Utes make it official: co-head coach By Dan Rasmussen Deseret News

Published: Thursday, July 23, 2009 9:47 p.m. MDT Exactly a quarter century ago, Megan Marsden started helping her husband, Greg, coach Utah's gymnastics team a year into their marriage. From the beginning, Greg Marsden, who's guided the Utes to 10 national championships in 34 years with the program, viewed his working relationship with Megan as a partnership. And as Megan took on more and more responsibility over the past 10 years to help Utah remain competitive in the national landscape, Greg believed more and more that his wife should be named as his co-head coach. Accordingly, he began to petition Ute athletic director Chris Hill for that to happen a few years ago, and after mulling it over for a while, Hill agreed to make Megan the co-head coach of Utah gymnastics, a move that the announced Thursday morning. "For her, it's something that she deserves — to have the title to go along with what she's doing," said Greg, 58. "I appreciate Dr. Hill's willingness to think outside the box a little bit. I know what took a little while is that he's not real comfortable with this idea of co-coaches. So I appreciate his willingness to go outside his comfort zone a little bit and give her the title that I think she more than deserves to have." While Greg said he believes he's had a partnership with Megan since they starting working together 25 years ago, Megan said it took her time initially to learn the ropes from her husband Over time, however,Megan said she believes it truly has grown into a partnership, with each person assuming an individual set of responsibilities, particularly in the last decade. "I think some of our strengths and weaknesses balance each other nicely," said Megan, 47. "That's part of why we've divided some things out the way that we have more in recent years, and it's also been a necessity on some levels." Aside from the fact that Megan will now report directly to Dr. Hill, both Greg and Megan said Thursday's announcement largely won't affect the way the program is run. But they quickly noted they were grateful that the University will be officially recognizing their working partnership "I think it probably doesn't change a lot about the way we go about things, but I do appreciate that Chris Hill and the administration felt like I was deserving of that equal position," said Megan. "That feels good that they define Greg and I as a team." Thursday's announcement prompted obvious thought about whether it was a step toward Megan, who's 47-years-old, eventually replacing Greg, who's 58-years-old, but the hugely successful coach said he has no plans to retire. "That's really off in the distance," he said. "That has nothing to do with why we're doing this. We're doing this right now only because I've been talking to Dr. Hill about it for a few years and this is the time that he became comfortable with it.

"Obviously," added Greg, "there's gonna be a day sometime down the road when I'm gonna be done, but I love what I'm doing. I've got a boy who's gonna be a senior at East this year, and he's going to the U. the following year. He's already talked to (Ute basketball coach) Jim Boylen and he's gonna be a manager for the basketball team, and he's excited about that. (But) he's not gonna have a scholarship, so I need to work to pay his way to college. "I don't really see the end in sight right now."

Utah gymnastics: Marsden has new, old role Utah gymnastics » Co-head coach has been helping husband for 25 years. By Lya Wodraska The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune Updated:01/14/2010 05:18:57 PM MST

Utah's Greg and Megan Marsden have always viewed their coaching of Utah's gymnastics team as a partnership. Now Megan finally has a title to show it. Megan, a former gymnast who married Greg and joined the staff in 1985 as an assistant coach, was promoted to co-head coach in the offseason. The move was one Greg Marsden has wanted for several years. Finally, Utah athletic director Chris Hill relented. Hill had balked at the promotion in the past because he doesn't like using co-coaches in general. However, Megan's increased involvement in the program became too much to overlook and he finally heeded Greg's request. "To me, it has been a partnership for 25 years," Greg Marsden said. "As time has gone on, she has accepted more and more of a burden and taken things off my plate, which has allowed me to work on other things. To me, giving her the title was making things how it should be." As the head coach for 35 years, Greg Marsden is one of the most well-known gymnastics coaches in the country and often gets credit for the sport's popularity. However, what many might not know are the roles Megan plays, for which Greg hopes she'll get acknowledgement with the new title. Greg oversees the vault and tumbling and keeps an eye on the uneven bars and spends much of his time developing the team's public exposure through the Internet or other media. Megan primarily coaches the balance beam, takes care of the leap and dance requirements and handles most of the community relations. Megan said she knew Greg wanted the promotion for her but brushed off any differences it makes to her. "It won't change the way we operate," she said. "I still have my areas I'm in charge of and he doesn't really mess with me and let's me take care of them. But when it comes to really critical decisions, he'll be the one to make the final decision like he always has. That is fine with me." However, the change does offer a glimpse of the demands on coaches in smaller sports. Without a massive marketing or technical department at his disposal, Greg Marsden has taken it upon himself to develop the team's public exposure through the Internet. Web sites, blogs, Facebook and Twitter take up more and more of his time. Giving Megan an equal title is important so she can take on more responsibilities to allow him to continue to devote more time to those venues, he said. "She is much better at the community stuff than I am and I've been doing more of the online stuff," he said. "It has been a gradual thing, over the last 10 years, but the responsibilities of the program really are divided between us." Other than seeing Megan handling more of the media demands, fans probably won't notice much of a change, Megan said. "It's nice to have the title, but no one is going to notice a thing," she said. "Really, I don't know why we would change a thing because what we have going has been working pretty well." Utah Utes gymnastics notebook: Stephanie McAllister not letting injuries contain her

By Linda Hamilton Deseret News Published: Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 8:02 p.m. MST Stephanie McAllister had such a "bizarre preseason" — in the words of Utah gymnastics coach Greg Marsden — that many athletes in her situation would not have been ready to compete yet, said co-coach Megan Marsden. But the sophomore from Indianapolis — who endured a concussion, two kidney infections and an ankle sprain in preseason and who still has kidney stones — has competed in all four meets so far. And she was even ready when unexpectedly called upon last Friday at Washington to go all-around for the first time in her career. "The way it worked out wasn't like I expected, but I was happy that I got the chance to do everything," said McAllister, who was scheduled to do three events but learned she would be vaulting in place of senior Annie DiLuzio just prior to the timed warm-up. "Greg said, 'You're in.'

