Funeral services will be held Monday morning at nine o'clock at St. John church. The rev. Theodore Verbeten will be in charge of the service. Interment will ake place in the Catholic cemetery. Good Afternoon My name is ADRIANNA JANSSEN. I was born in Oss Holland May 26, 1852 I came to Little Chute with my Parents Arnold & Joanna Strick when I was 4 yr. old We lived on Wilson St near the railroad. I would have 5 younger brothers & sisters. Being from the same town I would meet and begin courtship with Martin Jansen even though there was 12 years difference in age. I turned 17 four days before I Married Martin. We were married at St John Catholic Church in Little Chute by Father Verberk. We live on a farm for 7 years before moving into Little Chute when my husband got a job in a mill. Our home was on Buchanan Street. We had 20 Children. The 8th child, Henry, would die as a very young infant. The 10th child Johnny would die of diphtheria at age two. The other 18 were healthy and lived to provide much happiness and comfort to me. My children are Georgianna , Theodore, Arnold, Elizabeth, William, George, Peter, Henry, Martin, Johnny, John, Patrenella, Katherine, Henrietta, Mary, Adrianna, Henry, Johanna, Josephine, and Arthur. When the crowd was at home we used ½ bushel of potatoes at a meal, 12 to 14 loaves of bread each day and 800 pounds of pork plus 600 pounds of beef a year. I would like to have those meals again because I would have lots of good company and lots of help from the children. When the children were at home, my mother spun the yarn for their stockings and mittens, and I would sit up at night until 11:00 o'clock to keep up with my knitting. For their clothing, I bought cloth at the stores and made their clothing myself. I never had any trouble with my house work because the children always helped me. With the aid of the boys who stayed at home until they were 21, we never had any trouble supporting the family. My husband died of pneumonia on April 13, 1915 at the age of 62. He was laid to rest here. Our youngest child was only 6 yrs. at the time and 10 of the children were under the age of twenty. I was 51 yrs. at the time. By the time I was 63 yrs. I had 87 direct descendants including 18 children, the youngest 18 yrs. and the oldest 44 yrs. 62 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. I am confined to a wheelchair now. I can't work like I used to but my children do the house work for me. I would enjoy having the children about me again and to be able to clothe and feed them again. I enjoyed the good neighbors. We used to go to dances and parties and always had a good time. Although there is a streak of gray here and there in my hair and I am not as active as I once was on account of the almost superhuman work I had to do in raising 20 children, a friend said that is how I retain my youthful sparkle of eye and alertness of mind. I died in July of 1930 at the age of 65. Little Chute Historical Society Cemetery Walk 2012

Kaukauna Times March 12, 1925 Old Settler Reviews Past Born in Hollandtown and Lived on the Same Farm for Sixty Years One of the most interesting men it has ever been our pleasure to talk to and a citizen whom Kaukauna can be proud to call its own is the title which may be justly claimed by George Vanderheiden Sr., 210 Division street. It was our pleasant duty to be assignedSample to the duty of interviewing Mr. Vanderheiden and to say that we enjoyed our hour's visit with the gentleman is putting it mildly. Seventy-three yeas of age and with a mind as clear as a lad of eighteen makes it possible for Mr. Vanderheiden to recall incidents spanning a stretch of sixty-five years and the gentleman also possesses the knack of holding his listener's interest. Upon being told that in view of the fact that he was one of the oldest settlers in this part of the country the Legion Edition desired a sketch of his life Mr. Vanderheiden very gladly consented and began as follows: "I was born on May 26, 1852, in what is now Hollandtown and spent my entire life, until I came to Kaukauna thirteen years ago, on the same farm which was my Jun 22 2015 Page 20

birthplace. My father came to this country in 1850 from the province of North Braband, Holland, and was at the time a married man with six children. I was the youngest son and was born two years after my father came to claim this new and then wild country as his home. "Schooling I had very little, in fact there were no schools near Hollandtown until about the time when I reached by ninth birthday when the first public school was erected, with a Mr. Mike Finerty as the first teacher. "Perhaps, either because the people of the district were too poor to do otherwise the school term was limited to four months in the winter at which between fifteen and twenty pupils registered. The first school was of course a log building, logs unhewed, and the inside of the building was sheated with lumber. As I mentioned before the first teacher was a Mr. Finerty but a lady teacher, a Miss Eliza Plunkett, was later engaged. My brother, Peter, who is the only brother of mine living, and is at present at Green Bay, and I attended the school. "I lived on the same farm, as I told you before, sixty years or until the time when I came to Kaukauna. The old farm or homestead consisted of one hundred and sixty acres cut through by a main road, 72 acres of the total acreage of the farm being on the east side of the road. Father sold eight acres of the land east of