Media release 27.09.2016 Historic achievement for Butterflying: piano music by Elena Kats-Chernin (ABC Classics/UMA): first album of contemporary classical music by an Australian woman composer to reach no. 1 on ARIA Classical Charts. Performed by 2015 ARIA Award-winner Tamara-Anna Cislowska and the composer herself, Butterflying is the first major survey of the piano music of Elena Kats-Chernin. Opening at no.2 on the ARIA Core Classical Charts, this double disc of piano music solo and four hands has enjoyed 13 weeks in the top 10 (8 of those at no.2) until this week’s breakthrough to the prized no.1 position. Featuring 14 world premiere recordings, this double-disc collaboration between these two leading Australian artists was described by Limelight magazine as “a true dream team” and accorded ‘Editor’s Choice’ in its August 2016 issue. Says Kats-Chernin: “This is my largest collection of music so far. I write with the idea of talking to someone one-to-one and Butterflying includes a lot of different conversations. I'm so happy that people are listening in such numbers!” Born in Uzbekistan, Kats-Chernin is now regarded as one of the world’s foremost contemporary composers, writing music for the leading opera, ballet, and theatre companies and festivals. Her music has a rare ability to touch millions, with her music featuring at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup. She has received many prizes (such as ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best composition’) from the Helpmann, Limelight, Sounds Australian, Sydney Theatre Awards and an Individual Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award. -

Butterflying: the music of Elena Kats-Chernin Friday 1 July 6pm, Salon Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre ARTISTS Tamara-Anna Cislowska, piano Elena Kats-Chernin, piano PROGRAM ELENA KATS-CHERNIN (b.1957) Butterflying For Richard Dance of the Paper Umbrellas Vocalise Eliza Aria Russian Rag Remembering Białystok Homecoming ABOUT THE MUSIC Butterflying My inspiration for this music was flying in one’s dreams, trying never to touch the ground. Originally written for the 2003 Rugby World Cup opening ceremony in a version for full orchestra. For Richard Written in memory of the talented young violinist Richard Pollett. The melodic material was derived from the letters of his name, each allocated a particular pitch. Dance of the Paper Umbrellas This work was composed for a HUSH CD project. After visiting the leukemia ward at the Royal Children’s Hospital, witnessing the wonderful work of Dr Catherine Crock and her team, I wanted to create a piece from the world of magic and dreams, a cake adorned with multi-coloured umbrellas that suddenly begin to dance and twirl on their own! Vocalise One my larger works for piano solo, commissioned in 2011 by the Mental Health Institute in Melbourne. The 'Vocalise' title is here unsung and refers, rather, to a voice or voices within, sometimes comforting and warm, at other times distorted and threatening. Eliza Aria Originally part of the ballet Wild Swans choreographed by Meryl Tankard for the Australian Ballet (2002), the piece introduces Princess Eliza and expresses her pure soul, innocence and faith in the good of the world. Russian Rag: I was inspired by William Bolcom’s rags to write something slightly nostalgic and with wistful-sounding harmonies. -

It resulted in a score rich with a wide range of musical sources underscoring a tableaux of dance and images beautifully evocative of the tale. The work was premiered by the Australian Ballet at the Sydney Opera House on 29 April 2003. This paper looks at the unexpected journey that one of the musical movements from the work entitled “Eliza Aria” undertook as a consequence of the information communication technology revolution in the early twenty-first century and web 2.0 potential for user generated content.
