Turntablism refers to the use of turntables as musical instruments, essentially to alter and manipulate the sound of recorded music. Audio art refers to the arrangement of excerpts of musical selections, fragments of recorded speech, and ‘found sounds’ in unusual and original ways. The following paper outlines past and current difficulties in regulating these newer genres of music. It reports on an examination of programs from 22 community and campus stations across Canada. Given the abstract, experimental, and diverse nature of these programs, it may be difficult to incorporate them into the CRTC’s current music categories and the current MAPL system for Canadian Content. Nonetheless, turntablism and audio art reflect the diversity of Canada’s artistic community.

    "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

Whether it is bringing down dynamics for a classic fade out or a filter sweep slowly building into a chorus, dynamic activity in a song has always been pleasing to the average music listeners. The process that makes these mixing techniques possible is automation. Before I get into details about automation in regards to mixing I will explain common ways automation is used. Automation in a nutshell is the use of various techniques, method, and system of operating or controlling a process by highly automatic means generally through electronic devices. In music however, automation is simply the use of a combination of multiple control devices to alter parameters in real time while a mix is being played.

Since they were taken over by Sony however, you’re not going to get far with that link. Where you should really go is to http://www.sonymediasoftware.com where you can click on ‘software’ and then ‘ACID’ - taking you to precisely the right place. Sony are now the company which manufacture and develop Acid, and at the time of writing this article they are on version 6. Acid Pro 6. Now, Sony will let you download a free trial, to get your fix, but you should really take the plunge and purchase this masterpiece. If you’re serious about music production – and in particular bootlegs and mash-ups, then it’s worth forking out the $374.96 that they’re charging on the site. Following that, you can relax in the knowledge that you own a monster package for making your tunes. 2 OK, it’s installed. What now? After all the downloading, purchasing and installing gubbins – which you should be able to work out yourself (after all this isn’t a lesson on downloading software or installing such stuff) we can move on to the intro. With the rise of DAW- based composition in popular music styles, many artists’ sole experience of musical creation is through the computer screen. I assert that the particular sonic visualizations of the DAW propagate certain assumptions about music, influencing aesthetics and adding new visually- based parameters to the creative process. I believe many of these new parameters are greatly indebted to the visual structures, interactional dictates and standardizations (such as the office metaphor depicted by operating systems such as Apple’s OS and Microsoft’s Windows) of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Whether manipulating text, video or audio, a user’s interaction with the GUI is usually structured in the same manner—clicking on windows, icons and menus with a mouse-driven cursor.     Hooked on an Affect: Detroit Techno and Dystopian Digital Culture Feature Article Richard Pope Ryerson University Abstract Detroit techno is typically historicized as having grown out of the late 1970s and early 1980s middle-class, consumerist, and aspirational high school social party scene, giving the impression that Detroit techno artists created forward-thinking music as a means to acquire subcultural capital and (re)produce their identities. In this essay, this position is nuanced for a more complex understanding of techno’s relation to the quotidian phenomenological encounter with the dystopian setting of Detroit. Concomitantly, predominant theorizations of affect within the humanities, which emphasize the utopian, hopeful dimensions of affect’s inherent productivity, are supplemented for an understanding of productive energy revolving around affects of dystopia and on a certain hopelessness which scholars, in the years ahead, will increasingly have to negotiate. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This dissertation explores the idea of electronica as a descendent of electronic dance music, which, although embodying many related aesthetic qualities, operates within a different set of musical values. This needs to be understood in the context of how dance music's character, form and modes of performance relate to its specific cultural function. Repetitive beats (as espoused by house and techno in particular) comprise part of the cultural experience of rave. In combination with drug technologies and an ethos of collectivity, rave encapsulates a set of political phenomena that are entrenched within the formal and textural priorities of dance music. I discuss how modes of reception are affected by changes in these priorities, and to what extent post-dance music neglects the physicality that defines the political dimension of dance music's relationship to the body.

    chapter 1 Turntable Jr. In August 2001, the last episode of the Bozo’s Circus television show was aired on WGN in Chicago. Though the show had been a staple of local Chicago television for forty years and over seven thousand episodes, the final WGN broadcast received national press coverage that hailed Bozo as the longest-running children’s television character in America, seen at one time on stations from coast to coast. Bozo’s television debut had been in Los Angeles in 1949, and in his heyday there were Bozos on the air in most major American cities, as well as in Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, and Greece. Among the many performers who played Bozo on local TV stations were Muppets creator Jim Henson and NBC weatherman Wil- lard Scott, who went on to be the first television Ronald McDonald—a figure who borrowed much of his visual style from Bozo.1 Sadly, Bozo’s reign as juggernaut of postwar children’s television was coming to an end by the 1990s, the victim of competition from cable stations such as Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. The last Bozo broadcast in Chi- cago marked the end of an era and drew a variety of local celebrities, including Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan, who performed a version of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.” There was another music industry personality in the WGN studio that day, one who was probably not recognized by many in the audi- ence: Alan Livingston, a former Capitol Records executive. Best known as the man who signed both Frank Sinatra and the Beatles to his label, Livingston had another legacy, one that inspired the Saturday Evening 13 14 | Spoken Word Post to write in 1955 that he had “pioneered a branch of show business” that was earning twenty million dollars a year and had even influenced American educational theories.

There has been experimental use of turntables as musical instruments since their invention, but the use is now mainly ascribed to the musical genre hip-hop and the playing style known as scratching. Scratching has developed to become a skillful instrument-playing practice with complex musical output performed by DJs. The impact on popular music culture has been significant, and for many, the DJ set-up of turntables and a mixer is now a natural instru- ment choice for undertaking a creative music activity. Six papers are included in this thesis, where the first three approach the acoustics and performance of scratching, and the second three approach scratch modeling and the DJ interface. Additional studies included here expand on the scope of the papers. For the acoustics and performance studies, DJs were recorded playing both demonstrations of standard performance techniques, and expressive perfor- mances on sensor-equipped instruments.