"And I said, 'OK,' " she said. The vaulting springboard at Washington was softer than those the Utes usually use, and with DiLuzio doing a difficult Yurchenko 1 1/2, "She just was freaked out a little bit, and it wasn't worth not having her in a good place (mentally) and getting her hurt when we had other people ready to go," said Marsden. So, in the second event of the night, McAllister got the call and scored 9.75 with her first vault of the season. "It was good," she said. "I'm glad that I got the opportunity, but I really wasn't expecting it. I was the alternate, and alternates, they're always supposed to be ready, but I wasn't expecting that." In her first all-around, McAllister totaled 39.10. "I was just pumped," she said. "It didn't make me tired. I just tried to do one thing at a time. "I just had to think of one event at a time." The experience should help her. "I have been kind of inconsistent this year, struggling with getting back into everything. It was definitely a confidence booster for me because I know that I can do it, it's just a mental thing." McAllister said the preseason was frustrating "because I knew I wasn't doing everything to my full potential because there was always something (another setback), but I just kept making progress.

"But in Seattle, I just felt confident that I was ready for everything, so it just all worked out the way I wanted." "I think she's doing an incredible job," said Megan Marsden. "I'm just really impressed that she's coming along as quickly as she is." Megan Marsden said McAllister has been a joy to coach because she listens well, makes adjustments that are suggested, remembers them in the next practice and is able to then add further changes. "I

feel like she cares, and she trusts we coaches, and I feel like she's listening and trying to absorb and address some of her weaknesses," Megan said. BOARD GAMES: Utah used to carry its own vault board on trips but hasn't for a couple of years. Among other things, it costs $175 to fly it each way, said Greg Marsden, adding he could about buy a new board for that. In Seattle, the board was soft, but no one diagnosed the problem until it was time to perform. Then, inserting an extra spring did the trick. "We've got to use that open warm-up time more effectively to pick up things like that," Marsden said, about competing on the road. Utah is at Arizona State Friday at 7:30 p.m. MT, and some of this week's practice time will be devoted to that sort of awareness and to making the Utes more ready to compete in an environment where they must manufacture their own excitement. Marsden said Utah was "flat" in its performance at Washington, a 195.85-194.65 victory. RANKINGS: Utah fell to fourth in the rankings this week with a 195.956 average. The Utes rank No. 2 on balance beam behind Alabama with a 48.994 average. Ute Daria Bijak is the highest all-arounder, ranked 14th at 39.15 with SUU's Elise Wheeler 16th (39.144) and Ute Kyndal Robarts 17th (39.133). Robarts ranks sixth on vault (9.881), and DiLuzio is tied for fourth on floor (9.894). Women's Gymnastics Rankings Team. . .Average. . .High score 1. Alabama. . .196.494. . .197.450 2. Utah gymnastics: Utah's Deetscreek model of consistency The senior set a school record last season by completing 64 straight routines without falling. By Lya Wodraska The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune Updated:02/05/2010 08:39:32 AM MST

Daria Bijak was the anointed star coming into the 2010 season, Kyndal Robarts was the next big thing and Jamie Deetscreek was ... oh yes her, the senior whose steady performances benefit the team but can get her lost in the hoopla surrounding her teammates on Utah's gymnastics team. But always she is there in her teammates' shadow, pushing them to do better out of fear they'll be caught by her. "She is right behind them," Utah coach Greg Marsden said after one recent meet. He corrected himself when he glanced at the stat sheet again. "Actually, she is right there." Deetscreek is best known for her consistency after setting a school record by completing 64 consecutive routines without a fall last season. At times she is easy to overlook because she rarely makes a major mistake and her performances aren't eye-catchingly powerful like Bijak's nor full of pep as some of her other teammates, but this season she is distinguishing herself in her own ways. She leads the team with five wins this year, giving her seven for her career. She also won the all-around against Iowa State with a 39.425. "Her improvement with us has been unbelievable," Utah co-head coach Megan Marsden said. "On bars and beam, she is as good as it gets, she can hang with anybody on those events." By her own standards, Deetscreek rated her performances this year as just "good." "There have been some areas I want to work on and I get discouraged in," she said. "Sometimes I make a big deal about little mistakes and get mad about them, but when I look back I realize I actually had a pretty good meet." That tendency to self-criticize has served her well in her progression at Utah. Deetscreek was a relatively unheralded gymnast when she came to Utah when compared to the usual steady influx of national team members and Olympians the Utes recruit. She qualified for the Junior Olympics in 2002 and 2004, but was at the elite level only in 2003. However, her progress has been extremely steady throughout her career, making her latest improvement almost expected instead of a surprise. After competing in four routines as a freshman, she was a steady contributor on the balance beam in 2008. Last year she earned the team's Most Improved Gymnast award, as she regularly contributed as an all-around competitor and earned All-America honors on the balance beam. While others brought the big scores, she brought the consistency the Utes have always coveted. "I don't know if we are ever willing to give up consistency," Megan Marsden said. "In college gymnastics, that is the name of the game. Very often you have to be consistent, then in time the big scores come." The big scores seem to be coming for Deetscreek. "I've been practicing hard and it's finally showing in meets," she said. Utah Utes gymnastics: Annie DiLuzio studies up to find her happy place

