Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters Book Review the Sea Of Óli Gunnar Jötunheimar Enska Percy Jackson and the sea of monsters book review The Sea of Monsters is a fantasy adventure novel based on Greek mythology and is written by Rick Riordan. It is the second novel in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and was well received selling more than one million copies total. The title of the book suggests that the story will take place at sea where monsters live. The story is set in present day America and is about the 13 year old demigod Percy Jackson and his friends Annabeth and Tyson. They must go on a quest to rescue their friend Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Cyclops Polyphemus to save camp half-blood from being destroyed by monsters and titans. On their quest many people and monsters will try to stop them from succeeding by any means necessary. The main characters are Percy who is the brave hero of the story and the son Poseidon, Tyson a Cyclops who is often made fun of and treated differently and Annabeth the smartest of them three and the daughter of Athena. The author describes the characters really well so you get a pretty good image of how they look like. The characters get well developed and you start to care for them and see the world from their perspective throughout the book. The book touches upon how hard it is to be a half-blood, always being hunted down by monsters and never knowing one of your parent’s. The message of the book is that you should not judge others based on looks. One scene that caught my attention was when Percy is turned into a guinea pig. My favorite character in the book is Tyson because he is so funny. I think the book is grate and I really recommend it for reading to everyone who likes fantasy and adventure, but you need to have read the book that came before it (The Lightning Thief). Otherwise you would not understand anything that is going on in the book. .

  • 02 “Not Hungry Anymore,” Tyson Murmured
0 ONE MY BEST FRIEND SHOPS FOR A WEDDING DRESS My nightmare started like this. I was standing on a deserted street in some little beach town. It was the middle of the night. A storm was blowing. Wind and rain ripped at the palm trees along the sidewalk. Pink and yellow stucco buildings lined the street, their windows boarded up. A block away, past a line of hibiscus bushes, the ocean churned. Florida, I thought. Though I wasn’t sure how I knew that. I’d never been to Florida. Then I heard hooves clattering against the pavement. I turned and saw my friend Grover running for his life. Yeah, I said hooves. Grover is a satyr. From the waist up, he looks like a typical gangly teenager with a peach-fuzz goatee and a bad case of acne. He walks with a strange limp, but unless you happen to catch him without his pants on (which I don’t recommend), you’d never know there was anything un-human about him. Baggy jeans and fake feet hide the fact that he’s got furry hindquarters and hooves. Grover had been my best friend in sixth grade. He’d gone on this adventure with me and a girl named Annabeth to save the world, but I hadn’t seen him since last July, when he set off alone on a dangerous quest—a quest no satyr had ever returned from. Anyway, in my dream, Grover was hauling goat tail, holding his human shoes in his hands the way he does when he needs to move fast.

  • Disabilities in Rick Riordan's Greek and Roman Retellings
DISABLED HEROES: DISABILITIES IN RICK RIORDAN'S GREEK AND ROMAN RETELLINGS Katelyn Balkum A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2020 Committee: Kristen Rudisill, Advisor Esther Clinton Katherine Lynn Meizel © 2020 Katelyn Balkum All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Kristen Rudisill, Advisor Rick Riordan's middle-grade novels have been studied for the introduction of antiquities to young readers but not for the inclusion of characters with disabilities and diverse backgrounds. This project explores Riordan's use of disabilities in his Greek and Roman mythology retelling series and argues that while Riordan’s use of disabilities is positive overall, his narrative still falls into the negative effects of the supercrip narrative. These series feature demigods who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia because of their status as a half-god and half-mortal children. Also, other characters in the series use disabilities to hid their mythical creature features from the mortal world around them. References to the disabilities were pulled through a targeted keyword search about the disabilities or a character. The use of the learning disabilities for the demigods create an explanation for the disabilities that cause both disabilities to become nothing more than superpower abilities that the demigods have. This thesis analyzed reference to the disabilities that were pulled through a target keyword search for the disabilities and relevant characters. Adaptational references were pulled from the adaptations of the series from the films and musical. Also, other characters in the series use disabilities to hide their mythical creature features from the mortal world around them.

A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. August, 2009. 62 pages. Advisor: Brian Sturm. This study examines the function of ancient gods in modern children’s literature. Latent content analysis was used to determine the roles gods play in Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Five roles were identified: helper, opponent, manipulator, enabler, and beneficiary. The gods were found to embody intangible concepts, raise the level of the action and increase the mortals’ own powers, and ultimately prove the power and importance of humanity.
