The conclusion returns briefly to hexagonal France, and opens to a more globalized perspective. Sparked by the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Stanford, Florida, and Zimmerman’s acquittal as well as the police killings of other black men and women, including Michael Brown, Rekia Boyd, and Freddie Gray, this movement challenges police violence and other policing that makes black communities unsafe as well as social constructions of black people as inherently dangerous and criminal. Police violence against black people and the interrelated criminalization of black communities have a long history, older than the US itself. There is a similarly long and important history of activism and social movements against police violence and criminalization. Today, black people are disproportionately subject to police surveillance and violence, arrest, and incarceration. So, too, are other people of color (both men and women) and queer, trans, and gender nonconforming people of all races but especially those of color. This course will examine the history of policing and criminalization of black, queer, and trans people and communities and related anti-racist, feminist, and queer/trans activism.     Jon's Mini-codiums and More 2016 I want to thank all of the people that ordered bulbs from me last year. This was my first time getting orders filled and it was a learning experience. After many years of drought conditions in California, it finally rained. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we had ample amounts of rain. My daffodils were very happy. My earliest daffodils (fall flowering species such as N. virdiflorus, N. miniatus, and N. serotinus, and fall flowering bulbocodiums bloomed.) started blooming in October 2015. More fall bloomers flowered (fall blooming cultivars, tazettas, bulbocodiums which included N. cantabricus, N. romieuxii, and Division 10 cultivars) in November and December. Many of the late winter / early spring bloomers (particularly the miniatures in Division 1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12) grew vigorously and bloomed during the months of January through early March. The season was going to be early again. During the end of February and first week of March, I was in Arizona on vacation (went to baseball spring training), and upon our return home, it stormed and noticed that most of the miniatures that were coming Spring Serenade into bloom were ravaged by the heavy winds, rain, 5 Y-Y and pests. A few days before the Northern California Daffodil Chapter’s Murphys Show (on March 19 and 20), I was able to bring a small number of miniatures to the show. The next week, I was able to bring many of my late flowering miniatures to the Fortuna Show. Nancy and Jerry Wilson attended the show.

Apparently this is the penultimate Mr. Monk book. Goldberg uses Monk's long-suffering assistant, Natalie as the narrator of his books. Unlike most expanded universe tie-in books, he calls back characters and events from previous books and TV episodes, weaves a decent mystery and moves the g I'm a sucker for these books. This is probably the part I most enjoy. The book begins with a fun mystery an excerpt of which was published as a short in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and shortlisted for an Edgar Award. Things aren't going well. Well, they are, sort of. Apparently hired in part because of a reputation as a competent, but ridiculous cop, the folks who hired him didn't count on how personable, earnest and hard-working Disher is or his uncanny ability to literally stumble into mysteries. Disher found and reported rampant, years-long corruption in the Summit city government. This lead to the resignation of the mayor and most of the town council.

    Annette Michelson’s contribution to art and film criticism over the last three decades has been un- paralleled. This volume honors Michelson’s unique C AMERA OBSCURA, CAMERA LUCIDA ALLEN AND TURVEY [EDS.] LUCIDA CAMERA OBSCURA, AMERA legacy with original essays by some of the many film FILM FILM scholars influenced by her work.