By Linda Hamilton Deseret News Published: Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 9:56 p.m. MST SALT LAKE CITY — Senior Ute gymnast Annie DiLuzio studies the videos of herself competing, and, like any athlete, she's always finding things she wants to fix. But when one of the main things her coaches want her to work on is just smiling during her routines, well, that's got to say a lot for "Doozie's" progress. "I always tell the girls that if we start working on facial expressions, we're down to the little things, and that means you've really fixed the judge-able things," said Utah co-coach Megan Marsden. "When it comes down to facial expression, that's performing for an audience. "When Annie looks happy on the competitive floor, I think it helps her. "When she's determined, her look is an unhappy look, so we have to change that so she looks happy a lot of the time so it's not misconstrued." That's especially important on floor exercise, said Marsden, noting that DiLuzio is using fairly dramatic music that doesn't induce easy smiles. "I'm pretty intense when I do it," said DiLuzio. "I don't usually smile, but I've been working on it. Everyone has something that's hard for them, and that's one of my things. If I get into the music, then I don't really want to smile, but it's getting there." DiLuzio has great reason to smile all week this week after her performance Friday in fourth-ranked Utah's 196.475-195.70 win at Arizona State. After starting the preseason determined to solidify a place in Utah's balance beam lineup, and doing so immediately, she made the exhibition lineup on uneven bars Friday. That meant she did routines in all four events. Even if it didn't count as an official all-around, that's what it was to her — the first time since she was in high school that she performed all four events in one meet. She did one bar routine at Utah State a couple of years ago, but she sat out of other events then, so this was a big step. "It felt good because that's what I've been trying to do for so long, and to accomplish it. I'm really happy, really proud that I could do that," she said. Bars has always been the most difficult event for DiLuzio, a two-time U.S. team member who was seventh all-around in the 2005 U.S. Championships. The event became a near impossibility for her after an elbow injury as a freshman — she's battled a stress fracture in a shin for a couple of years, too — but she has long toyed with the idea of someday getting back into the bars lineup. Friday, one judge gave her bars set a 9.80, and the other gave her 9.45, leaving her puzzled but ecstatic to see any score for herself in that event. "I probably just got a little nervous and changed (the routine) in the meet, but I was happy. It was a success," she said.

She had 9.875s in each of the other three events, so she'd have totaled 39.25 in the all-around had her bars not been in exhibition. That's higher than the high scores of some gymnasts ranked in the nation's top 25 this week. In two events, the Byers Gymnastics product from Folsom, Calif., is tied for seventh in the rankings -- on beam, with an average of 9.84, and on floor, with a 9.89 average. The beam ranking is a triumph for DiLuzio, who had never been consistently in that lineup until this year. "She made a commitment to approach her training differently on that event," said a "proud" Marsden, who has seen DiLuzio go from lots of misses on beam in practice to being able to do hour after hour on the beam in the gym without falling. "You have to 'bank' a lot of those types of workouts to build your confidence so that in the decisive moment, you can do your routine. You have to really up your standards, and I think she did that." "I really wanted to be on beam this year," DiLuzio explained. "I didn't want to be a two-event girl. I am good at it if I set my mind to it, and I finally had enough of being put on the side." What's changed is that she now has a mental trigger before performing each skill on beam, something she tells herself to "give my mind things to think about so it doesn't wander," she said. Now, she's down to learning how to smile during routines, and she tells herself to learn to enjoy it all. "Learn to have fun out there," she said, "because the season is flying by. It's crazy it's almost over, senior year, so just have fun with every routine. Still be intense, still get the job done, but at the same time, enjoy what I'm doing."

