This report presents a state-of-the-art survey of the nondestruc- tive measuremc,nt and evaluation of residual stresses produced in metals and metal structures. The rcport is concerned primarily with residual stresses produced during the fabrication of structures made of high- strength aluminum alloys. Discussions are presented in four sections which provide the following: fundamental lnformation on residual stresses that is needed to u nd c r s t a nd ni e a s u r eme n t t e c hni ‘1 u e s review of methods of measuring residual stresses, including stress- rc,laxation tclchniquvs, X-ray diffraction technique, the ultra- sonic tcxchniclue, the hardnc,s s technique , and cracking technique s ni c’ a s u r cmcx n t of r c s id ual s t r e s s e s du ring fab r ic ati o n of m eta1 structures (mc~thodsof niecisuring residual stresses and typical experirncntal data are describcd) selection and us(’ of appropriate measurement techniques and (,valuation of results.
