Greetings from SBA!
It seems like yesterday we were welcoming our students back for another year, and here we are wrapping up another school year. Your children, our students, have excelled in not only the classroom, but it the extracurriculars as well. We were honored to host Bishop David Talley on campus for our May Crowning and All-School Mass. Bishop Talley noted the motto on our gym wall, “Grounded in Faith. Elevated by Excellence.” in his homily and that is what SBA is all about. In partnership with you, we are preparing our students for life and most importantly, eternal life. We thank you for the trust you have placed in us for this most important time in your child’s life. We thank those who have partnered with us in the past as well as those who will be partnering with us in the future. We are blessed with an outstanding faculty composed of both religious and laity. The witness of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia is beyond words.

As we close out the 2018-19 year, we highlight the wonderful blessing our school, as well as all of Memphis, received with the naming and installation of our sixth Bishop, Bishop David P. Talley. Along with this news, we spotlight our 2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian and National Merit Finalist. These individuals have and will impact all our lives in such positive ways. They clearly are soaring Eagles!
I hope you enjoy this issue and it teases you a little for our Annual Report coming up in the fall which will include all the end of year awards, ceremonies and fun!

Greetings from the Advancement office. I hope you’re all enjoying the summer and excited about the coming school year. I know we are!
Thanks to many of you, 2018-2019 was a good year. “Tickets for Tuition,” our raffle for a free semester of tuition, generated more than $25,000. #iSupportSBA, our one-day fundraiser on the Global Day of Giving, topped the previous years’ mark. Our spring fundraiser, “Night at the Nest” tripled in size, and The Blessing Fund saw a modest increase in donations. It was a successful year, but one that leaves us plenty of room upon which to improve in 2019-2020.
Let me explain why we fundraise. Like other private schools, we fundraise to make up for the gaps that tuition dollars can’t address. The Blessing Fund helps us bridge those gaps and assists us in every aspect of school life from academics to athletics, the arts, activities, technology and facilities. Essentially, The Blessing Fund impacts every student at St.Benedict, in some way, every day.
The fact is, only 40% of our families contributed to our fundraising efforts this year. When I see that number, I see opportunity. We have an opportunity for tremendous financial growth, which will have an immediate impact in and around SBA, but we can’t do it without that other 60%. In order to further our mission, we rely on the support of our families, friends and benefactors. As we look to the future at St. Benedict, we need your assistance to reach the lofty goals that include continuing to provide the very best educational and spiritual experience for our children.

5 About Our Faith
FROM THE DEACON’S DESK
For those who are not as familiar, the Easter Vigil is that long Mass…that really, REALLY long Mass…at Easter. But, to those of us who are “in the know,” the Easter Vigil is a precious gem to the Church; an ancient and sacred liturgy filled with rich signs and symbols of our faith and most fully radiating the hope to be found in the Lord’s Resurrection. The blessing of the Paschal Candle by the deacon, the recounting of salvation history through the readings, the Easter lilies, the incense, the chanting and the singing all combine as a feast for the senses telling us in no uncertain terms, “He is risen!” But, for some, the Baptisms of new Christians and welcoming into Full Communion of those of other faiths is easily the highlight of the evening. And for our SBA family, this Easter Vigil was especially memorable.
This year, several members of the SBA community had been preparing to grow ever closer to the Lord and His Church through discernment, prayer and study culminating in receiving the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church at the Vigil. Senior Gabi Ray was Baptized, Confirmed and received her First Holy Communion. Sophomores Alexie Griffin and Ella Williams made their Profession of Faith, were Confirmed and received their First Holy Communion. These three young ladies received private as well as classroom instruction while here at SBA. Rachel Dressman (wife of our very own Coach Nick Dressman) attended RCIA classes this year at St. Louis Catholic Church which led her to a Profession of the Faith, Confirmation and First Communion as well. Even our Athletic Director, Will Hudgens, got in on the act. Will, a life-long Catholic, received his Confirmation to complete his Sacraments of Initiation.
Here at St. Benedict at Auburndale we take faith formation seriously – not just a “classroom” knowledge of faith, but the joys of a true and abiding faith in the Person of Jesus Christ. And we can see the fruits of that serious faith formation in the members of our SBA community who have sought to grow closer to God through their experience here on our campus. These five members of our family who are now receiving the fullness of God’s Divine Revelation in the Sacraments are just another example of who we are as a school, and why I am so blessed to be a part of SBA.
Congratulations to all those who participated in the Easter Vigil and received the Easter Sacraments, and may the Holy Spirit continue to make fruitful the important work of St. Benedict at Auburndale. May the blessings of this Easter season be yours and may the hope of the Resurrection always lead you closer to heaven.