Utah Utes gymnastics: Cortni Beers celebrates her 9.9

By Linda Hamilton Deseret News Published: Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 8:02 p.m. MST When she was a freshman gymnast last year at the University of Utah, Cortni Beers felt burned out after an elite career. For the 2009 Utes, she did bars (9.175) and beam (9.70) in the season opener — and never competed again. In 2010, despite spraining an ankle the day before the Utes left for their first meet, Beers has been a regular on bars and beam. She upped her career high on beam to 9.80 vs. Georgia, but her other eight scores this season in those two events had been 9.75 or less. So imagine how big a step she took last Friday, imagine her surprise, when she landed after bars and saw 9.90 on the scoreboard. "Oh my gosh, so amazing," Beers said at Monday's practice. "I was like, 'Oh my gosh, is that really my score? 9.90? That can't be my score.' " But it was, and for the first time in her Ute career, she was an event winner, tied with senior teammate Jamie Deetscreek. "I was just focusing on what I'd been working on, our mental choreography and hitting the handstands. I think hitting the handstands was what did it for me," said Beers. After the meet, coach Greg Marsden had praise. "She's getting stronger and more confident as the year goes on. I'm really pleased with her progress," he said. "She didn't have confidence last year, and it was something you could see growing. She's getting sharper and cleaner and more aggressive." Beers went into this week's practice with, "Just a better feeling, knowing that I can help out the team that much. I think just this year in general, me helping out has helped me realize that I do belong here." The two-time U.S. national team member from Tulsa said watching from the sidelines last season probably kindled her fire to compete again after that elite career. "I was just so tired of everything. Maybe not performing is what made me realize I really did want to be out there again," she said. She admits she didn't know the next step, didn't know how to get herself restarted. She never thought about quitting, but "I knew I had a lot of work to do to get to where the rest of my team was," she said. Spending the summer in the Ute gym with teammates "in a no-pressure situation" made a gradual change, and once she got her spirit back, it was time to work on the body. She lost weight and came into fall camp with the tools she needed. It all just kind of happened. I'm not complaining," Beers said, laughing. When she sprained the ankle, Marsden had her concentrate this year on the events that do less pounding, bars and beam, and that's fine with her. "Yeah, I like that. It's a nice beginning," she said.

Ute co-coach Megan Marsden said the one problem with Beers' beam is in her leap combination that gives her .3 bonus. It's a leap followed by a ring jump, in which she must look straight up into the arena lights. She had a wobble on it Friday. "In her defense, it's a very difficult thing," said Megan, adding a change might be made if another .3 bonus skill can be found to fit into the routine. FAMILIARITY: Megan Marsden said Beers made mental progress the last two meets, able to shut out the worries of performing before her two former coaches from Krafft Academy in Tulsa. At Arizona State, Jean Luc Carrion is now a Sun Devil assistant, and Friday night, Kristi Krafft was one of the

judges — in the two events in which Beers does not compete. "That added some pressure for her I think," Marsden said. "I felt like she handled both weeks very well with some good MC (mental choreography) ... to help calm her nerves. That's helping her confidence. She can see that she can have some control in difficult situations." RANKINGS: Utah dropped to fifth from fourth, averaging 196.088, just behind Florida (196.117). It competes Friday at No. 16 Michigan. Southern Utah ranks 19th at 194.85. SUU's Elise Wheeler is the top all-arounder in the state this week, averaging 39.20 for 15th. Utah's best is No. 19 Deetscreek (39.125). Utes senior Annie DiLuzio is tied for third on floor at 9.90, and junior Kyndal Robarts is tied for third on vault (9.892) with SUU's Melissa Johnson tied for ninth (9.875). Utah Utes gymnastics: Utes just trying to relax, enjoy the ride

By Linda Hamilton For the Deseret News Published: Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:37 p.m. MST SALT LAKE CITY — Last Friday, when Daria Bijak told her teammates prior to the floor exercise to just relax and enjoy every minute they have in Utah gymnastics, it not only motivated the team to pound out its best floor score (49.425) and meet total (196.575) of the season.

It also struck a chord with fellow senior Annie DiLuzio (9.95 floor score that night, to go with her 9.95 vault). So don't be surprised if she is trying to take in the whole experience again Friday night at 7 when the ninth-ranked Utes play host to No. 8 Oregon State, No. 18 Penn State and No. 21 Southern Utah on Short People Appreciation Night (those under 5- foot-2 are admitted free).

"Before floor, Daria came over and said, 'Just enjoy it. We only have three more of these in the Huntsman Center,' " DiLuzio said at practice this week. "And that just kind of got to me, and, 'Oh, man, I need to really enjoy myself,' and I did. I feel like that helped. It goes by so fast. We're almost done, and it feels like we almost started."

DiLuzio said that former teammates had told her the same thing, but it really hit home last week.

"I've been trying to do that for most of the year," she said. "People that are done, they kind of warn you — 'Oh, enjoy every moment, It goes fast.'

"You kind of hear it but not take it all in, but it flies by, and there's not going to be any more gymnastics. I've got to take in everything."

She says it seems to suit this Ute team when it can convince itself to be relaxed.

"Keeping our eyes focused on what we need to do is the main thing, and trying to have fun with it," DiLuzio said. "This team does better with a light atmosphere, just kind of joking around but still getting the job done."

Bijak — who was sick last week, which helped her relax even more — has been sick all this week as well with stomach disorders. She also has an ulcer, and doctors did a 'scope on her Wednesday and prescribed medication to calm her down, said coach Greg Marsden.

He said she's been feeling weak and unable to eat well, so he doesn't know how much she will be able to do in the quad meet. He worries most about the fatiguing floor exercise and said he might have to replace Bijak with freshman Meg Whitney.

Senior Beth Rizzo's torn toe tendon is mending, and she may be able to vault, and freshman Kate Mohr may also return to the vault lineup after back soreness. Junior Gael Mackie is almost ready to return on bars after an ankle sprain.

With the four-ring-circus atmosphere of a quad meet, it may be a little more difficult for the Utes to relax this meet. But that's kind of the point, too. Marsden schedules a quad meet each year as a kind of rehearsal for the postseason, to get everybody used to the chaos.

This year, he happened to schedule three other teams that are quite competitive.

