OVERVIEW OF THE IDCCA ONLINE “QUICK POLL”

On April 15, 2019, the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association began an online survey asking respondents to offer their preferences for Democratic candidates for the 2020 Presidential nomination and their preferred candidate to serve as Vice President.

This online survey asked three questions: 1. Who is your choice to be the 2020 Democratic Nominee for President? 2. Who is your choice for Vice President on the 2020 Democratic ticket? 3. What region of Illinois do you live?

A total of 27 candidates were offered as choices in this survey. These 27 were either announced or believed to be possible candidates at the time turning the online survey live. At least two candidates (Tim Ryan and ) announced their candidacies during the process of this survey.

Participants were also provided the option to submit a write-in preference for the Presidential slot and/or the Vice Presidential slot. Few write-in candidates received more than 1 to 2 votes, though some respondents did write in names of candidates already listed. Among the write-ins not listed in the survey, none are candidates or potential candidates.

To submit a “complete” survey, participants were asked to provide a valid email address. All respondents’ submissions were recorded and are reported here, regardless how many questions were completed and even if no valid email address was provided. No submissions were rejected or adjusted. Missing answers are considered “partial” responses. The overwhelming majority of partial responses were those who declined to submit an email address.

The promotion of this survey included both paid advertisements and organic sharing. Paid promotions set parameters that included only zip codes within the state of Illinois. However, social media sharing expanded the reach of the survey throughout the nation. Roughly 7% of respondents reported their location outside the State of Illinois.

At the close of the survey, on May 6, 2019, more than 7100 online respondents submitted their answers. With 1,742 online votes, U.S. Senator won the survey, earning a total of 27.2% of the total responses. The second highest vote-getter was South Bend, IN with 1,479 preferences for a total of 23.1% of the whole.

Buttigieg maintained a lead for Vice President, with 16% of the total vote for VP preferences. Two women held second place showings for VP, Senator with 872 votes (14%) and with 871 votes (14%).

The IDCCA does not claim that this survey meets any standards of scientific polling methodology. The survey does, however, provide anecdotal information about the familiarity that respondents have with some candidates and the ability for some candidates / supporters to organize online.