Phillip Allen, 15, SBA freshman (Class Don Lear, 82, former Head Football of 2022) and brother of Cole Allen Coach and Dean of Students at SBA, (SBA Class of 2023), passed away on passed away on December 14, 2018. April 13, 2019. Coach Don Lear was one of the most revered and distinguished high school football coaches in the Memphis area. After 40 years of coaching in high school and college (He also coached at Memphis Catholic High School and Southwestern College (now Rhodes College.), Coach Lear retired from coaching in 1998 with a 132 high school Carla Bray, 57, mother of Kathleen (‘13) and Rachel Bray career wins. He also served in the athletic department and (’15), passed away on March 14, 2019. as a teacher, finishing his SBA career as Dean of Students and retiring from high school education in 2013. He built Chuck Ellis, 63, father of SBA English teacher Julie the St. Benedict Football Program when the Auburndale Vaughan, passed away on May 2, 2019. School was sold to the Diocese of Memphis in 1988. Coach Lear was head football coach in the school’s glory years Jack Griffin, 90, father-in-law of SBA teacher and coach advancing to post season action for six out of the 10 years Don Sebren, passed away on May 15, 2019. he headed the program. His 1996 squad was State Runner- up. He was named Best of the Preps Coach of the Year in 1994. In 1998, Coach Lear received the TSSAA Jake Heimerman, 34, graduate of Distinguished Service Award in recognition for the length SBA (2004) and brother of Tildon of his service, accomplishments and contributions to Haynes (2008) and Siler Haynes athletics at both the local and state levels. He was also (2009), passed away on November 1, honored by the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. 2018. Dr. Denis Lynch, 67, husband of former SBA Admissions Director Monica Lynch and father of Sydney Lynch Kellenberger (SBA ’98) and Shannon Lynch Maki (SBA ’01), passed away on May 24, 2019. Scott Hervey, 61, husband of SBA Golf and Tennis Coach Barbara Hervey and father of Sarah Hervey Wiles (SBA ’09) and Patrick Hervey James Munke, Sr., 51, father of Mandy Munke Moore (SBA ’11), passed away on May 15, 2019. (2007) & Jimmy Munke (2009), passed away on November 30, 2018.
Sadie Lisenby, 85, former Jasmine Sisson Stauffer, 26, Auburndale teacher and guidance graduate of SBA (2010), passed counselor for 14 years, passed away away on October 30, 2018. on April 12, 2019. “Miss Sadie,” as she was so fondly known, just recently retired from CBU, where she worked following her time at the Auburndale School.
Latarica Stripling, 32, sister of Tyraun Stripling (2018), passed away on April 25, 2019.

Bishop Talley – New Shepherd for the Diocese of Memphis and West Tennessee
On April 2, 2019, Bishop David P. Talley, M.S.W., J.C.D was installed as the sixth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis.
Bishop David Prescott Talley was born on September 11, 1950, in Columbus, Georgia. He was raised as a Southern Baptist but converted to Catholicism while a student at Auburn University. He was received into the Catholic Church at the age of 24 at Saint Mary Church, Opelika, Alabama. Family members of Bishop Talley remain faithful Baptists, including a brother who is a deacon. Noting that his background gives him a broad view, he has said, “I do know faith across the spectrum.”
After his studies at Auburn, he obtained a master’s degree in social work from the University of Georgia and worked as a case worker in Fulton County, Georgia, to protect children from abuse. He studied for the priesthood at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in Indiana and obtained a Master of Divinity degree in 1989.
Bishop Talley was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1989, at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta.
As a priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Bishop Talley served as a parochial vicar, administrator, and pastor of a number of parishes. From 1993 to 1998, Bishop Talley studied at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in canon law. Bishop Talley also served part-time in the archdiocesan Tribunal, as the Director of Vocations, and as Chancellor of the Archdiocese. In 2001, he was named a chaplain to His Holiness Saint John Paul II, with the tide of Monsignor.
One of his roles in the Atlanta Archdiocese was as chaplain to the disabilities ministry. He has said that his experience ministering among people with disabilities, which began at his first parish assignment, is key to his spiritual life. ”All they can do is ask the Lord for help. That simplicity and humility is where I think the church should be humble before God,” he said in an interview in 2013.
On December 17, 2012, while serving as pastor of Saint Brigid Church in Johns Creek, Georgia, Pope Benedict XVI named Msgr. Talley an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and he was ordained to the episcopacy on April 2, 2013. His episcopal motto is Dabo vobis cor novum, “He will give you a new heart.” Bishop Talley also served as vicar general of the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Director of Priest Personnel and was a member of the Council of Priests and the Committee for Ongoing Formation.
On September 21, 2016, Bishop Talley was appointed coadjutor bishop of Alexandria, Louisiana and became the twelfth Bishop of Alexandria on February 2, 2017, upon the retirement of Bishop Ronald P. Herzog.
On March 5, 2019, it was announced that His Holiness Pope Francis had named Bishop Talley as the sixth Bishop of Memphis.