Oregon State ranks ahead of Utah and is 10-2 with a high score of 196.925, better than Utah's high, and two strong all- arounders in Mandi Rodriguez (39.55 high) and Makala Stambaugh (39.50), which rival the career highs of Bijak and fellow senior Jamie Deetscreek. Penn State, 13-4, has a high of 196.725 and owns a win over Michigan, which beat Utah three weeks ago. Marsden assumes the Nittany Lions are better than their ranking because scoring in the northeast is typically lower than some other regions.

"Everything I've heard, and what little of Penn State I've seen on video on the Internet, they look like a very good team to me also," he said.

"Southern Utah, the last couple of years, has gotten significantly better," Marsden said. "They're a dangerous team, and if they get on a roll, they'll beat you, especially if you have any problems at all." http://www.deseretnews.com/article/print/700015964/Utah-Utes-gymnastics-Utes-just-trying-to-relax-enj... 3/12/2010 Utah Utes gymnastics: Utes just trying to relax, enjoy the ride | Deseret News Page 2 of 2

The T-Birds have a high of 195.425 and are led by Elise Wheeler (39.55).

It’s clear when you talk to Annie DiLuzio that her life has revolved around one thing: gymnastics.

Unlike many college athletes who have been dual- or even triple-sport athletes in high school, DiLuzio’s focus has been all flipping and tumbling.

DiLuzio has been involved with gymnastics since she was just a toddler, picking up the sport at age 2—something her parents hoped would burn off some of DiLuzio’s never-ending energy.

“I think I was just a really hyper kid and my mom needed to find something to put me in to channel all my energy so I didn’t get hurt trying to do flips off the couch,”

DiLuzio said. Mike Mangum Annie Diluzio has been involved with gymnastics since she was a toddler and started competing when she was 7 years Five years later, DiLuzio started doing gymnastics old. competitively and has been at it ever since.

“They couldn’t keep me out of the gym,” DiLuzio said. “I started competing when I was 7, and I love everything about gymnastics, so I just kept going. I just didn’t know it would take me this far, but looking back it’s been really cool.”

DiLuzio said gymnastics has been such a big part of her life that it feels strange when she isn’t competing.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and if I go a while without it, I don’t feel like myself,” she said. “I feel weird not being in the gym and flipping around.”

DiLuzio, like most of her teammates, gave up having a normal childhood to participate in gymnastics instead, something DiLuzio said has been well worth it. Despite missing her junior prom and other high school activities, DiLuzio said she wouldn’t change a thing.

“In a sense, I gave up stuff, but for me it was worth it,” she said. “It’s just the little stuff like some football games in high school. I missed prom because I was competing in Belgium, and that was OK with me because that is what I had been working for. There is always time to do fun stuff later.”

For DiLuzio those sacrifices have paid off, as she has become an integral part of the Red Rocks’ lineup, boasting some of the stronger performances in the country on the vault and floor.

Utah co-head coach Megan Marsden said despite DiLuzio’s skills, she is sometimes still shy

about her talent and abilities in the gym.

“Her technique and twisting is second to none, and the average fan doesn’t recognize that but we as coaches appreciate that,” Marsden said. “In spite of the fact that she is so accomplished, she acts afraid a lot of times when she does a big skill, but I think for Annie that is just a little bit of a cover. She doesn’t want a lot of attention so she pushes it away.”

Despite her shyness, DiLuzio has the ability to impress not only fans and judges but also her teammates.

“Sometimes I’m really impressed because if she can’t work out because of an injury Monday and Tuesday, all she does is cardio and goes in Friday night and gets the highest score,” Daria Bijak said. “I’m amazed how good she is, that she doesn’t even need to practice.”

With her gymnastics career drawing to a close, DiLuzio is trying to come to grips with letting go something that has been a huge part of her life.

“It’s weird that I’m almost done,” she said. “I’m kind of getting a little scared like, ‘Oh my gosh, what am I going to do? I’m going to be normal, almost. It’s weird.”

DiLuzio, who is majoring in behavioral science and health with minors in psychology and health education, still has a year left of school and plans on staying with the Red Rocks as a student coach.

“I think that will be good and will help with my transition out of gymnastics,” DiLuzio said. “I love coaching and helping any way I can, so that might work as a transition into the normal world.”

DiLuzio spent time last summer coaching and said she hasn’t ruled out coaching as a possible career choice.

Marsden said the coach in DiLuzio is already coming out.

“She tends to kind of mother some of the girls,” Marsden said. “She recognizes when someone is struggling and takes them aside and has positive words. She is very good at picking out individuals that she can say just the right thing to help them. She is really good at that.”

Her teammates recognize DiLuzio’s ability to help others who might be struggling and attribute it to her fun-loving, easy-going attitude.

“Annie is a fun person—she can keep the atmosphere light,” Kyndal Robarts said. “Everybody loves Annie. We go to away meets and everyone knows her. She’s always happy and always lively, which is nice at the end of the season when we are all dragging.” Although DiLuzio said she’s thought about coaching, she isn’t focusing on her future right now. Instead she is trying to take in everything at her last few meets.

“I try and think about what I want to do with my life and when I’m done and it started freaking me out,” DiLuzio said. “So I’m just going to finish out the season and do what I love, and then focus more on the future. It’s scary leaving something that has been a huge part of my life.”

