Back then, Kevin Eastman and BEGINNING Peter Laird shared a workspace they dubbed “Mirage Studios.” The name alluded to the fact that there was no actual studio, just a shared area they used to draw in. One night, in an effort to one-up each other creating ridiculous ideas, the two stumbled upon the concept of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” From those unlikely beginnings sprang a pop-culture phenomenon that quickly rose to worldwide fame. Now, thirty years after the Turtles first emerged from the sewers, Turtlemania is still going strong. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate this momentous anniversary than by revisiting some of the Turtle universes, and the artistic teams behind them, that have so greatly contributed to the phenomenon. 1 Ad for the first issue, 1984.