2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Wyatt Ellis is the Valedictorian from the Class of 2019 with the highest GPA from the 187-member Class of 2019.
Wyatt is the son of Amy and Brian Ellis of Cordova. He is an Honors and AP student, scoring a 35 on the ACT. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction and will earn his Capstone Diploma this inaugural year of implementation. (St. Benedict is the only private school in Memphis and one of only eight in Tennessee offering Capstone diplomas). He is a National Merit Commended Student. Wyatt is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Science Honor Society, the National Spanish Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, Rho Kappa History Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society.
8 Wyatt is also a member of the Key Club and the Cross Country, Swimming and Water Polo teams, earning him the school’s prestigious Iron Eagle Award for 3-sport athletes. He has been a TSSAA Scholar Athlete for four years and is the SBA Senior Scholar Athlete.
Wyatt has been selected by his senior class as “Most Likely to Succeed.” Wyatt was recognized by the Germantown Exchange Club as Youth of the Month for April and recently received the Commercial Appeal Academic Achievement Award for all of the Metro area.
Wyatt has earned his Eagle Scout ranking and has 10 plus years in martial arts with Tennessee Karate Institute. He is a Black belt, 1st Degree.
Quincy Card is the Salutatorian from the St. Benedict at Auburndale High School Class of 2019. He has achieved the second highest cumulative GPA of his class of 187 students.
Quincy is the son of Jo Ann and Parker Card of Cordova. He is an Honors and AP student. Quincy scored a 32 on the ACT and is a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Latin Classical League, Rho Kappa History Honor Society, the National Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the Key Club service organization. Quincy is an AP Scholar (receiving a score of 3 or more on all AP exams as a junior) and will receive his Capstone Diploma this year.
Quincy was voted “Most Dedicated” by his senior classmates and performed in two SBA productions this year, “Kill Me Deadly” and “The Addams Family.”
Quincy is an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, serving as Master of Ceremonies for Masses and services, as he often did at SBA.
Quincy plans to attend Tennessee Tech University to major in Computer Science.
Abbie Verret is a 2018-19 National Merit Finalist
St. Benedict at Auburndale High School (SBA) is proud to announce that senior Abigail (Abbie) Verret has been selected a National Merit Finalist from the class of 2019. She has the opportunity to advance in the competition for one of 2,500 National Merit Scholarships. Abbie has a score of 34 on the ACT and a GPA 4.76.
Abbie is an AP (8-with scores of 4 & 5) and Honors (10) student in a rigorous course of study, excelling in math, science, drawing and creative writing. She is currently working on a novel. She has been selected for membership in the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. She is a member of the Key Club and French Club. Abbie is a gifted artist with works appearing in art shows and has had a presence on the SBA stage, performing in multiple productions. As active and studious as she is, Abbie finds time to be on her school’s water polo team.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johann Verret of Collierville (pictured here at the announcement in the fall of achieving National Merit Semi-finalist).
In announcing Abbie’s accomplishments, Principal Sondra Morris said, “As you can tell by her many activities and successes, Abbie Verret is an extraordinarily gifted student, but one that contributes to her school and community. We are extremely proud of her and know that her future is bright. Her legacy provides a valuable witness to others.”