One thing about the future is clear for DiLuzio: She wants to try new things and find new hobbies to fill her time.

“I want to go skiing or snowboarding,” DiLuzio said. “I’ve never been able to because they didn’t want me to get hurt, so I want to try that, but I’m going to keep an open mind about what I want to try.”

Utah Utes gymnastics: Daria Bijak a key addition for Utah

By Linda Hamilton For the Deseret News Published: Thursday, April 8, 2010 11:49 p.m. MDT SALT LAKE CITY — Math's loss was a big gain for Ute gymnastics. Daria Bijak might have stayed home in Germany had she been able to figure out what math could have done for her. "I was going to go (to college) in Cologne, study math. I love math, and I'm really good at it, but I guess I didn't really know what to do with it because I didn't want to be a teacher," said Bijak. So — after having trained at Utah for a week in 2003 with her German national team as it prepared for the World Gymnastics Championships in Anaheim, Calif., and having kept in touch with Ute student manager Cameron Linford, now director of gymnastics operations — Bijak came to Utah in 2007. "When I finished (high) school in Germany, I did not have a whole lot of plans with what I wanted to do, and this just looked like it could be a great experience. I did not know what to expect. I just went for it," said Bijak. Bijak had supplemented her regular school classes by reading books and watching movies in English so she could communicate with friends she'd made in international gymnastics. And that made school in America easier and may have helped put her on a career path. She is now a senior who will compete one final time in the Huntsman Center on Saturday starting at 6 p.m. in the NCAA North Central Regional that is the gateway to the NCAA championships April 22-24 at Florida. Bijak, a 2008 Olympian and a member of two German World Championships teams, has tended to be at her best in NCAA postseason meets. In her final year, she's been more at peace with her gymnastics than ever before. "As we started this season, or even in preseason, I felt like I'm ready for this last year. As we started competing, and I started doing better, it just feels good, and it makes me happy where I am right now," said Bijak. She set her career all-around high of 39.575 on March 12 and followed it up with back-to-back 39.525s at Florida on March 19 and against BYU to close the regular season on March 26. In past postseasons, Bijak has twice recorded the highest score of anyone in the Utes' six-team preliminary sessions — on floor as a junior and on bars as a freshman — to help Utah qualify for the Super Six team championships. And she was all-around runner-up with a then-career-best 39.55 at the 2009 NCAA West Regional to help Utah qualify for nationals. Tenth-ranked Utah is seeded second in Saturday's regional, behind fourth-ranked and top regional seed Florida, so Bijak's best will be needed again for Utah to place in the top two Saturday and advance to nationals.

That inner calm will help. That's just the right term for it, she said. "I think I'm the most confident and the happiest I've been with what I've been doing, with my gymnastics," Bijak said. "Since it's coming to an end, there's nothing that I regret doing or that I haven't done. I'm in the best shape I can be. I'm doing the skills that I want to do. There's really nothing where I feel, 'Oh, I wish I would have done this, I wish I could do this.' I just do what I want to do now, and it's working out."

Bijak seems mentally ready for the end of her career and beginning of the rest of her life, even though she is as passionate as ever about gymnastics. "I just love to be out there. I love to swing around and try new things," she said. She relishes practice. Some days she doesn't feel well but has a good practice and surprises herself, and, "it really makes me happy, and it's cool. You can't predict it. Sometimes you feel good, and it doesn't work out, and you're like, 'Why?' And the other day you feel bad, and it's great, and you're like, 'Whoa, just go with it.' "That's what I love about it," Bijak said, growing more enthusiastic as she speaks. "I do think that she still very much enjoys the sport," said co-coach Megan Marsden. "I think that she loves what it feels like to do her gymnastics. I think that's remarkable at her age and with the number of years she's put in and the number of years she's put in at the highest level." When gymnastics is done, Bijak sees no problem shifting her focus. "I have so many interests, and I think if I find something that I develop passion for, the same way I have for gymnastics, I'll be successful in anything I choose to do," she said. "If I believe in it, and I really love it, then I can do anything I want." Bijak, 24, has another year of school, and she's hoping her film studies major leads to something better than what she could see in math. "I kind of started with that (passion) with my film projects that I do for my classes," she said. "I'm looking into internships with production studios, so anything in the film or movie business, I would love that," she said. "And I'm minoring in business because I'm really interested in marketing and all that stuff — so I hope that it all goes together somehow." She doesn't know whether she can or will stay in the U.S. after graduation. "Even if I got a job here, it's so hard to get a visa, so it's not just making the choice, 'Oh, I want to stay here,' or, 'I want to go home.' " Her boyfriend, Sasch Kiehne, a senior on the Weber State tennis team, is from Renningen, Germany. He has started toward his master's and will also be in Utah another year. His parents recently moved to Detroit, "so it's hard to plan. We'll just finish school and go from there. We can both stay here, or we can both go home," said Bijak. Utah Utes gymnastics: Trying to take pressure off

