  • Bob Dylan Wins Nobel Prize in Literature
Bob Dylan wins Nobel prize in literature For more than six decades he has remained a mythical force in music, his gravelly voice and poetic lyrics musing over war, heartbreak, betrayal, death and moral faithlessness in songs that brought beauty to life’s greatest tragedies. But Bob Dylan’s place as one of the world’s greatest artistic figures was elevated further on Thursday when he was named the surprise winner of the Nobel Price in literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. After the announcement, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Sara Danius, said it had “not been a difficult decision” and she hoped the academy would not be criticised for its choice. “We hoped the news would be received with joy, but you never know,” she said, comparing the songs of the American songwriter to the works of Homer and Sappho. “We’re really giving it to Bob Dylan as a great poet – that’s the reason we awarded him the prize. He’s a great poet in the great English tradition, stretching from Milton and Blake onwards. And he’s a very interesting traditionalist, in a highly original way. Not just the written tradition, but also the oral one; not just high literature, but also low literature.” Though Dylan is considered by many to be a musician, not a writer, Danius said the artistic reach of his lyrics and poetry could not be put in a single box. “I came to realise that we still read Homer and Sappho from ancient Greece, and they were writing 2,500 years ago,” she said.

And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Paul Kantner, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, Juan Gabriel, George Michael, Sharon Jones... the list goes on. And yet, while sad 2016 became a meme of its own, there is so much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall volume is up 3% over 2016, fueled by a 76% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. Nearly 650 solo artists, groups and collaborators appeared on the Top 200 Song Consumption chart in 2016, representing over 1,200 different songs. An inflatable pig flies above the crowd during Roger Waters’ closing performance. — AP/AFP photos ‘Donald Trump is a Pig’: Roger Waters on attack at mega-fest ocker Roger Waters savaged Donald Trump with a pig balloon caricature as he vowed to make the most of his Rplatform Sunday at a first-of-a-kind festival of rock eld- ers. The former Pink Floyd songwriter, who also renewed his longstanding criticism of Israel, closed out the first three-day weekend of Desert Trip which earlier brought the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney to the vast stage in the Southern California desert. As Waters played “Pigs (Three Different Ones),” Pink Floyd’s 1977 assault on power mongers, an over- size swine-like balloon floated into the crowd with a sketch on it of the Republican presidential candidate. “Ignorant, lying, racist, sexist,” ran the words on the bal- loon’s side, as overhead screens flashed inflammatory quotes by Trump including his boasts of groping women that were recently aired in an explosive video. Unflattering drawings of Trump-in one he is naked with a miniscule member and in another he androgynously has developed breasts-also appeared on screens before the message in bold letters: “Donald Trump is a Pig.” Waters drove home the point with a notch more subtlety as he performed Pink Floyd’s classic “Another Brick in the Wall,” bringing to stage a troupe of singing teenagers, mostly ethnic minorities, who wore T-shirts Roger Daltrey and The Who perform during the third day of the Desert Trip music festival.

  • Unofficial-Archive-V
[email protected] Version 3 for Thrasher’s Wheat 2 April 2018 FOREWORD This document attempts to provide as complete a catalogue as possible of songs written or performed by Neil Young which do not appear on his officially released material and media. “Official” in this case means released through an authorized record company. The catalogue will therefore include much material which has already been released on unofficial bootleg media or other non-commercial recordings. It also includes a listing of unreleased songs performed by Neil Young which were written by other artists and which may therefore have been released on their officially released media. As far as I know, it is the most comprehensive 0 listing of its kind, though the publication of further official Neil Young Archive material can at any time change its accuracy. Many entries here will presumably automatically become part of his “officially released material”, and I will try to update what will (hopefully!) become an ever shorter document as time goes on. I am making this information available in the public domain for Neil’s fans. It has always been intended for it to be a “community venture”, a kind of Neilopedia, and I invite everyone to join in with feedback, input, corrections, suggestions and of course new content. If for any reason you make use of it in publications of any kind, please do give me a credit, just as I have tried to give credit to those sources I have drawn upon. It is good for the ego! Please let me know if you know of any other sources which I can include or cooperate with in future.