All-West Band Honor Clinic SBA musicians Sam Baker, Eva Band and Choirs are rated Excellent at local Festivals Blake, Austin DeVine and Langston Suggs were accepted into the All-West Honor Clinic. They performed at the Canon Center this year.
U of M Honor Orchestra Sophomore Adria Allen, junior Langston Suggs and sophomore Austin DeVine In March, the Concert Band, under the able direction of represented SBA at the U of Naomi Ziegler, attended the 2019 WTSBOA Concert M Honor Orchestra Clinic. Festival among many other Memphis area bands. They were awarded an Excellence Rating overall for their stage performance.
10 The Choral groups, under direction of equally able Tim Visual Arts I & II and drawing and painting students Vaziri, participated in the local high school choral festival, received awards for their work in the Scholastic Art and WTVMEA’s Sr. High Choral Festival, for the first time in Writing Competition at the Brooks Museum! From Ms. many years. Our choirs, along with choirs from 21 other Stoddard’s Photography classes – Owen Hensley (10) schools in the area, performed and were rated for three Honorable Mention; Kathryn Hosp (9) Silver Key and selections. The Concert Choir earned ratings of Laura Schaffler (10) Honorable Mention. From Ms. ‘Excellent’ for performance and ‘Superior’ for Sight Schaffler’s Art classes – Sarah Moran (11) Honorable Reading. The Women’s Choir earned ratings of ‘Excellent’ Mention and Chrystel Nguyen (11) Silver Key. for performance and ‘Superior’ for Sight Reading. Both choirs performed wonderfully and received plaques that will hang proudly in our Choir Room.
Both the bands and choirs competed in the Music in the Parks Festival in Dallas, Texas in late April and, as always, represented their school in excellence. SBA Music Rocks!

SBA Teacher Honored at Luncheon SBA English teacher extraordinaire Kaitlin McCumber was one of three Diocesan Catholic School teachers nominated and selected as Educator of the Week sponsored by WREG, News Channel 3. She was nominated by a student, students or families during the year and she was recognized this spring at the news station’s annual Educators of the Year luncheon. Ironically, the other two teachers have connections to SBA in addition to their respective schools.

Welcome, Coach Hudgens, as SBA AD
St. Benedict at Auburndale High School Principal Sondra Morris announced the addition of Will Hudgens (left) as the school’s new Athletic Director, taking over the reins from 10-year veteran Caleb Marcum, who left in March for a job in the corporate environment. Assisting Hudgens is Head Baseball Coach Brandon Patton, who will also serve as Assistant AD on compliance and facilities and Nick Dressman, Assistant AD for finance and marketing.
In making the announcement, Morris said, “Will has been a great addition to our staff when he came to us last spring from Houston High School. He served as football Offensive Coordinator this fall and has assumed a lot of roles, including Head Track Coach this Spring. Not only does he have a superior work ethic, he is familiar with the Memphis High School sports scene and is well-respected among his peers. We look forward to a great working relationship and with the continuation of the system and vision set in place by Coach Marcum.”
Hudgens will step out of the coaching ranks to lead the school’s Athletic Department full-time. He recently welcomed new Head Football Coach Marlon Walls, new Head Volleyball Coach Amy Hendrihovsky and new Head Girls Basketball Coach Eric Daniels.
Hudgens prepped at Ridgeway High School in Memphis and went on to play both football and baseball with the University of Memphis Tigers.
As Head Football Coach at with the Houston Mustangs prior to joining SBA, he compiled a 29-26 record and guided them to the playoffs for five years.