By Linda Hamilton For the Deseret News Published: Thursday, April 8, 2010 1:23 a.m. MDT SALT LAKE CITY — A Ute gymnastics team that has been feeling the pressure — especially the balance beamers — of being the lowest-ranked Utah team ever may have turned a corner Tuesday in its last hard practice before Saturday's 6 p.m., six-team NCAA North Central Regional meet at its own Huntsman Center. Utah also suffered another injury, though. Junior Jacq Johnson fell Tuesday after a vault and bruised her tailbone badly enough that she will miss the regional. Coach Greg Marsden said his 10th-ranked team has been tight, feeling the burden of trying to qualify for the 2010 NCAA championships — April 22-24 at Florida — just a little more than most Ute teams. In its previous 34 seasons, Utah has never not qualified for nationals. It is the only team to have qualified for every NCAA championship meet since that governing body took over from the AIAW in 1982. On Tuesday, Marsden had some straight talk for his team about the meaning of it all, and perhaps it helped. "We had a great beam workout," he said. "It's a work in progress. I feel like we had kind of a breakthrough (Tuesday). I feel like we're in a good place right now." Utah's vault (49.35), bars (49.425) and floor (49.40) squads are coming off their season-highs in the last meet of the regular season, but beam — where nerves are most evident — again saw two falls and a 48.85. And that score was that high only because Kyndal Robarts ended it with a career-high 9.925. Marsden told the beam team: "You guys are just so worried about failing you won't allow yourself to succeed. You're so fearful of making a mistake." "To me," he said, "it's them trying too hard rather than just relaxing and competing with confidence and competing like they train." He said he hopes his 35 years of experience counts for something and that he's learned that the sun still comes up the next day, and people get on with their lives no matter how the season ends. "If we have a good meet, we'll qualify. If we don't, we may not, but it's not as big a deal as everybody's trying to make you think it is," he told them. "It's true. That's what I have learned. "Whether we win the whole thing, or we don't even go, it's the same thing the next year. We've got to get up and get ready and do it all over again. Some of them will go on to the rest of their lives, and the rest of us will use that as a motivation to move forward."

Some beam routines have been altered in the past two weeks to make people more comfortable. Stephanie McAllister's combination has been changed. "We feel like her routine now is a routine she can do even on her worst day, and that gives her confidence," said co-coach/beam coach Megan Marsden. "And it gives me confidence that we've got someone starting off our beam that can get up and strut and hit their thing.

"And Daria (Biiak), we pulled the jump combination out. She had more things than she really needed, and there was one jump combination that was giving her fits, so we decided to just go without it." Just as Johnson goes down, sophomore all-arounder McAllister comes back from a shoulder injury and was "95-100 percent" Tuesday, said Greg Marsden. Also back from a lengthy injury is Gael Mackie on bars. Salt Lake freshman Fumina Kobayashi will be in the beam lineup for the second straight meet. Cortni Beers is scheduled for bars only. Her back began bothering her late last week. Utah will have to place in the top two Saturday to advance. Florida (ranked fourth) is the top seed in this regional. Utah is the second seed, Auburn third, Boise State fourth, Denver fifth and Washington sixth. "It's a tough region," said Greg Marsden. "All six teams are in the top 23, and I think they're all dangerous enough that if they're on that night and any of the teams have any problems, that they could move ahead of them. Utah gymnastics: Regionals format a hard sell Fan friendly? » Six teams competing means competitions will run long. By Lya Wodraska The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune Updated:04/08/2010 09:07:27 PM MDT

There are six gymnastics teams in town preparing for Saturday's NCAA Regional Gymnastics Competition. Well-informed fans are doing their own preparations, too -- for collegiate gymnastics' version of a marathon. With six teams competing, the event could well push the three-hour mark. That estimation takes into account Utah's experienced and quick crew working their hardest. Other sites unaccustomed to holding regional competitions could see their competitions last much longer because of scoring glitches and other issues that often arise. For even the most ardent gymnastics fans, the regional and national formats can be a test of their own endurance to watch because the events often run long. For fans attending Saturday's regional, there is some comfort in knowing Utah's experienced crew is running the meet and that the six teams competing are all ranked, which should make for some entertaining competition no matter which teams are on the floor and which are on byes. However, the longer format makes it a difficult one in which to attract new gymnastics fans to the sport, in Utah coach Greg Marsden's opinion, in what should be one of the showcase nights for the athletes since it is an NCAA event. "There are two things that save us to some degree," Marsden said. "One is what the kids are doing; they are amazing athletes, and those who come and see them are usually taken with them immediately. The second is the schools that are competing and moving on to the championships create that feeling and excitement level you want. But when you get beyond those things, it can be a hard sell." As of Thursday, 5,200 seats had been sold and the Utes expect a crowd somewhere between 6,000 to 8,000, which likely will be the highest attended regional given the popularity of gymnastics in the area. But that the Utes can't fill the Huntsman Center like they do for regular-season meets is an indication to Marsden the format needs to change to be more fan-friendly. Starting next season, the format for the NCAA Championships is changing so that only two teams advance from the preliminaries, making the night that is now known as the Super Six a four-team event. The format change is being implemented to make finals more fan- and TV-friendly, because it eliminates the byes. However, there is no easy solution for changing the regional format because coaches don't want to trim the number of teams that qualify for the six regionals. "People don't want to eliminate opportunities of participation and that has always been a difficult place to go for a majority of people," Marsden said. "But my thing has always been you can't predict what outcome would come from changes without trying." Marsden would like to see the regional format changed to one in which eight teams qualify for regionals, then separate four-team meets would be held on a Friday and a Saturday, with just the winner from each advancing to nationals. "From my perspective, it would be the best of all worlds, similar to basketball," he said. "You could get it down to an hour-and-45-minute or 2-hour event that is easy to follow." However, so far his ideas haven't enticed any coaches or NCAA officials to look at any changes for the immediate future, meaning fans and teams have to prepare for longer events. Florida already has some experience with the longer format since the seven-team SEC Championships took more than 31/2 hours, in coach Rhonda Faehn's estimation. "It's exhausting by the time you go through the warmups and competition, it's the longest meet of the year," she said.

