September 19 September 2018 PRESS RELEASE Larissa Sansour to represent Denmark at Venice Biennale 2019 The Danish Arts Foundation has selected Danish-Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour for the Danish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2019. Larissa Sansour, 2018. Larissa Sansour was born 1973 in East Jerusalem. She received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MA in fine art from New York University. She was also a visiting student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Larissa Sansour lives and works in London. She takes an interdisciplinary approach to art, working with film, photography, installation art and sculpture in works that often take place in a science fiction universe. In recent years, Sansour has had several major solo shows internationally – most recently at Dar El- Nimr in Beirut. Her exhibition ”In the Future They Ate from the Finest Porcelain” has been shown in Liverpool, Rome, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Nottingham, Dubai, Madrid and London, while her “Nation Estate” exhibition has been shown in Rome, Jerusalem, Copenhagen, Wolverhampton, Turku and Paris. Press Release – Beirut 12/3/2018 Sci-Fi Trilogy Larissa Sansour 11 April – 6 June 2018 Opening on April 11 at 6:00 PM – Media tour at 5:30 PM Dar El-Nimer for Arts and Culture presents Sci-Fi Trilogy, an exhibition by Larissa Sansour. The exhibition brings together three of Sansour’s films – A Space Exodus (2009), Nation Estate (2012) and In the Future They Ate From the Finest Porcelain (2016). Under the common themes of loss, belonging, heritage and national identity, the films explore aspects of the social and political turmoil of the Middle East. While A Space Exodus envisions the final uprootedness of the Palestinian experience and takes the current political predicament to its extra-terrestrial extreme by landing the first Palestinian on the moon, Nation Estate reveals a sinister account of an entire population restricted to a single skyscraper. In the trilogy’s final instalment, In the Future They Ate from the Finest Porcelain, a narrative resistance leader engages in archaeological warfare in a desperate attempt to secure the future of her people. Using the language of sci-fi and glossy production, Sansour’s trilogy presents a dystopian vision of a Middle East on the brink of the apocalypse. The three films are shown alongside related installations, sculptural and photographic works. In the Future They Ate From the Finest Porcelain (2016) Sansour’s most recent film, In the Future They Ate From the Finest Porcelain, is a 29-minute science fiction short set in the cross-section between sci-fi, archaeology and politics. The film explores the role of myth for history, fact and national identity. -

Courtesy the artists New York, NY, July 9, 2013—This fall, The Studio Museum in Harlem is thrilled to present The Shadows Took Shape, a dynamic interdisciplinary exhibition exploring contemporary art through the lens of Afrofuturist aesthetics. Coined in 1994 by writer Mark Dery in his essay “Black to the Future,” the term “Afrofuturism” refers to a creative and intellectual genre that emerged as a strategy to explore science fiction, fantasy, magical realism and pan-Africanism. With roots in the avant-garde musical stylings of sonic innovator Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, 1914–1993), Afrofuturism has been used by artists, writers and theorists as a way to prophesize the future, redefine the present and reconceptualize the past. The Shadows Took Shape will be one of the few major museum exhibitions to explore the ways in which this form of creative expression has been adopted internationally and highlight the range of work made over the past twenty-five years. On view at The Studio Museum in Harlem from November 14, 2013 to March 9, 2014, the exhibition draws its title from an obscure Sun Ra poem and a posthumously released series of recordings. -