the road and on this land it was where the present village of Hollandtown was started. A Mr. Van Vreede started the first blacksmith shop and he was followed in the business by Mr. Van Lieshout, local car dealer's dad. Later on a wagon maker, a Mr. Gerrits by name, began operations and some time later the first general store was opened up. A Tom Fox built a saloon but gave up the business after a time and then in the building was housed Hollandtown's first postoffice. The mail was brought to Wrightstown on the old C. & N. W. and was carried once a week to our little postoffice. "The old C. & N. W. railroad at that time extended only as far north as Green Bay but in the winter of 1871-72 was built as far as Oconto. "As a youngster I always did a lot of walking and when I later reached the working age I walked, in search of employment in the lumber camps, as far north as Menominee and even further. On Sunday night, October 10th, Peshtigo, then the lumbering center, was burned to the ground. Chicago, by the way, was also burned the same night. A young man, whom father had working for him, and I walked to Peshtigo to see the ruins, arriving in the town on Tuesday. We remained there ten days helping to clear up the ruins and rendering aid wherever possible. Only one building remained through the ravages of the fire, this structure being a frame building located in the market place. This house or store, or whatever it was, was on posts and while the fire burned the sawdust which covered the ground underneath it, did no damage to the structure other than scorch it badly. We slept in the building during our stay in Peshtigo. So intense was the heat of the fire that the logs in the booms were burned flat to the water's surface. From Peshtigo we walked north in an effort to find the end of the burned area but gave it up after waling 90 miles along the Menominee river beyond Menominee. We walked through wilderness and the highest trees that we saw had not escaped the ravages of the flames. We stopped, during our walk at lumber camps at night and were given food and an assigned to a bunk for the night. Very good treatment was accorded to us all along the way. We came back to Oconto and hired our for work at a lumber camp and were forced to walk another 58 miles to reach the place of employment. We worked there that winter and in the spring after reaching Oconto on foot we were able to ride back to Wrightstown, the C. & N. W. having as I mentioned above, been extended that winter. The fares were, of course, very high. 5 cents a mile being the charge. I have always enjoyed walking, thought nothing of traveling long distanced on foot and more than once hoofed my way home and kept for spending money that cash which I would have otherwise have spent for fare, for riding. "Frank Hagemeister, who was the first member of the Hagemeister Company, at one time had several meat markets in Green Bay. I worked for him for seven years. Mr. Hagemeister bought cattle and one or twice a week would come to Hollandtown for that purpose. He also bought cattle southward toward Sherwood, Brotherstown, New Holstein being his stopping point southward. My brother and I would accompany him on these trips. On the way toward New Holstein Mr. Hagemeister bought cattle and it was our duty to pick up and drive back those droves of stock. We thought nothing of making this trip then driving the stock to Green Bay where our employer had his stockyards and farm. After having dinner we were given fate with which to pay our way back to Wrightstown. Instead we pocketed the money and hoofed our way back to De Pere. There we would stop at a combination restaurant and saloon where after refreshing ourselves with beer or whiskey at the small sum of three cents a glass walked back to Wrightstown and then back to our home in Hollandtown. We also drove cattle once or twice a week to Appleton for a cattle buyer by the name of Peterson and we thought nothing of making that trip in a day. "Coming back again to my earlier days at Hollandtown. The Rev. Father Vanden Broek first celebrated Mass in the little log church in the village. Fr. Vanden Broek was located at Little Chute but after celebrating services in that village on a Sunday morning would start for our church on foot and on arrival would celebrate mass for the faithful fathered there. Following the first named Reverend the Rev. Father Spierings was assigned the our congregation then the Rev. Fathers Hentz, Luitclaar, DeGoey, LaMege, DeLau, Fakken, Vandenelsen, Van Houtigan and the present Father Van Oeffel." "I was married, the Rev. Father Fakken performing the ceremony, to Mary Biese at Hollandtown on January 13, 1880. Our marriage was blessed with nine children, four boys and five girls." . iii Johann H Biese, b. After a prolonged illness of dropsy, the venerable Mrs. John Verstegen, of Little Chute, died on Wednesday last (16 MAY 1884) aged 60 years. The deceased was one of the early settlers of Little Chute, coming here with her late husband as early as 1847 or 1848 with a large colony from Holland. She was a woman of decided force of character, and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends for her agreeableness and kindly nature. Her husband died several years ago, and it is safe to say that no old couple in that vicinity were held in warmer esteem than John Verstegen and his wife. The funeral will take place on this Saturday af ternoon (20 MAY 1884) at Little Chute. Her rest will be peaceful.