"We've talked about if we added one more school we could do an east and west battle like football but until then I don't know how you accommodate everything." The most difficult part for the gymnasts is waiting through all the byes, senior Annie DiLuzio said. "There is a lot of waiting and standing around and the judging can be really slow," she said. "You just have to keep getting yourself pumped up for each event. That long of a meet, you can't stay pumped up the whole time." Relaxed Utah gymnasts relish underdog role Gymnastics » They're confident after landing their top beam score and making nationals. By Lya Wodraska The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune Updated:04/12/2010 06:09:26 PM MDT

As the fifth seed for the NCAA Championships, Utah's gymnastics team will be one of the underdogs. That role is just fine with the Utes. "The pressure is off since we're an underdog and hopefully we can go in and surprise some people," co-coach Megan Marsden said. "This group seems to do better when the expectations are off their shoulders a bit. That is the case for most teams, but we're going to stay with that approach. Just because we hit a meet doesn't mean we're suddenly going to change that. We need to put four events together again." The Utes (15-4) did catch what they feel is a break in the scheduling since they'll compete in the afternoon session of the championships, which start April 22 in Gainesville, Fla. They'll compete along with UCLA, Oklahoma, Oregon State, LSU and Nebraska. The Utes lost their season opener at UCLA and defeated Oregon State and Nebraska in the regular season. The evening session consists of second seed and host Florida, third-seed Alabama, sixth-seed Stanford, seventh seed Arkansas, 10th seed Missouri and 11th seed Michigan. The top three teams from each session advance to the Super Six on April 23. The last time the Utes were the fifth seed was in 2008, when they finished second. Competing in the afternoon would give the Utes more recovery time, provided they advance, before the championship night. "It's nice that you don't have to wait around all day waiting for the others to finish," senior Annie DiLuzio said. "When you're done you can rest up and get ready for the next day." The Utes received the same rotation for their NCAA preliminary competition as they had for the regional competition in which they opened on floor and finished on beam. Utah had its best showing on beam of the year, scoring a 49.35 en route to a 196.9. Florida won the meet with a 197.675. Qualifying for nationals and having their highest beam score has given the Utes another burst of confidence, they say. They no longer have to worry about being the team that ends Utah's streak of qualifying for nationals, and can now simply focus on the championships. "I've felt that weight all three years, but especially this year because people were doubting us so much," junior Kyndal Robarts said. "Now that big weight is off our shoulders." U. welcomes Mackie's return By Lya Wodraska The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune Updated:04/07/2010 12:48:40 AM MDT

Thanks to a severe ankle injury, Utah gymnast Gael Mackie probably won't compete on anything but the uneven bars for the rest of the season. At least she's making the best of her event. Mackie, who missed five meets because of the injury, scored a 9.775 on the uneven bars at Florida and earned a 9.9 against BYU. Those scores, particularly the 9.9., are the ones the Utes need if they are to be a contender in the post-season, which starts Saturday when they host an NCAA regional event. Uneven bars is one of the Utes' better events this season, but Mackie, a 2004 Canadian Olympian, is a gymnast not only capable of hitting but of earning the big scores, Utah co-coach Megan Marsden said. "She showed how important she is the other night when she goes in, not just first, but deep in the lineup and nails her routine and scores a 9.9," Marsden said. "If she can do that in the postseason, we need her there. That is where she's confident and where she can really help us." Mackie can give the Utes something else other than just a big score -- confidence. The veteran international competitor has been at her best in Utah's biggest meets, such as when she scored a 9.85 on the bars for the Utes in the Super Six last season and when she delivered a 9.775 in 2008 in the NCAA preliminaries. She entered her junior year hitting 42 of 47 routines and appeared to be finding her form this year when she suffered the injury. "I wasn't doing my best at the beginning of the season but things were turning around, floor was getting better and beam was getting better," Mackie said. "It kind of sucked, but injuries are part of sports so it motivated me in rehab." The injury prevented Mackie from practicing gymnastics but she at least could bike, which helped her cardio, she said. The rest of the rehab was more tedious, but she made the best of it. "I really focused on getting stronger and each week I wanted to get better," she said. "I worked on my arm strength and things like that [by] lifting." The Utes would love to have Mackie in the lineup on vault and floor as well, but it's doubtful she'll be healed in time to log enough training hours. Mackie isn't performing full beam or floor routines yet. "Vaulting is one place that is a maybe," Marsden said. "But it's a little too late on the others. We're just glad to have her on bars because she is so confident there." Mackie said her recovery goal was to be back in the lineup for the postseason. Now that it's here, she isn't satisfied with just being in the lineup. "I need to work on my handstands and things," she said. "I know I still have room for improvement."