(Photo: Mohammed Assad) Gaza PCHR: In new Israeli violation, Israeli naval forces wound 2 fishermen in northern Gaza sea BEIT LAHIA 9 Apr — Israeli naval forces continue their attacks against Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Sea preventing them from sailing and fishing freely, accessing the zones rich in fish, despite the fact that fishermen posed no threat to the lives of Israeli naval forces deployed in Gaza waters … According to the investigations of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 07:50 on Thursday, 09 April 2020, Israeli gunboats stationed northwest of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza Strip chased Palestinian fishing boats sailing within the allowed fishing area (3 nautical miles) and opened fire at a fishing boat. As a result, two fishermen, Obai ‘Adel Mohamed Jarbou‘ (21) and Ahmed ‘Abed al-Fattah Ahmed al-Sharfi (23), were shot and injured with rubber-coated steel bullets. The young men, from al-Shati’ [‘Beach’] camp in Gaza City, were taken to the Indonesian Hospital, where their injuries were classified as minor. It should be noted that Israeli gunboats conduct daily chases of Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip, and open fire at them in order to terrify them and prevent them from sailing and accessing the zones rich in fish. The Palestinian and Israeli Media on Female Suicide Terrorists Avi Issacharoff Female suicide terrorists have consistently attracted abundant media attention. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Israeli and Arab (mostly Palestinian) media have peddled competing versions of reality. In a certain sense, the Israeli version of reality perpetuates the chauvinism in Arab Islamic society, and portrays the female Palestinian suicide terrorist in a relatively sympathetic light, compared with the male suicide terrorist. This narrative portrays her as weak and subject to manipulation by a chauvinist society. As such, it focuses on personal and social aspects, and ignores nationalist motives. The Arab media, on the other hand, develops the feminist dimension, portraying the Palestinian female suicide terrorist as a full partner in the national and religious jihad, while downplaying personal aspects. The Israeli media likes female suicide terrorists; it takes a greater interest in female terrorists than male terrorists. The Israeli press admires and flatters female terrorists, demonstrates excessive empathy for their deeds, and hangs on every piquant detail and gossip about these women. It describes them as women with difficult social backgrounds who come from the margins of Palestinian society and have problems at home, mostly relating to their family situation. The question arises, of course, whether they are very different from male suicide terrorists, and the answer is that they are not particularly different. Male suicide terrorists also usually come from the margins of Palestinian society, and have various personal problems that make it easier to recruit them for suicide terrorism. In the case of men, however, the media mostly comments on the revenge motive – family members of the terrorist who were killed – or his difficult economic background, hinting that the male terrorist had nothing to lose. -

A Palestinian attacked an Israeli soldier and stole her weapon. He was apprehended a short time later. A Palestinian who threw an IED at the Israeli security forces during a riot near Nablus was shot killed. Demonstrations were held in Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem: Palestinians continue holding demonstrations to protest the killing of political activist Nizar Banat. Several demonstrators were detained by the Palestinian security forces. Demonstrations were held by Fatah in support of the Palestinian Authority (PA). Despite the arrangement for a compromise reached with the residents of the Eviatar outpost and the evacuation of the site, demonstrations were held because the PA and Hamas rejected the internal Israel compromise. Palestinians demonstrated against Israel's razing of buildings constructed without authorization in Silwan in east Jerusalem. The Gaza Strip: This past week incendiary balloons were launched into Israeli territory near the Gaza Strip border, setting several fires. In response the IDF attacked terrorist targets. Rebuilding the Gaza Strip continues with efforts to find a mechanism for delivering money. In Lebanon a Hamas delegation headed by Isma'il Haniyeh met with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Saleh al-'Arouri, deputy head of Hamas' political bureau, who lives in Lebanon, was appointed to another term as responsible for Hamas activity in Judea and Samaria. -

U.S. Security Assistance to the Palestinian Authority Jim Zanotti Analyst in Middle Eastern Affairs January 8, 2010 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R40664 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress U.S. Security Assistance to the Palestinian Authority Summary Since shortly after the establishment of limited Palestinian self-rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the mid-1990s, the United States has periodically provided assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA) for civil security and counterterrorism purposes. Following the death of Yasser Arafat in late 2004 and the election of Mahmoud Abbas as his successor as PA President in early 2005, then-U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice created the office of U.S. Security Coordinator (USSC) for Israel and the Palestinian Authority to help reform, train, and equip PA security forces which had been personally beholden to Arafat and his political allies. Previous Israeli-Palestinian efforts at security cooperation collapsed during the second Palestinian intifada that took place earlier this decade. Since Hamas gained control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007, Lieutenant General Keith Dayton, head of the USSC since November 2005, and the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) have helped with the “gendarmerie-style” training of West Bank-based PA security personnel. As of June 2009, approximately 400 Presidential Guardsmen and 2,200 National Security Forces troops have been trained at the Jordan International Police Training Center (JIPTC) near Amman. All troops, new or already serving, are vetted for terrorist links, human rights violations, and/or criminal records by the State Department, Israel, Jordan, and the PA before they are admitted to U.S.-sponsored training courses at JIPTC. -

The house belonged to the family of Palestinian terrorist Islam Abu Hamid, who killed an IDF soldier in May 2018. Following the destruction Palestinians rioted and clashed with the Israeli security forces. Senior Palestinian Authority (PA) and Fatah figures rushed to announce that the PA would rebuild the house demolished by Israel. The rebuilding of terrorists' houses demolished by Israel is a pattern that repeats itself, part of the PA's consistent policy of providing benefits to terrorists and their families. The PA policy is also a way to challenge the deterrent message Israel tries to convey by demolishing the houses.