Marlon Walls – Football First to join was Marlon Walls as new Head Football Coach following the retirement of Coach John Cooley.
Marlon Walls is no stranger to SBA after serving three years on staff as Defensive Coordinator and assistant coach before a short time with Hernando High School last season. Coach Walls has extensive high school coaching experience serving in various roles including defensive and offensive line, tight ends, linebackers and special teams. Coach Walls was a four-year Letterman at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville and a two-year Captain and member of the Player’s Staff. Coach Walls commented, “My belief is that the game of football, at all levels, is a teaching tool and an opportunity. It is a tool to shape young boys into men, teaching them the value of loyalty, honor, pride, hard work, competition, teamwork and character. Good football players have to engage in a process of shifting their focus away from self and onto the team. I truly believe that this game allows young men to learn these qualities through experience. It is an opportunity for them not only to learn the value of these qualities, but also to build and instill them into their lives. Moreover, it gives young men the chance to form bonds and relationships that only come by being a part of a team, a part of this game. These are lessons that last a lifetime.” Principal Mrs. Sondra Morris stated, “We are extremely happy to welcome Marlon Walls to our school staff and as Head Football Coach. He will mold our boys into young men on and off the playing field.”
Amy Hendrihovsky – Volleyball It is with great excitement that we recently announced the hiring of veteran volleyball coach Amy Hendrihovsky as our new Head Coach. She takes over for Sammie Ruttan, who moved out of the city.
After spending almost twenty years coaching at the NCAA I and II levels, Coach Hendrihovsky has enjoyed the challenge of taking a group of individuals and blending the cultures and values into becoming a team that is united on reaching a common goal. The last seven years she was given the opportunity of being a Head Coach and gaining quality experience building a competitive culture, recruiting quality athletes, improving the athlete’s knowledge of the game, as well as managing and leading the day-to-day responsibilities of a women’s volleyball program at the NCAA-I level. With her knowledge, experience and confidence as a leader, she will certainly be an asset to the storied SBA volleyball program and overall athletic coaching staff.
Coach Hendrihovsky says of her experience and philosophy, “Prior to my collegiate coaching career, I completed my undergraduate degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics. My original plan was to teach and coach at the high school level. Although I chose a different path initially and thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the collegiate level, I do feel the best thing for my career and family was to move near our family in Memphis and pursue coaching at the high school level. My main purpose during my coaching tenure has been to guide incoming student-athletes into becoming confident, courageous and disciplined young women prepared for the world ahead of them. I had inspiring coaches at the high school and collegiate level that guided me through the maturation of child to adult and I believe I can continue my purpose at the high school level as well. Such beliefs have enabled me to become a positive and effective coach as well as a leader. With this opportunity at SBA, I will work hard to move our volleyball program forward and serve as a positive role model for the athletes, students and community. The quality experiences I have had the last twenty years have contributed to my development as an educator and belief in what is important in building a consistent championship level team as well. By showing care for the athletes, combined with my love and passion for the game, will foster a culture of commitment, integrity, gratefulness, learning and resiliency. We will establish a solid work ethic that spreads beyond the court into a complete intellectual and physical way of life. It’s an honor to be here and we’ve already hit the ground running with player and parents’ meetings, scheduling and summer workouts. I’m excited for the opportunity.”
22 Eric Daniels – Women’s Basketball Also, no stranger to SBA, Coach Daniels returns to SBA as Head Coach following the departure of Coach Marcum to the corporate world. Coach Daniels previously served as an assistant coach for the girls’ program.
Eric has 17 years’ experience in basketball in the Memphis area, serving as an assistant or head coach at the AAU, elementary school and high school levels. He most recently was head coach with the Shelby County System at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering. He was on staff at SBA from 2008-2015.
Coach Hudgens said of Eric, “Coach Daniels is an experienced coach and has a terrific reputation in all the coaching ranks. He has helped youth in the Memphis area reach their potential in the sport, but, more importantly, in becoming productive citizens in their communities. Eric is known for instilling a strong work ethic and will-to-win attitude. With Eric, we look forward to greatness in our girls’ basketball program.”
Eric’s daughter, Symone (SBA-2011), is one of the all-time great players to come out of SBA. She finished her basketball career for the Lady Lynx at Rhodes College.
Bowling makes it to State for their 17th appearance
The Boys and Girls Bowling Teams advanced to the State Tournament for the 17th year. The boys finished as Region Champs and State runner-up, while the girls finished as region runner-up, advancing to state playoff action.
SBA swimmers bring heavy hardware back to the Nest! Eagles soared to 4th Place overall at the 22-team Shelby County Swim Championship, and in the boys division, SBA hoisted the 5th Place trophy. School records were set by Emma Hooper in the 200-yard IM, Luc Ferro in the 200-yard IM & 100-yard breaststroke and Jacob Nichols in the 50-yard butterfly. Luc won the 100-breaststroke, while Emma and Jacob scored multiple top-5 finishes. Seniors Madison Wolfanger & Zack Ryan made the most of their final County Meet, both earning top-5 finishes.
Swim closed out the year by making history at the Tennessee State Championships. For the first time ever, SBA placed a men’s relay team into the State Finals! Jacob Nichols, Zach Ryan and a pair of freshmen, Colin Lee & Luc Ferro, swam to 14th overall in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Jacob Nichols won an individual State Medal in the 500-yard freestyle, placing 15th overall, and becomes the first male swimmer in school history to earn back-to-back individual State Medals. Senior captains Madison Wolfanger & Zach Ryan finished their careers in style. Madison broke the SBA record in the 100-yard backstroke and finished 19th overall in that event. Zach Ryan swam personal bests and was on two record-setting relays. Overall, 10 school records were broken, including: Emma Hooper in the 200 IM & 100 butterfly, Jacob Nichols in the 100 butterfly & 500 free, Luc Ferro in the 200IM & 100 breaststroke, the Men’s 200 free & 400 free relay team of Zach Ryan, Luc Ferro, Colin Lee & Jacob Nichols, and the women’s 200 medley team of Madison Wolfanger, Jennifer Farler, Emma Hooper & Bri Ayers. 23 Sports
