A Study of Ws Maugham
A STUDY OF W.S. MAUGHAM HARUMA OKADA W.S.モーム研究 岡田春馬 William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris in 1874. As the family name shows, he may come from the Celtic lineage originally. From the family many great persons concerned with jurisprudence appeared from generation to generation. His grandfather was the founder of the Society of Jurisprudence, and wrote many essays. His father was also the famous lawyer, who was a counsellor of English Embassy to France, and practised in Paris. According to what Maugham writes in Summing Up, his father was a man of very singular inclination, and travelled much to Turkey, Greece and Morocco ; such places where many persons do not often visit. I feel his father's romantic vein of blood in Maugham's inclination of vagabond and adventurous spirit seeking for new experiences. He studied at the University of Heidelberg before taking up medicine in London. Since then, his travels have been frequent and extensive. He had been to India, Burma, Siam, Malaya, China, the South Seas, Russia, and the Americas, but his homes are made in London, Paris, and New York, and on the French Riviera which forms a kind of seasonable annexe to those three capitals. In my opinion, his travels nourished his writings. A cosmopolitan society supplied the background for most of his fiction and his plays, but he is as much at ease with the outpost life of British and French colonies and with remote mission stations. There must be a huge number of people whose only knowledge of missionaries is derived from the most famous story of all Maugham's short stories, Rain. -

Executive Summary William Somerset Maugham was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930’s. 2. Recommendations That the nomination for a Westminster Commemorative Green Plaque for William Somerset Maugham at his London home at 2 Wyndham Place, be approved, subject to Listed Building Consent being granted for the Plaque and for sponsorship in full . 3. Reasons for decision William Somerset Maugham was a complex and interesting character and master of the short, concise novel. The last years of the British Empire offered him magnificent canvasses on which to write his stories and plays, evoking the feelings and emotions that allow the reader to understand and identify with the characters. 4. Policy Context The commemorative Green Plaques scheme complements a number of Council strategies: to improve the legibility and understanding of Westminster’s heritage and social history; to provide information for Westminster’s visitors; to provide imaginative and accessible educational tools to raise awareness and understanding of local areas, particularly for young people; to celebrate the richness and diversity of Westminster’s former residents. -

Medway Heritage Asset Review 2017 Final Draft: November 2017 Executive Summary The Medway Heritage Asset Review intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the heritage assets in Medway in order to inform the development of a Heritage Strategy to support the emerging Medway Local Plan 2015. Medway benefits from a rich heritage spanning millennia, underpinning the local distinctiveness and creating a unique and special character that can be readily interpreted through the historic environment. The main report is broken down into sections, initially looking at the topography of Medway and how this influenced human settlement in the area, then looking at the development of the key settlements in Medway; taking into consideration the key drivers for their establishment and identifying existing heritage assets. Furthermore, the main influences to development in the area are also considered; including Chatham Dockyard and the military, the brick, cement and lime industry, agriculture, maritime and religion. Through investigating Medway’s history both geographically and thematically, the significance of heritage assets and the importance of historic landscapes can be readily identified; enabling a better understanding and providing opportunities to enhance their enjoyment. Non-designated heritage assets are also identified using a broad range of sources; providing a deeper knowledge of what shapes the distinct local character experienced in Medway and the how this identity is of great importance to the local community. The report concludes with suggestions for additional areas of research and identifies themes to be considered to inform the development of a coherent and robust Heritage Strategy that will help enhance, understand and celebrate Medway’s heritage for years to come. -

PRESS RELEASE 29 July 2009 SAVE ATTACKS COUNCIL OVER PLANS TO DESTROY EDWARDIAN LANDMARK SAVE Britain’s Heritage is calling for Medway Council to abandon plans to destroy a landmark Edwardian commercial building occupying a commanding position on the riverside at Strood in north Kent. The unlisted Aveling and Porter building is one of only a handful of buildings of architectural and historic significance in Strood. It dates c.1906 and was designed by local architect George Bond as the headquarters of Aveling and Porter, manufacturers of agricultural engines. The firm built its first steam engine in 1861 and went on to become the world’s leading producer of steam rollers. The firm’s handsome office building has stood as a prominent landmark on Strood riverside for over 100 years. Now, the owners, Medway Council, want to see this fine, solid and well-maintained Edwardian building destroyed to facilitate the sale of the wider site to developers. Although currently empty, the building is in good condition and remarkably intact (all the original windows survive for example). Clearly, it is eminently capable of conversion for a number of new uses. Its waterside location, with views across the Medway to Rochester is a major attraction. The campaign to save the A&P building has been led by the City of Rochester Society which, on Thursday 30 July, will present a 1000-name petition to councillors. The petition calls for a proper study of potential new uses for the existing building. Suggested options for conversion include a boutique hotel and a new home for the nearby Medway Archive. -
Bus Service Improvement Plan (Bsip) 2021-2026
<DRAFT> BUS SERVICE IMPROVEMENT PLAN (BSIP) 2021-2026 SECTION 1 – OVERVIEW 1.1 Context and BSIP extent 1.1.1 This Bus Service Improvement Plan covers the whole of the Medway Council area, for which there will be a single Enhanced Partnership. Fig 1- Location of Medway 1.1.2 It is not intended to cover services which are excluded from the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme, even where these may be registered as local bus services in the Medway area. 1.1.3 We are working collaboratively with our colleagues at Kent County Council, who are producing a BSIP for their own area. However, our plans remain separate for a number of reasons: 1. Only a handful of routes offer inter-urban cross-boundary travel. 2. Although the Medway/Kent boundary cuts through the Lordswood and Walderslade areas, with one exception, services crossing this boundary in the contiguous urban area are effectively short extensions of Medway-focussed routes. 3. Medway is primarily an urban area with a small rural hinterland; Kent is a large rural county with a plethora of widely dispersed urban settlements. 4. Medway's socio-economic make up is considerably different to that of Kent as a whole. It is a lower wage economy, while more than 35% of jobs are in lower skilled categories, compared to under 30% in Kent, and even fewer in the wider south east (source: ONS annual population survey via nomisweb.co.uk). Indices of Multiple Deprivation are much poorer in Medway than in Kent (see appendix 1). 5. As a unitary authority, Medway Council has certain powers that are not available to Kent County Council.
